Bought an M1 Air in 2020 and it has been absolutely flawless. It destroys my much newer Dell work laptop in every conceivable way: Faster, quieter, longer battery life, more reliable, superior build quality, better keyboard/trackpad, louder and clearer speakers, higher quality display, usable standby time and sleep state, etc. I can see myself using my M1 Air for another four years.

I’m banking on it. Was gonna get an M2 or M3 instead, but that price is just too attractive for the base M1 at WM. I’m hedging my bet against Apple that they’ll feel committed to the M1 MBA because of the relationship with WM. Otherwise they will disenfranchise all the new buyers of Macs by dropping support for what for those buyers was a brand new laptop, regardless how long it’s been on the market. I think the WM relationship just bought M1 users a lot longer support schedule than the M1 would have had otherwise. Fingers crossed.

@@billb8262 Of course, Apple will treat these Walmart-sold MBAs as fully authentic Macs. I think that's part of the appeal for the buyer. I would not worry about not getting the latest Mac OS as I have a 2015 MB Pro 15 and it has not received the last two years OS updates and it has been great. Into its 9th year and surpassed my previous MB Pro that lasted eight years and was retired when the OG battery failed. The advantage of the M-chips is that you can charge them to 80% and easily get through a day’s use. By stopping at 80% you double the lifespan of the battery meaning you get 2000 full cycles before you reach 80% health. Worth doing for the majority. There are apps that manage that. My M1 MB Pro 13 base model which I use when out and about rather than lugging the MB Pro, is just as fast and maybe faster than new. Battery is still around 12-14 hours of light use and 8GB of RAM has never once been an issue for my typical workflow of browsers, office, email, media, social media, music, etc. I only use about 50GB of storage as everything is in the cloud, so 256GB is more than sufficient. I would not recommend the M1 Air anymore unless cost is paramount, as at $650 it is an absolute bargain for a premium ultrabook, getting close to lower mid-range in pricing. I understand that for 2024 this is Apple’s strategy, to continue making and selling these through third-party vendors, a stop-gap before the new similar priced MacBook 11 (or 12) arrives next year. Great for business, education, elderly parents that do not need much above light use and for those looking for the ultimate value. FWIW I noted that Dell have kept its 12-gen XPS 13 in stock at a similar price. Another trend Apple started that is great for consumers and showing all the negativity in comment sections as mostly unfair diatribes.

I have owned my M1 MBP since December 2020 and I still daily drive it. The performance and battery life has been fantastic throughout my ownership, and I'll continue to use it until the day Apple drops support/updates. Even now, I have multiple laptops that are much newer and faster but I will still pop my M1 MBP into a bag over any of them unless I'm going to be gaming (and then I'll just take my steam deck). Since ownership, I used it for IT work for about 3 years and my hobbies (photography/videography) - building Windows images, working in virtual machines, supporting enterprise equipment etc.. The battery life and performance has been enough that I don't feel like I'm short on raw power, and I don't get battery anxiety at all. When this device is EOL I will happily upgrade to the new M series at that time - and before this M1 MBP I have never daily driven any of the macs I've owned (Intel iMac, Intel Macbook air). I really can't talk highly enough about my experience, and I'm eagerly watching the upcoming Windows for ARM space. It'll be a tough choice if both are offering competitive options at the time I am ready to buy its replacement.

Nope. I think that WM relationship just guaranteed (I hope) that the M1 MBA will be supported longer than it would if that relationship didn’t exist. Think it just bought the M1 Air a few more years of support to avoid angering the new Mac users Walmart will create. I’m buying one myself after looking heavily at Windows machines to avoid the Apple tax on RAM and storage. But none of those machines perform like the M1/M2/M3 unplugged and their batteries don’t hold a charge like the MBA if doing much of anything unplugged. For me the M1 base is still powerful enough to handle my photo editing requirements and work tasks with only 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. I’ll buy an external SSD to go with it later. Did you see Max Tech’s video about Apple selling the M1 MBA base through Walmart for $699?
@bjmajor3 ай бұрын
I do not like the fact that the chassis of the M2 and M3 no longer have the wedge shape which has always distinguished the MacBook Air. Now they look like every other small MacBook out there. I also hate the fact that it no longer says "MacBook Air" underneath the screen. What gives with Apple not wanting people to know what model this is???? Both those changes were very stupid moves, IMHO. As for performance, my M1 Air is humming along just fine with no issues at all to report. Extremely satisfied with it and will not upgrade!!

I’m still using a 2012 Mac mini in 2024. It still works great. The 2020 MacBook Air will be great for at least another 7 years. Don’t waste your money on a new m2 or m3 unless you’re a heavy content creator. 😊

The M1 MacBook Air is not that old and since it has the same architecture as the M1 Pro/Max/Ultra CPUs. It will be supported for a long time. It’s still unbelievably fast and it’s also the last apple silicon MacBook Air that does not have parts pairing. Making it easy to replace parts

Shame Apple doesn’t make promises, but looking at their iPad track record, I would say minimum 6-7 years, so maybe 2-3 more years? It the or would be priceless if they could make it last 10. Then again they have a bad track record for gen 1 products. I just used the iPad Pro, as that was a gen1 product that got a lot of support.

The life of computers are getting longer and longer. When I was a kid, a 3 year old computer was very obsolete. But i have a cheap 2017 Dell laptop (just an i5) and it browses the web and runs windows flawlessly. Still a very usable product for basic computing. The M1 MBA, which is my main machine, was such a monumental leap in performance and battery compared to what came before it. I wouldn't be surprised if we are looking at a 15+ year usable service life. I'll let you know in 11 years time.

Since they've started selling the M1 Air at Walmart at $699, I Apple and third partiy apps will keep supporting these machines for a long time. However, I think it would be a good idea for them to keep the Walmart models at that price, keep the older style chassis, and bump it up to M2 in the next year or so. That would save money on costs to keep it as low as Apple is willing to go with it while offering a lowest end option. Think of it as a "MacBook SE" type thing.

actually just bought an M1 from a pawn shop in the area, heavily discounted (480 CAN) because of a small crack in the lower corner. barely noticeable unless very dark or very bright colours are in that area. So no complaining! The speakers aren't very good though. Thankfully, I had already decided that if I were to pic up a Mac book finally, it would be used with my AirPods anyways. Pretty good deal if you ask me!

Chill, Dude......It's likely that Apple will offer OS upgrades and feature support for the M1 MBA for at least 3-5 years (likely longer) as part of the deal they made to allow WM to carry it. M1 Macs won't go "vintage" for ages. Apple Silicon has changed the game in regards to useable, productive "lifespans".

Perfectly happy M1 user here. It still works great and the power and battery life are quite good even after 3.5 years of almost daily usage and I don't see the need to upgrade it yet. Sure hope M1 machines (also Apple laptops and desktops in general) will get longer support than 7 years. 2017 (or even a lot older than those) Apple computers will be perfectly fine for most basic users for years to come and not getting updates does suck. Computers in general age a lot slower than phones and iPhone 6s got around 5 years of support (and has got some smaller bug fixes and security updates this year so around 7.5 years after launch!) so getting only 2 more years more than a phone for a fully fledged computer is laughable since I know many that have like 10 years old Apple laptops and desktops in daily use and they are still happily using them. 9-10 years would be perfect in my mind.
@paulharrison83795 ай бұрын
There are no significant CPU or GPU design improvements in the M2 and M3 over the M1. The only reason for a slightly higher performance is increases in clock frequency which generate more heat. The M4 is about 15% faster at a given clock frequency. This means that the M1 is still completely usable. It is more important to fit 16 Gb of RAM and a 512 Gb SSD than to buy a newer processor.
@tomsun31593 ай бұрын
Battery replacement kit from ifixit costs 110,46€, so a total second life. You are completely right the people that have a performance problem on a M1 MBA don't need a M2 or M3 or M4 MBA they need a MPB with MPro or MMax chip whatever generation and probably more RAM. Valid thoughts are in my opinion need a bigger Display, need MORE RAM as it is limiting me or need a bigger Storage inside (But external Thunderbolt enclosure with NVME is the more economic version). M3 or M2 are not really reasons to upgrade the M1 is still lightning fast. I came from a decade of Thinkpads and upgraded them to the max in the past (Ram Maximized, I5 dualcore to i7 quadcore, HDD to SSD, HD TN to FHD IPS), if you compare the M1 MBA its speed is fully sufficient for all terms of usage except real gaming or workstation stuff, if you want to game use a console or agaming PC if you want to do workstation stuff use a workstation. Always use the right tool for your needs. Don't use your butter knife to cut trees dont use your axe to spread peanut butter on your bread.

I think battery lifetime is not the issue cause, let's be honest, MacBook batteries are consumables. You just use it for 1k cycles or to 80% health and replace it. You can just do it yourself, there are plenty of tutorials and it's safe if you do it carefully. If not, you don't have to go and pay Apple an extra something to replace it, just go with a local repair shop
