Some quick game testing on the new Mac Studio with M2 Ultra, 24 CPU cores, 64 GB RAM, 60 GPU cores. At the time of recording this is the fastest Mac you can buy, the 76 GPU core variant will be delivered to the public in July 2023. In this video I'll be testing Mac games including games running through Rosetta, native ARM, OpenGL, MoltenVK, Metal, as well as Windows games running through Game Porting Toolkit and also Nintendo Switch games running through Ryujinx.

The random perf drops on the Ultra vs Max could be a similar cache coherency issue like we saw with early Ryzen architecture when they went the multi-tile CPU approach with Threadripper. Gen 1 Threadripper performed better in games when you disabled the other tiles to avoid the penalty of memory access across the fabric interconnect, but you lost access to all the other cores on the other tiles. I think it was mitigated by changing the Windows scheduling behavior to avoid moving threads across core complexes, so maybe Apple could do the same here.

The games that run horribly on M2 Ultra but run well on M2 Max is likely running into threadlocking issues- not uncommon in render systems (especially a decade ago and longer), since there’s often a physics thread, a game logic thread, a render thread, and the thread timing coming from V-sync. It’s very likely rendering 2 or 3 frames before it frees up another thread to put those graphics on the screen, so you’re only seeing every 2nd or 3rd frame rendered. And that’s completely understandable since the games were never designed for this CPU/GPU (though less understandable on Apple’s end). Fortunately, Apple provided tools to profile these games in Xcode Instruments, so you can visually see for yourself if this is the case - if you see the game’s render thread stacking up 2 or 3 threads before the Metal thread gets a chance to do anything -as can the game dev if they care to make some modest improvements to their threading code for us Mac gamers.

If you calculating all pixels on the screen the mentioned resolutions are pretty similar. 1920 x 1080 @ 120hz = 249 million pixels in each sec 2560 x 1440 @ 60hz = 221 million pixels in each sec 3840 x 2160 @ 30hz = 249 million pixels in each sec (the screen basically 2x higher and 2x taller like 1080p, and that 4x more pixels are compensated in the refresh 120 vs 30 also has the 4x difference) So each resolution calculating nearly the same amount of individual pixels in each sec, so the result about the same (2x or 4x more frames in each sec if you lower the resolution)

About ray-tracing support: Metal does have ray-tracing as part of the API, but it is all done through traditional GPU compute and therefore isn't nearly performant enough for games. Apple's GPU likely do not have ray-tracing acceleration hardware blocks as implemented by other GPU vendors yet, and should you use an AMD RDNA2 GPU in a compatible Mac Pro it won't take advantage of them either. That is why game developers are holding out on implementing ray-tracing until the hardware properly supports it.
@BrotherCheng
@BrotherCheng Жыл бұрын
There were also some rumors (from The Information) that the iPhone 14 Pro (A16) was originally supposed to support hardware-accelerated ray tracing. So it's possible that it's just delayed in its timeline in introduction to a later A17 chip. Given that M2 is based on A15 though, it may take some time for those features to make their way to the Apple Silicon line.
@tatianaes3354
@tatianaes3354 Жыл бұрын
@@BrotherChengToo bad Apple never cared too much about gaming. Otherwise, they would not be many years behind competition. But let’s hope they present a powerful ray-tracing unit to make a real competition to NVidia. Ideally, the next upgrade of Mac Pro should be a real alternative to a PC with a $1.5k NVidia card. And by that time Apple should contract all possible AAA studios so they would produce Metal games.
@BrotherCheng
@BrotherCheng Жыл бұрын
@@tatianaes3354 I don't think their hardware are many years behind competition though? Raw GPU performance is pretty competitive, and the issue is more on software support. (To be fair it's hard to do apples-to-apples comparisons because a lot of games are not ported natively, and the different GPU architectures makes it hard to directly compare)
@tatianaes3354
@tatianaes3354 Жыл бұрын
@@BrotherCheng Apple does not have ray-tracing acceleration cores, unlike NVidia and AMD (though AMD’s cores are a generation behind in performance). You can perfectly do hardware acceleration in general graphic cores (rather than specialised) and Metal does exactly that, but it takes away from FPS significantly because they become a shared resource. So there is no competition at all currently.

It is quite likely that the "Glue" between the 2 chips of the Ultra is the problem. Core to Core latency must be really high(CPUs being at the outer edges) and also the GPUs might have a "SLI" problem that can introduce hitching due to frame pacing problems introduced by basically having 2 separate GPUs...
@casperes0912
@casperes0912 Жыл бұрын
The memory is shared, and the architecture is entirely transparent. That is you cannot even try and write NUMA-aware code to place data closer to the memory attached to one die over the other. But the idea is that the ultra fusion fabric is fast enough to where the latency "should be" imperceptible. The implementations station may not be perfect, but it doesn't work-share like SLI, it uses the split GPU as if it were a single GPU and the idea is that the memory bandwidth across Ultra Fusion is good enough to cover for the latency delays. So you don't get the split frame rendering of SLI, but if the bandwidth is not good enough there's of course still issues. The best you can do from ad development perspective to increase memory residence is cache locality optimisations

Andrew, as a die-hard Mac user and avid game enjoyer, I love all you do for Mac gaming. But I really think you need to make it clear what GPT is and what it isn't. You are highlighting Windows games here, alongside native ports, as if it it's an official way for people to run Windows games. It's not, as you are well aware. It's designed for developers to see how their game runs "as-is" and to gauge a port's viability. People are stupid. They'll see your video, as well put together as it is, and take completely the wrong things from it. The Mac gaming subreddit is full of people treating this toolkit like it's the defacto way of playing games that previously weren't supported. They still aren't supported, and there's no guarantee of any support. This is some weapons-grade copium, getting Elden ring running at garbage fps at 1080p and treating it as a stable release. "When all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail" perfectly sums up the rabid desire to jerry-rig some games and go "THE FUTURE OF MAC GAMING IS FINALLY HERE!". If you keep perpetuating the toolkits viability, why would any developer bother to release a native port, at a time when there is already little to no incentive to do so?

The main thing is that performance in the GPT's preview mode is likely not going to get much better over time, since the whole point of it is to profile and evaluate where performance issues lie before porting the game. Automagically fixing said performance issues through software would be fairly counter-productive in that context. With Crossover rolling out their own DX12 support, chances are that they will leapfrog GPT in terms of performance over time.

@DerekDavis213
@DerekDavis213 Жыл бұрын
And one chip designed from the ground up with ARM technology is going to run games poorly that were designed for AMD/Intel x86 chips. Mac Studio with M2 Ultra is about $5000 USD. A Windows machine for $1500 is *MUCH* faster for gaming. It's no contest.
@El.Duder-ino

@@DerekDavis213 Of course, code written to run natively on x86 and Windows will always run faster on cheaper PC than Mac Studio with M2 Ultra which has to translate layers code to its ISA and try to to be twice as powerful as M2 Max with the Fusion interconnect packaging (silicon vias). However if u look at the code written and optimized for Apple's Mx chips there's NO contest when it comes to what these SOC's can deliver per watt of power battery or wall! Performance per watt and incredible efficiency is the most amazing feature of Apple's Mx chips since their inception. This is the awesome beauty of all ARM based and well optimized SOC's and with optimized code it runs amazingly with uncompromised efficiency. Apple leads in this field for years in the smartphones and tablets segment and now also in laptops and desktops. Maybe Qualcomm with Nuvia's chip improvements or Mediatek with Dimensity architecture will come closer to Apple's leading performance, but I think Apple will continue to improve their tightly optimized HW&SW formula to keep the lead at all costs. I am not saying I will replace PC with the Apple any time soon as I wouldn't find use of it, but I am honestly and sincerely impressed what they have achieved with the transition from x86 to their (ARM) silicon. Their chip R&D team and labs deserve without a doubt a very special recognition and respect!

Apple hasn't achieved anything new or innovative. Intel/AMD rejected this design this way as it would make the PC a closed system and un-upgradeable. Apple has essentially made a consumable. Andrew, did you try to disable Esync on Cyberpunk? I have M1 Ultra Mac Studio. With Esync on, I get 10 FPS in the benchmark, no matter what setting I use. When Esync is off, I get 20 FPS, though it is still slower than my M1 MacBook Air. BTW, there is no issue in Hogwarts Legacy, 30~60 FPS in 4K.

Well, you probably have not used SLI or Crossfire. There is a reason multi gpu did not catch on for gaming. As a developer, my hunch is that the two gpu chiplets of the m2 ultra either share memory, and one chip has to go to the slow path (numa), or there is a quirk on how work is submitted on M2U. Not familiar with Apple Silicon enough to have an informed opinion.

I'm having trouble finding comparable benchmarks, but I found a couple videos showing similar frame rates for RE Village on the RTX 4070 Ti at 4K max settings. I'm not sure how that compares to high settings, but it would be interesting to see an integrated GPU trade blows with a discrete desktop RTX 4070 Ti.

4k metalfx is actually rendering the game at 1440p. 4070ti is slightly faster than 3090...so look for vids on that
@twoeggcups
@twoeggcups Жыл бұрын
@@mosesdavid5536 The 4070 most certainly is not faster than the 3090, unless you’re cheating with frame generation. The M2 Ultra is nowhere near the performance of a 4070ti, however. The 4070ti is a 40 TFLOPS GPU, the M2 Ultra is less than 25 TFLOPS.

M2 Ultra is at best RTX4060ti. It's nowhere close to 4070. Using M2 Ultra to play games is like emulating a $400 GPU with overhead.
@twoeggcups
@twoeggcups Жыл бұрын
@@samic 4060 ti is a pretty good match in terms of FP32, but the M2 Ultra has far more memory bandwidth and VRAM. Of course, nVidia cards and drivers have been optimised for gaming for years, so I’d expect better gaming performance nine times out of ten.
@twoeggcups

I do think it’s a little misleading to describe the M2 Ultra as having an “integrated GPU” rather than being an SOC. A better comparison would be the SOCS found in the XBox Series X or the PS5.

When you play No Man's Sky on a M2 Mac what game controller are you using? I have been using a Sony DualSense wireless controller and also tried a Sony Dual Shock 4 controller, and both randomly lose connection during game play. I have to press the PlayStation button to reconnect the controller with the game. I tried disabling the Steam overlay and still have the issue. I have not experienced this with other games on M2 Mac (native, Rosseta 2, running via CrossOver, or running within Parallels Desktop), so I suspect it is specific to No Man's Sky. I am going try playing No Man's Sky with an Xbox Elite 2 controller to see if this avoids the controller connection dropout problem.

I would appreciate it if you tested especially the higher powered M2 parts at native resolutions more in addition to these settings that are, in fairness, ideal for a person trying to find a sweet spot between fps and graphics quality, instead of trying to benchmark and stress the M2 GPU as much as possible with as few CPU bottlenecks as possible (which is what the other half of your audience is trying to learn). Also, there are a lot of purists who'd rather prefer playing at a lower native res than a higher upscaled res, and I also don't agree with the tradeoff of a lower native res + high graphical settings for a higher upscaled res and lower graphical settings, which sometimes you seem to make.

Many games on mac have something really strange. For example, I have mac mini m2 pro 10/16 and Dota 2. I have 50-60 fps on low settings 1080p and stable 60 fps on almost max settings in 4k resolution. WHY? I don't know. It's not scale, it's just works strange. Many unoptimized games do have something and if you try some different graphic settings it can be really good.

I gave up when this guy said that gta v isnt very well optimized, like man u can get this game working on a potato with higher frame rates, its not that the game isnt optimized its just that its going trough many translation layers , its a windows binary that goes trough wine then trough that roesta thingy thats x86 to arm ASM and then then dxvk to metal so u get 3 layers of emulation pretty much , its not the games fault, its sad to see tech channels not doing their research
