The geekbench numbers for the M2 put it close to Intel's HEDT platform from 2017. I know that doesn't mean that it's as fast and performant as those processors... but it's really crazy to think that a chip designed to be in a massive workstation tower is in the same ballpark as tablet SOC 5 years in the future. It's also hard to believe because of how badly iPadOS (and the apps on it) holds back the M2.

A big thing for me is the sheer pleasure of using the device. The iPad Pro is just a lot more pleasurable to use with its touch interface, connecting you direct to whatever you are doing rather than through a touchpad or mouse. Plus the flexibility of the device to use as tablet when not working. Tech reviewers love to say that the iPad software is dumbed down, but for what most people do it every day use, that simpler software is an advantage to get what you want done without extra complications. I have used an iPad Pro, as my main device for the last five years, running an international business, plus photo and video editing, and playing music, and watching video and web browsing. It just provides everything I need.

I need to ask you if you ever need to search for stuff in the files? I do purchase ordering and can't use my iPad for it. If I open up the finder to search for a part I ordered in a purchase order, it can't find it. It just finds the words of the title of the order itself. It can't find a part in the actual order that I make (PDF's). This is there one reason, I think the iPad in not "Pro" They need to add this support.

The ipad is still primarily a media consumption device. Reading articles, taking notes and drawing works really well. But I've yet to see anyone use an ipad pro as their primary work machine.

Like every year, the answer to the question on whether iPads can replace MacBooks is… it depends, and really it doesn’t matter. Some people can and some people can’t. But that isn’t a bad thing because you should buy the tool that works best for you. If you reverse the question and ask whether a MacBook can be an iPad replacement, I’d say the answer is also maybe. Buy what you like.

Pretty good, something you could add is using them in a dock like setup. Setting both up with an external monitor, mouse, keyboard & dock. I imagine using an iPad Pro like a laptop connected to its dock(for using numbers, pages, working) with a mouse & keyboard then disconnecting it for media consumption(KZbin, social media, games etc.) when you leave your desk. I think the external monitor support & functionality on the iPad would be important in this use case. Although I think right now you might need 16.2 beta. If you find this idea interesting enough you could do it when 16.2 goes public or whatever version ends up with monitor support & stage manager. 👍

Thank you for a great comparison. I love the easy use of some of the iPad apps (LumaFusion for example) and the handholding for reading. But more and more I am getting sick of the shortcomings on the iPad. I agree with you that some of those shortcomings like the disastrous files app must be intentional as they would be easy to fix. I own the last gen MacBook Air and it was already good. The new one looks like the perfect end of a long evolution. There is not a lot of room to improve. It may be time to leave the iPad behind 😢

I have both. The iPad is essential to me for media consumption and drawing (procreate), and most of my email and internet activity. The Mac does database and web development, and some of my writing (I’m a writer). So, both make it work for me, each doing what it does better than the other. Sent from my iPad!

Agreed! Both devices have their own distinct uses. As a teacher, the iPad is great for lessons- I use it instead of writing on a white board. It also helps me model what I want students to do on their own devices. The computer helps me with word processing (forms and plans), using spreadsheets, video conferencing, and other web-based programs. Pretty much everything else the iPad isn’t used for. For many people, buying both products can’t be justified and I will always suggest buying a computer over a tablet simply because of the current incapabilities in iPad OS.

Hey Max & team, thank you for your hard work! I love your in depth videos, but this video lacked some valid points in my opinion. For example you didn’t mention that the letterboxed area of the screen of the iPad Pro is much smaller when watching videos because of the aspect ratio. Your standard 16:9 video just looks much wider on the MacBook Air and I much prefer that, despite the inferior display quality. Secondly you didn’t talk about the big plus for the iPad that one can buy a 5G version, which you you obviously don’t get on the MacBook Air. Keep up your good quality! All the best, take care.

Very helpful and practical comparison. Artist here. I need my laptop replacement to be able to sketch. The iPad Pro is great for that but does not run the main digital painting app. I use (Rebelle). Would love to be able to have my Mac Mini as my desktop and iPad Pro as my laptop/tablet without having a Macbook which is not sketch capable but works great with pen tablet and pen display. I still have the iPad Pro 4th Gen and will not be getting the M2 iPad Pro (maybe the M3). Main deal breaker-the portrait front camera is barely useable for zoom etc. due to being annoying for someone to not look at you hardly at all while talking. Also, the file manager is OK but also annoying as stated in the video. So, the iPad Pro not there yet for laptop replacement for me.

I waffled back and forth when getting my M1 iPad 13” as to whether a MacBook Air or iPad would be better. I decided that, for me, the iPad with the Logitech Combo Touch would be more flexible. I’m able to do most everything that I need on it. However, when I find that I need more power or desktop-level apps, I can use Splashtop to connect to my Mac Mini (from wherever I’m at) and use those higher-level apps. It has worked well over this past year, giving me the best of both worlds.

I think you might want to consider the MacBook Pro 14” instead. Just buy the iPad 9th Gen for cheap if you want an iPad. It does everything the iPad Pro does, just doesn’t have the M2 processor in it and some fancy features.

I guess I'm looking forward, and noticing that iPad Pros could be the next "all-in-one" device. The flexibility that they provide is insane. I have a laptop, but wanted a tablet size form factor. So the iPad Pro 11" M2 wound up being the device I purchased. But if I'm the future, they release an iPad Mini Pro, I will definitely buy that one when released. For the time being, the iPad Pro 11" M2 will be absolutely sufficient for my personal needs.

To be fair, as far as authentication goes, The Apple Watch can also serve as a way to authenticate you on the Mac and have you log in automatically, so in that respect it is faster than FaceID (since you have to swipe up on the iPad to login)

Max, I tip my hat for your storage speed test. This is incredibly useful for us that have to take a machine on the go, I use my M1 Air mostly as a backup machine when traveling. Keep these tests please. And thank you for spending your time doing this. (It is a shame Apple is crippling the Thunderbolt port on the iPad, that thing would be wonderful as a off-the-beaten-path backup solution). Cheers.

The problem with iPadOS for me, is the browsers. I work on developing/administering business platforms (SharePoint Online, Dynamics and Salesforce) and I can't do it using the browsers on the iPad, even when requesting the Desktop Sites. I need MacOS in order to use a device for work.

Unless you need the Apple Pencil, comparing 512GB models, to get the iPad Pro 12.9 with Magic Keyboard you’re gonna spend nearly the same for the significantly more powerful and functional base 14” MacBook Pro with current deals. Both are miniLED 120Hz displays, but the 14” MBP gets you bigger display, much more connectivity, better speakers, and full featured OS. I have the M1 12.9 iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and the M1 MacBook Air, and I basically only use the iPad for watching videos/movies.

Thank you for the comparison but each point is debatable based on the use each person makes of each model. For me, I use mail, web and MS office and IOS office does not run VBA files ( files with macros ) and opening and closing a file is an import and export procedure and you lose a lot of functions in your files during this process. Therefore I just ordered a well equipped MacBook Air. If the IPad Pro would of operated the MS office files similarly to MacOS, then for sure I would of taken an IPad Pro. I’m sure it’s a question of time where IPad will operate like a Mac but we’re just not there yet.

I think the question shouldn’t be can the iPad be a laptop but are laptops still necessary because the iPad can do what most people use a laptop for anyway which is videos web browsing and light gaming and it is a lot easier for those who have difficulty using a computer and I think the reason a lot of people don’t like the iPad is they try to make it a laptop instead of a really really good tablet which is what it is

I say despite its shortcomings, I think the M2 IPad Pro would be a great pick for me. I orginally wanted a new tablet to replace my Samsung Tab S5e for media consumption and mobile gaming. However, I started learning on how effective the Apple Desktop chips can do for productivity such as photo/video editing. I normal do all my editing on one of my window desktops PCs, however I am not a expert at the software so it takes a while for me. Having the power of the M2 chip on a tablet size form is honestly amazing for me because I can edit content on the go and can still be much faster than a regular windows desktop. Sure the editing software on Ipad is not the full coverage of the desktop counterparts, but for simple editing for videos in YT or Tiktok, it can really make things easier for me to produce them. Overall, I am picking up the M2 IPad Pro for my tablet replacement but also being a powerful All in One device.

Another thing I don’t like about the ipad is the camera for zoom purposes because it’s on the side and low so I have to find a way to add lift to the ipad plus have to position myself in the middle of the camera rather than the screen but i see no reviews about that

Apple never wants iPad Pro as Macbook equivalent even if they have similar chips. You know it is marketing concerns. Apple wants you to buy Macbook too so they limit iPad software between an iphone and Macbook.

Yup, my 2022 12.9 M2 is amazing. Love watching movies with the display/ speakers! Also having cellular is a plus.

Apple simply wants you to have to purchase both devices. There is no reason to cripple the Ipad transfer speeds or prevent it from using Mac OS. It's why some people, including me, purchase Surface Pro's instead. The Apple Ipad hardware is a little better, but it is crippled by the OS.

Exactly! I am going Surface Pro next go around. It ends up being cheaper than if you were to buy an ipad pro and macbook air. Especially when the Surface Pro goes on sale.

For me personally im in a weird position where i prefer to work on a pc but prefer the apple eco system. i do engineering for work but i draw for fun. i might just go with the ipad and hope it gets better since it has a lot of potential software wise. An iPad could become a Macbook replacement one day but a Macbook could never replace an iPad.

While the iPad has vastly improved in utility over the years, and can be configured the same as a basic work laptop, it's still not a great laptop if typing is your primary input. The Pencil is the reason for the iPad, for content creators. The iPad excels as a drawing tablet. Pro/Con: iOS has its own ecosystem of apps, many of which are not on MacOS, and are essentially built around touch/draw interface. With M chip iPads, there doesn't seem to be any reason not to be able to run MacOS/apps, but it is what it is. Two different tools for different sets of use cases, with a fair amount of overlap in-between. If you can only buy/carry one, the question is: "Do you mostly type, or do you mostly draw?"

I bought the M1 MacBook Air out of necessity for the very few things it does that my iPad Pro cannot and not because I like using the Macbook. I wish I could get rid of it. What’s frustrating is that the iPads limitations are 100% software and could all be remedied with a software update.

Short answer for me, no. Because it doesn't have Logic, MainStage or 3rd party plugin support so for me in the "pro" music world, doesn't apply. It might be great for other kind of pros but not us in the music world.

I’m looking at the (rumoured at this date) 2024 12.9”iPad Air vs the 2022 12.9” iPad Pro. Both have the M2 but the Pro will have ProMotion. I’m concerned about the FaceTime camera on the 2022 Pro. But can you compare the two and suggest what might be best? Mostly web surfing (6-8 tabs), media consumption, photo editing but not pro level.

There is a part of me that thinks that adding MacOS to the iPad would totally drain the battery. I do think this could potentially one reason that this hasn’t happened in addition to Apple not wanting iPads to cannibalize MacBooks. I could be totally off with this assessment, but believe there may be some merit to this reasoning.

Hardware-wise, huge compromises have been made to the iPads aside from the battery in order to keep the size and weight down. They really are two very different animals despite sharing some important hardware. Kind of like how you can find a Honda Civic engine in an Ariel Atom. Well... is it fast.. yes. But compromises have been made as well - hope you like no effective windscreen, heater, roof...

It's kind of sad that apple doesen't make convertibles like other brands. The macbook would be perfect if it could be bought with at least a toch screen. The problem is that you either get an ipad, which is amazing for note taking and some more casual tasks or an macbook, which is great at more professional oriented tasks like video editing, but lacks any useful functionality as anything more than a boring laptop. Editing videos, photos etc on an ipad is possible, but the apps are significantly more limited and not for professional use, compared to their PC / mac counterparts.

I got a iPad Pro awhile back and it is the most disappointing of all my Apple purchases. It was to be my device for my practice area for music and it ended up mainly just being used for Zoom and some music app's. iPadOS was on of the major PIA and big reason I would go back to my iMac for everything else. So I bought a Macbook Air M2 a lot so I could trying a M-series SoC and I instantly found myself using the MBA M2 all the time way more than my iPad Pro. I can do more with the MBA for recording music, making videos, basic office type work, and even just watching video and listening to music. With iPad I would try to set in a gaming chair and watch music tutorial video or do ear training apps and the iPad even in the keyboard folder was a pain to stay in a usable position. Using the MBA M2 it just sits there in place and easy to move screen to any angle I want. As for sound from the device I would say they are about the same except I disagree with you I find the stereo separation even better on the MBA M2. Since I'm a musician if I really want to do serious listening to music with my MBA M2 I use headphones. Also with the MBA M2 I can run full version of Ableton Live and do recording in my practice area or remotely, nore of the full DAWs run on iPad. So I am extremely happy with my MBA M2 I mainly bought it because I needed something small and wanting to tryout a M-series chip. I find myself using the MBA M2 all time and even using it for some things I was doing on my iMac because of its handy size. So no more iPad's for me. If Apple does make a OSX for iPad that will make a big difference, but for me I'm going to stick with MacBook's instead.

I also do music and MuseScore, Acrobat Pro, and many other things simply work properly on MacOS, as they always have. Not odd kludges, work-arounds, and hoping things convert - just open and go as designed. Also, many people forget that Adobe got its start on Mac and its products still work best on MacOS. PAying good money for 3/4 of the program is not my first choice, but that's what the app store usually gets you.

Just so you know, since the 2022 Adobe Max, Lightroom CC on Mac and Windows gained GPU Acceleration for exports but the iPad didn't (it did not even get anything new in Photoshop and LR still lacks many features from the Desktop version without any reason, Adobe is restricting the iPad voluntary...). From what we saw before this new version of LR, the iPad Pro M1 was faster than the Macbook Airs and Pros M1 on exports meaning that when Adobe FINALLY upgrades the Mobile version for iPad, exporting files will likely become faster on the tablet than it is on the Laptops.

Also, there are many ways to increase an iPad's battery life, unlike MacBooks. An iPad, like an iPhone, has many customizable features that can increase its battery consumption, knowing how to use an iPad, again, like an iPhone, can dramatically change your usage of it. Oh and please stop telling people to buy a fast charge brick, it is destroying the battery! Learn how to charge your devices and only use fast charge when you need it..
