If you are new to our videos, YES, this one might strike you as a bit silly; however, if you have any interest in firearms, firearms history, and firearms safety, check out some of our other videos; you might learn something more useful than how to load an M1 Garand. Welcome aboard! :-) Granted, as has been pointed out, if you get your thumb out of there quickly, you can load successfully without losing your thumb. The main reason this technique I'm showing is taught (And I use it always) is that it saves your thumb whenever you are messing with your M1 Garand, whether you are not getting the bolt back all the way, unloading the rifle, just checking the action, loading a partially loaded clip, etc. Probably most commonly, one gets his or her thumb caught when just working the bolt on an empty chamber, due to not getting the bolt back into the lock position. The Garand is wonderful, but the action and loading system is a bit odd, which results in a better chance of getting "Garand Thumb" in some way when trying to get the gun locked back, loaded, or whatever. I never pull the bolt back unless I have my hand against that operating rod; others can proceed however they prefer. :-) Don't forget to visit the Hickok45 store: www.hickok45.com/store/

@@amadeus5182 uh, it's unlikely. The Garand's bolt goes foward with a high speed and a high force, so if you leave the thumb there, get ready to feel a great pain. Or you can get tolerance if you get used to getting your thumb pressed against the receiver by the bolt (But in BFV it would be way too weird).

During my military service (mandatory in Brazil when turning 18 years old) we used a somewhat similar rifle model (it had a manual reloading bolt), it was the Mauser rifle, based on the 08/34 but with a .30-06 Springfield caliber. Reloading, aiming and shooting (obviously having the reload working with the bolt) was exactly like that. A weapon for hunters par excellence, a delight ! watch?v=xjrosNt96us

There is a way to put the bolt and cartridge follower installed in reverse order so when your buddy executes inspection arms the cartridge follower pops out of the rifle flying through the air when he draws the bolt to the rear, always got a good laugh on that one .. thanks for the walk down memory lane pal ...

@imrelentless95773 жыл бұрын
Question what causes the ping? When the clip falls on the ground? Or what?
@thetaintedbear45573 жыл бұрын
@@imrelentless9577 It's the forceful ejection of the clip. Normally the clip is inside of the magazine, but for the m1 garand the magazine is built into the gun itself, so the clip is inserted separately and thus must be removed from the gun before the next clip of ammunition can be loaded. Can you imagine trying to dig the clip out of the gun every time you run out of ammunition? That's why it forcefully ejects. Faster reloading, no jamming, and less room for error. Shame that such a loud ejection is just free advertisement to your enemy that you need to reload.

When I was in JROTC we had decommissioned M1 Garands with a lead stop blocking the barrel. Most people got Garand thumv from.messing with empty gun or it being incredibly worn and clean and with worn out clips(modern ww2 examples after heavy use) If it isnt well worn and on top of that is dirty then its incredibly unlikely to close on ones thumb. It will almost always require a little nudge to slide forward just like later in the video
