Although I don't think this is the best product for a new player, I think it might still be worth picking up if you want some strong legendary creatures for archetypal GW and UR strategies, a few other good cards, and lovely basic lands in a cheap, convenient package.

Yeah Starter Kit 2023 still seems better for a new player than this. Maybe they should have used Foundations instead of Blumborrow for this year's starter kit.
@Triceratopping3 ай бұрын
100%, it seems very odd to have a product like Foundations that is specifically designed to be an easy point of access for new players and then not do a starter kit based on it. However it sounds like the Foundation products might have a kind of Jumpstart aspect to them where you mash up two mini-decks?
@Reluxthelegend3 ай бұрын
@@Triceratopping Considering we only get 1 non-UB starter kit per year i think set specific starter kits is a mistake. They should offer a more varied view of magic because it seems weird to try to get people in with a specific plane that we are only going to stay for a single set.

Novice player returning after a long absence and learning with a young player with no experience. We are having fun with this kit. It can be difficult at times with counters, tokens, and layered abilities but it also feels like we are growing into it. I understand and agree with the critique. These decks provide a good foundation to add some key card elements and create the synergy Magic is so good at. Overall a good value.

It is a little sad the reprints couldn’t get new art with animals to fit the setting. And I agree some of the card complexity seems pretty high for a starter kit. On a side note, I recently found your channel and have been loving the precon/starter/duel deck reviews! Brings back lots of nostalgia from when I first got into magic, and it’s fun to think through the design choices and play patterns in these decks that I usually wouldn’t pay as much attention to these days

This starter kit is kinda the best showcase of complexity creep in Magic. So many cards with 3 abilities and am pretty sure the majority of cards have at least 2. And plenty of abilities are pretty esoteric. I am fearing the next starter kit if they continue in this direction.

It's the prowess and copies that get me, those are two things that can get quite difficult to track over the course of a Magic game. Expecting new players to get it right the first time is just wack

i completely agree on the bloomburrow reprint with no updated art. Bloomburrow is all about the little creatures and it doesn’t make any sense to have something like a soldier angel in there. In other sets like lotr they updated all included cards which felt very good

I'm a fan of Chandra, and even have a Chandra themed commander deck, but seeing her on Flame Lash, and Jiang Yanggu on Giant Growth is just jarring next to all of the animals. Flame Lash could have been swapped out for Conduct Electricity, and Giant Growth for High Stride. Pawpatch Recruit would have been a better rare than Colossification, and Valley Floodcaller would have been a great addition instead of Mind Spring. The lack of cohesive art spoils what could have otherwise been a great product.

Great video I've been getting back into MTG with my brother we've been playing an ajani and chandra core set precon decks from 2018-19 I think modified with stuff from that block for the last year haha, just keep forgetting to go and pick something up. been yeah we play standard exclusively, my i'm just wondering What would you recommend as a returning player: this or AC starter and a bundle just for pickup and play value at this point. my career has changed and I wanna start going to game nights again as a treat for the end of the work week, so in terms of building a decent deck I'll probably splash out on individual cards etc. anyway thanks! And great video bro
@TriceratoppingАй бұрын
I like the AC starter a lot more than this one personally, but there's something to be said for getting a random bundle of cards off ebay and just building some jank. You could also take a look at my Get Decked videos for some budget deckbuilding ideas to get back into the game 😉 Glad you liked the video!

So I finally got around to doing a review of these myself and it wasn’t really worth the wait. I do appreciate that each deck is largely two or three ofs, and I don’t mind having the reprints but these could have been selected better and/or had new art. Or even used other art: the 5th Edition Giant Growth from DiTerlizzi for instance. Or Lightning Blast over Flame Lash for the better flavour. If it was important to have a 4 mana 4 damage direct damage spell in the deck. The biggest problem with these, I think, is that they choose the wrong colour combinations. Imagine how interesting Bats vs Frogs could have been, for instance. Or more realistically if they’d gone for the classic starter deck strategy with Birds vs Racoons. That may have been a little less interesting but without a doubt better for newbies. If you’re not in colours that rely on token or spell matters effects then it’d be easier to put something a bit simplier together. Ultimately I’m not sure who these decks are for. You’re right that they’re not the best for new players: I’d be pointing people towards the 2023, LoTR or Assassin kits. With the reprints they’re not great for the flavour gang. Then more experienced players, at least within the LGS type scene, have the Commander decks. (I played with Mrs Bumbleflower in a pod with the new Squirrel precon on the weekend and that deck really sang)

Hey Mate, i bought this set to teach my girlfriend magic, she choosed the green/white rabbit deck, and i played the otters. She plays well now, and knows how her deck works, but the otters perform overall way better, just because the single rare cards are sooo OP compared to tokens/ tmep +1/+1... In about ten to fifteen matches i won like 70% with otters

I was about to pull the trigger on these for my son but now am reconsidering based on your video. He recently joined an MTG club at school and wants a deck of his own. Sounds like he and the other beginners have been using Planeswalker decks mostly. I want to get him a deck that is of comparable power level so he isn't getting trounced or trouncing the rest of the beginners using Planeswalker decks. Could you recommend a starter kit for him? I have no MTG experience whatsoever.
@Triceratopping8 күн бұрын
The Assassin's Creed one is genuinely very good, imo (especially if he likes the AC games). There's also the 2023 and LotR Starter Kits which are pretty good too if you can track them down; I've also done reviews for those! Also, consider checking out the upcoming Foundations set, especially the Starter Collection box!

I feel like a simpler deck to learn compared to UR spellslinger would be BR lizard deck that incentivizes your opponent losing life. BR aggro is always a nice entry point for beginners.

I don't really know why they keep doing RU spells decks in precons. They can't even figure out mono red prowess as we saw in Chandra's PW deck.
@Triceratopping3 ай бұрын
I think it's fine to do UR spellslinger for an intro deck, the elements of bounce, burn, and creatures with spell synergies are all pretty straightforward. It just needs a bit more thought in how it's put together.

Pretty complex Decks to be starter decks. If you admit a suggestion for a video, maybe you can do 2 starter decks with Bloomborrow with less complexity for begginers in the vein of the old Core sets with less rares and mostly commons and uncommons. I think they Will be cheaper than the price of the intro decks also

Great vid! i agree with all your points! pretty confusing decks for new players, and very all over the place for players who know how to play. i think personally they should've gone with rats vs raccoons which have VERY simple bloomburrow mechanics that are easy to track (threshold and expend), the face cards would have to be new ones (Vren is OP) and it overlaps a bit with there being a RG raccon commander deck, but i think it would work. People who are starting to play can barely grasp mana costs and combat... slapping cards that each have 2-3 effects + some keywords makes it really difficult to learn the game (going by my experience of trying to teach my bf) I think starter kit decks should revolve around cards that are extremely simple and have one or two effects, but letting the player find synergies and play patterns across them (ex.: a "draw cards equal to the highest power among creatures you control" sorcery and a pump instant)
@Triceratopping3 ай бұрын
Rats vs Racoons would've been a good alternative. I also think Lizards would've been good as they seem to have pretty simple effects. Keep an eye out for my Bloomburrow deck videos!

I know this might sound a bit daft. But I've ordered two starter sets, one for introducing and playing with newcomers and one to strip for parts. I just really want to make a blue red otter deck and here I've got a rare and a mythic that I don't have to get elsewhere. I guess singles will be plenty cheap, but this way I have them from day 1 and can start testing it out and brewing. Maybe I'll upgrade the starter deck I use with beginners with more fitting cards.

I have to be honest I quite like the starter decks and this one is particularly good, but it is a bit much for new players, I guess in most cases that it will more likely be a experienced player playing against someone new as an introduction to the game but there's a lot to unpack for someone new. It's a great buy though, some decent cards for next to nothing. Bloomburrow is looking really good and the Commander precons are nice too.
