I was gonna quote him myself but I see there's no need. I'll add though "you just reload and thank Jesus you have an '06 that goes through them 6-7-8 deep." And as far as the garand thumb issue, I think it's also overstated. Might be more of an issue in the stress of combat but I've never had that issue in a range setting, even with cold, numb hands. The bolt closes when you release pressure on the fresh clip, not when you push it down. If anything, sometimes the bolt doesn't close and you need to give the charging handle a good smack to close the bolt.

Ping aside that is bulls++it, the Lee Enfield is a better rifle: It has a stronger action, lighter, more reliable, easier to clean and maintain, accepts longer (non standard) bullets, it doesn't waste ammo with spray and pray mode (questionable but a US Army study concluded that in war an average of 2% of the bullets reach the target so the answer is not spray more but cool off and take better aim), more ammo in the magazine.

@@banmadabon AH yes we should all still be using bolt action rifles, right? Britain must be pretty stupid too since they did the same thing the US did and adopted the FAL right after WW2... Because "spray and pray," right? You're salty a different country had a better rifle than yours... They both weighed the same. Stronger action based on what? The Garand has never had issues with the chamber blowing up LOL. People throw that around and don't even know what it means. More reliable? It's entire action is exposed to the ingress of mud and filth and is easy to jam... Not to mention the Enfield used rimmed cartridges that were prone to rimlock, impropper loading, and more jamming in the presence of mud. Accepts longer rounds? That's a negative, not a positive, it introduces more reliability problems due to a longer action. This is why the 7.62x51 NATO was developed, to shorten the catridge. Comparing a bolt action rifle to a modern semi-auto is borderline stupidity. Of course the Garand was better, no one has ever argued otherwise, except your dumbass.

They have many things in common, such as a detachable ten round magazine, and the action is very similar. But the Gewehr 43 was NOT the first German self-loading rifle of WW2. This title goes to the Gewehr 41. It was developed before 1940, long before they faced the SVT-40 or even the M1 Garand. The G41 has no detachable magazine, but it had a higher quality than the G43, and it was very reliable. Very few of these weapons were made, and they are very rare. MacArthur once called it "The greatest battlefield implementation ever devised" We can all see why: It's practical, extremely accurate, even at long range, easy to mass-produce, and it makes the iconic "ping" when it runs dry. The ping might prove to be a disadvantage in most cases, but it's like music to your ears when you hear it for the first time.

I'm Korean, and I heard story by my father, that my grandfather used this gun at Korean war. He said, When grandfather firstly got this gun, he said 'Wow, I didn't know there were such wonderful guns in the world. It is much better than old crude japanese gun. It's amazing this gun can reload once and fire multiple times without pulling the bolt every time. But, it's little big and heavy for asian.' All Korean soilders could armed with excellent guns - M-1 garand and M-1 carbine at the war thanks to US goverment's supply. I used K-2 automatic rifle when I served in military last year, and I know that the huge developments between M-1 and my K2C1 rifle are all thanks to the veterans who used M-1 rifle at the Korean War. We remember there was many foreign sacrifice and help for saving freedom and democracy of small, poor newly indepedent country. We grandly honor all ROK, US and UN veteran's service, we stand in awe of their sacrifice and bravery at Korean War. I can't sure my english grammer is perfect, but I hope my meaning has been conveyed to you. thanks.

True, but Garand didn't want to have completely redesign the entire rifle which is why it only hold 8 rds. There were other types of rifles competing for the contract, the other one close was the M1 Johnson (nicknamed the pregnant rifle). Hard to find today but it was produce in a limited quantity.

I learned about this gun when I played my first CoD game on ps 2 - CoD 2: Big Red One. Btw, I still have a disk with that game, it's like about 17-18 years old and almost in perfect condition. My second favorite rifle from that game is Gewehr 43.

Correction - The M1 Garand was not exclusively used for the entirety of WWII. My father was in the first group to wade ashore at Guadalcanal and he and all other US Marines were carrying M1903's. The didn't get Garands until early in 1943.

I love how video game developers looked at this gun and thought "This is too OP, make it to less damage than any bolt action so it takes multiple shots to kill"

I love my M1 Garand more than any other weapon I own, and probably always will. But I'm not so sure it was the only semi-auto weapon fielded by a major army in WW2. The Soviets had the SVT-40, which was designed roughly the same time and fired 10 rounds of 7.62 x 54R (the same cartridge used by the legendary Mosin_Nagant), and it was apparently an adored weapon, but the thing apparently took a much longer time to produce when Papa Stalin could make 3-4 Mosins in the same amount of time. Even so, love my M1!

The best rifle the U.S Military had but it also replaced the US M1917 Enfield which was the American version of the Lee-Enfield but the Soviets had the SVT-40 rifle in 1940 or the German Gewehr 43 rifle in 1943 they were also semi automatic rifles but don't have a ping sound.
