It's been nearly 4 years since the M1 MacBook Air was released. In that time we've had a tonne of development not just to Apple silicon with the M2 and M3 chips, but to apps and programs in general. So, how does the M1 stack up in 2024? Is it still a good purchase? And what about all those controversies that popped up shortly after it's release?

Bought an M1 Air in 2020 and it has been absolutely flawless. It destroys my much newer Dell work laptop in every conceivable way: Faster, quieter, longer battery life, more reliable, superior build quality, better keyboard/trackpad, louder and clearer speakers, higher quality display, usable standby time and sleep state, etc. I can see myself using my M1 Air for another four years.

Same here I am artist moving all my workflow to Apple ecosystem (iMac, iPad) and now M2 MacBook Air compared to my HP laptop it is a powerhouse silent, portable and easy to use. I can do photo editing alongside some other tasks without any problems while my HP uses its fan or sometimes throttle. So I don´t need to upgrade until the M5 version. But for me the MacBook Air is the best laptop ever made.

It’s just a clickbait title. It really depends on how you use it. It’s now getting harder to push the limits of your computer. Even games, outside hardcore players, the Switch seems to suffice for most gamers. And that thing is about as powerful as a Samsung Galaxy s8 or something.

Plus, these KZbinrs forget the actual target audience for MB Airs, unlike the M3 Max MBP, they are not designed for ultra demanding tasks. MBA are brilliant and can even do light editing. Geekbench is great for comparisons but saying the M1 is old is incorrect. Like you said, people continue with older Macbooks

Still using a base M1 MacBook Air that I got a few years back when they started getting nice discounts. I still use it daily and it's my favorite laptop ever. I have a near fully loaded 16" M2 Max MacBook Pro that my employer provides, yet I still find myself gravitating to the MBA. Also, and I know I'm the oddball out here, but I actually prefer the keyboard on the M1 Air over the Pro. I have 2.2 TB written to the SSD with swap essentially in constant use with the amount of tabs I keep open. Maximum battery capacity still reports 100% (though I highly doubt that). For what I use it for, I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon. By far the best laptop purchase I have ever made.

It's a truly splendid little machine. Bought mine lightly used, almost perfect condition for £450 @ 2 yrs old. For that money it's an absolute steal. I prefer its chassis with the classic MBA wedge - makes it feel much thinner than it is. If it just had slightly thinner bezels the M2 would be totally redundant IMO. I think they'll support it for longer than usual as it's Apple Silicon and can handle more, plus they've been selling them new for so long. Marvellous things

I bought my M1 Air in mid 2023. It's only on 23 cycles and pretty much 100% battery health because I mainly use it at home with an app that limits its charge level. The only issue I've run into with it is with the base 256GB storage and having to offload Logic Pro libraries onto an external SSD that was slower than the internal one until I upgraded to a Thunderbolt SSD enclosure that gives nearly the same performance as the internal drive.

We had one of those and loved it, till last month ...when it just DIED for no good reason! It was fine when we put it away, all charged up, etc. It got very light usage as we both have desktop computers that are our main computers. When we went to use the 2015 MacBook Air again, a couple of weeks later, it was dead as a doornail. Tried all the tricks ...nope. It simply wouldn't turn on at all. We ended up just getting an M1 Macbook Air, because there were some very good deals on them. We like it okay, but there are a few features we don't like (the fact that it turns itself on whenever the lid gets lifted or jiggled, and then we have to go through a sign-in process in order to turn it off again...grrrr..) We much preferred the old 2015 model. Oh well... We have been using Macs since 1994, and I have to say that is the ONLY Mac we've ever had that just died. I guess that's a pretty good record.

I have owned my M1 MBP since December 2020 and I still daily drive it. The performance and battery life has been fantastic throughout my ownership, and I'll continue to use it until the day Apple drops support/updates. Even now, I have multiple laptops that are much newer and faster but I will still pop my M1 MBP into a bag over any of them unless I'm going to be gaming (and then I'll just take my steam deck). Since ownership, I used it for IT work for about 3 years and my hobbies (photography/videography) - building Windows images, working in virtual machines, supporting enterprise equipment etc.. The battery life and performance has been enough that I don't feel like I'm short on raw power, and I don't get battery anxiety at all. When this device is EOL I will happily upgrade to the new M series at that time - and before this M1 MBP I have never daily driven any of the macs I've owned (Intel iMac, Intel Macbook air). I really can't talk highly enough about my experience, and I'm eagerly watching the upcoming Windows for ARM space. It'll be a tough choice if both are offering competitive options at the time I am ready to buy its replacement.

I would not worry about not getting the latest Mac OS as I have a 2015 MB Pro 15 and it has not received the last two years OS updates and it has been great. Into its 9th year and surpassed my previous MB Pro that lasted eight years and was retired when the OG battery failed. The advantage of the M-chips is that you can charge them to 80% and easily get through a day’s use. By stopping at 80% you double the lifespan of the battery meaning you get 2000 full cycles before you reach 80% health. Worth doing for the majority. There are apps that manage that. My M1 MB Pro 13 base model which I use when out and about rather than lugging the MB Pro, is just as fast and maybe faster than new. Battery is still around 12-14 hours of light use and 8GB of RAM has never once been an issue for my typical workflow of browsers, office, email, media, social media, music, etc. I only use about 50GB of storage as everything is in the cloud, so 256GB is more than sufficient. I would not recommend the M1 Air anymore unless cost is paramount, as at $650 it is an absolute bargain for a premium ultrabook, getting close to lower mid-range in pricing. I understand that for 2024 this is Apple’s strategy, to continue making and selling these through third-party vendors, a stop-gap before the new similar priced MacBook 11 (or 12) arrives next year. Great for business, education, elderly parents that do not need much above light use and for those looking for the ultimate value. FWIW I noted that Dell have kept its 12-gen XPS 13 in stock at a similar price. Another trend Apple started that is great for consumers and showing all the negativity in comment sections as mostly unfair diatribes.

I’m banking on it. Was gonna get an M2 or M3 instead, but that price is just too attractive for the base M1 at WM. I’m hedging my bet against Apple that they’ll feel committed to the M1 MBA because of the relationship with WM. Otherwise they will disenfranchise all the new buyers of Macs by dropping support for what for those buyers was a brand new laptop, regardless how long it’s been on the market. I think the WM relationship just bought M1 users a lot longer support schedule than the M1 would have had otherwise. Fingers crossed.

@@billb8262 Of course, Apple will treat these Walmart-sold MBAs as fully authentic Macs. I think that's part of the appeal for the buyer. I fully expect that OS support and feature upgrades will be available for these NEW Macs for at least 3-4 years after Walmart first introduced them...and maybe longer. Bodes well for ALL Apple Silicon owners. Anyway, Apple already sells tons of their other doo-dads at WM....but they will only offer ONE (and the most entry-level) laptop at a time. If Apple can still turn a profit at $599.....look for these to come down in price around Back-to-School 2024 and be available thru Xmas

I have both the MacBook Air M1 and MacBook Air M2. Both of them are base version with 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. The M2 is slower, especially in heavy tasks like editing photos or video. I strongly believe that the reason is because of the single, not dual module something with the SSD on the MacBook Air M2. Therefore, that is a big difference and a weird decision made by Apple. It has been fixed in the M3 though.
@r3dp1ll

not weird. They needed to make a statement with the M1 and then from M2 they were back to their old ways of trying to milk the customer as much as possible. As in making you pay more to get better specs. The M1 was an anomaly. Probably the best laptop for the price to this day.

actually just bought an M1 from a pawn shop in the area, heavily discounted (480 CAN) because of a small crack in the lower corner. barely noticeable unless very dark or very bright colours are in that area. So no complaining! The speakers aren't very good though. Thankfully, I had already decided that if I were to pic up a Mac book finally, it would be used with my AirPods anyways. Pretty good deal if you ask me!

I know there is swap memory but if u r programming and don't want to get pop ups "out of ram" u should get 16gb. m1 also has better thermals. If u want better laptop u should get m1 with 16gb of ram and 256 of storage or the new 14 pro 16gb/512

Has anyone yet found out how long the M1 Macbooks Airs bought new in 2024 will continue to get Apple OS and Security updates? Perhaps will Apple base the update support on when the M1 device was bought new rather than basing them all on the 2020 initial release? This is a very important consideration for possible new M1 devices being bought new in 2024.

Perfectly happy M1 user here. It still works great and the power and battery life are quite good even after 3.5 years of almost daily usage and I don't see the need to upgrade it yet. Sure hope M1 machines (also Apple laptops and desktops in general) will get longer support than 7 years. 2017 (or even a lot older than those) Apple computers will be perfectly fine for most basic users for years to come and not getting updates does suck. Computers in general age a lot slower than phones and iPhone 6s got around 5 years of support (and has got some smaller bug fixes and security updates this year so around 7.5 years after launch!) so getting only 2 more years more than a phone for a fully fledged computer is laughable since I know many that have like 10 years old Apple laptops and desktops in daily use and they are still happily using them. 9-10 years would be perfect in my mind.

I was ever so close to pulling the trigger on a "new" MacBook Air M1", currently available at Walmart for $699 US.... until I watched this video. I already had the topic of longevity in the back of my mind. Your comments reinforced those concerns. I need to get at least 3 to 4 years out of a notebook... and I'm simply not convinced buying an M1 at this point would provide that kind of longevity. It's a gamble I can avoid by sticking with Intel. These decisions would be made easier if Apple would provide at least some guarantee of system support. Google already does this for ChromeOS and that guarantee has served to increase sales of even aging Chromebooks such as the Lenovo Duet 3. That device, even though now several years old, will continue to see O/S support through at least 2029. With Apple, I'm not nearly as convinced the M1 will see support through 2027. Just too much risk for me.
