M1 vs M2 Max - Worth the Upgrade??

I have an M1 mba too and thinking about upgrading (initially wanted m1 max but waited until m2 max which is not satisfying considering te two year's wait) thanks!

What about the thermals? Luke Miani says that the M2 runs REALLY hot!

Good question!! It definitely runs hotter than the M1. However I edited this video on it and never heard the fan kick on. So yes it runs hotter, but seemingly only when doing heavy lifting, and it doesn’t seem to be a problem. Thanks for joining me over here!!

@@ColtCapperruneTech According to Luke Miani's video, for some reason, Apple chose to let it run hot without the fan kicking in. Hope this does not affect the longevity of the computer. It would be nice to have the choice to enable the fan so that it would run cooler. He was testing the M2 Max. Video: "An Actually USEFUL M2 Max video (it gets really HOT)"

It definitely runs hotter than the M1. But it’s not hotter than other laptops I’ve had in the past. I think we got spoiled with the M1 machines never even getting hot to the touch.

The M2 max definitely runs hotter than the M1. But even during heavy, lifting, I have never heard the fan on either of them.

Anyone try to run the M2 with Pro Tools? I have yet to see any compatibility reports!

ProTools is running here just fine, and ProTools is already updated for support with Ventura. Hope that helps!

Nah...I considered it briefly when you bought the Mac Studio to follow suit. But then I remembered that I can build a recording PC for a LOT less and afford some rack hardware too. I built a PC for less than $900 with a 12 core i7, 32gb of ram, and 1tb NVMe and 1tb ssd... I haven't tried to max out the computer. I have had projects with 200 tracks and effects galore and have never seen the cpu load go above 40%. I'm happy, and I also was able to purchase a couple preamps and an analog dual valve stereo parametric EQ and a patch bay and a new Focusrite 8i6 (which I am already planning to upgrade to an 18i20).

If you are into building computers, go for it! I’m so heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. Especially final cut pro.

this is ok for PC units, but laptop wise I've tested so much and unfortunately apple is beating pc by a margin

@Colt Capperrune Tech yep been building my own for years now. Unfortunately Apple can't come even close to the cost savings I get with a PC. While a new M2 or maybe even an M1 might outperform my PC, there is no way to justify the huge gap in price vs value!!! Now having said that, because this is a recording PC, I didn't get a graphics card because the built in graphics in the i7 are fine for mixing. The Apple stuff also rivals PC's with fairly expensive video cards in them with their displays...so you get a lot more than just a recording PC. As Colt pointed out, these things render video at rediculous speeds. I can't justify the expense because I don't do videos enough to experience value from that. So I'm not saying PC is the best, far from it. For the PRICE, PC made the most sense for me, that's it!

@@pvalenti I agree with you completely, it's about knowing what one needs and doesn't need. Someone who is only tracking and mixing has different requirements from someone producing with vst's etc.

A bit confusing in the beginning Colt .... M1 vs M1 Max or M2 Max ? But we get it later. The question is that if it is satisfying to have a lot of free CPU power left, does it really makes a problem if you can still run such a session with 30% of CPU power left with M1 ? I would love to run that test! My thought behind this comparison, is that so many of us bought the M1 chipped machines when they first came out, I wanted to show that it was in fact worth the upgrade. Thanks for watching!

No. It is an useful test for some of us because I need to see if it's worth the upgrade. I am not choosing between the two.
