The most important announcement today was that M2 and M3 MacBook Airs would now all have a minimum RAM memory of 16 Gb. High street shops in the UK only ever sell base models and so it means that now for the first time it will be possible to purchase 16 Gb MacBook Airs from these shops.

The baseline M4 is a major upgrade over the baseline M3… Doubled the RAM to 16GB, space black option, added 3rd Thunderbolt port on the right side, and better battery (up to 24 hours, M3 was up to 22 hours). All while keeping the price essentially the same. That’s definitely a good Apple! 👍🏻🍎

The best way to play it! They'll probably release a revamped model with micro-led in 2025 or 2026, I'd get the max chip then and not upgrade until the next big change, which will be in around 5-6 years.

I got an M3 max MBP this year upgraded from the 2016 MBP. Though im excited for this model, I won’t be upgrading till atleast the M6 models lol. If you’re still using the pre M1 products I’d highly recommend upgrading. The performance comparisons will blow you away.

Just Returned the M3 Pro 16 and will be going for the M4 Pro 16. I’m sure I won’t see much of a difference in performance, but I was upgrading from a 2015 MBP 13” intel. So I just want my MacBooks to last as long as they can.

I'm still using my M2 Max for video editing work, and just like you the reason I think I won't upgrade is because the limiting factor for me performance wise is not the cpu or gpu but the video encoding/decoding engines. If those haven't been dramatically upgraded then I don't expect to see much performance improvement at all between the M2 Max and M4 Max, at least for what I do in my video work.

16GB on the base models is a welcome improvement. But the storage upgrades are still prohibitive. Many would-be upgraders are probably going to continue to resist buying because they cannot get a reasonable price on a reasonable amount of storage.

Tomorrow I wish that they announce a new Mac Studio line with cheaper larger monitors, and M4 Ultra chips twice or four times as fast as the M4 Max, and a new Mac Pro with space and connections for internal storage, additional RAM, upgradable boot striped SSDs using standard hardware, and PCI expansion slots with support for 3rd party graphics cards.

Brian: I am in the same boat as you. I have the maxed out M1 MacBook Pro 16 inch. I don’t see the need to go to the M4 just yet is less than twice as fast on some scores. If anything I would probably order a Mac Mini if I have the urge for the M4:). I have had my MB Pro for over four years now and it is still plenty fast I purchased it with 32GB of ram. Looking at why one Mac skipping M4 upgrade, but still retaining Mac Studio with M2 Max, it's evident that Apple not convinced M4 is a worthy upgrade. Benchmarking we see are due to added performance cores or extra RAM.

Good breakdown, Brian... So, you’re saying we need those two extra cores in the M4 Max? Please, those cores are basically just overpaid supervisors, hanging around to give the 12-core CPU on the M4 Pro a coffee break once in a while. The M4 Pro’s already handling everything like a champ-those extra cores are just there to stand around and look important. You’re paying top dollar so a couple of CPU cores can pretend they’re ‘managing’ while the real work gets done without breaking a sweat. Save your money-the M4 Pro’s already more than you’ll ever need!

Brian (or really anyone), do you know what the bottleneck is when I use Adobe Media Encoder to convert a 25 GB .MOV file into a much smaller.MP4 file? The process takes like half an hour on my M1 Pro MBP, but CPU usage during this is low (like 10%) and I don’t see that the SSD is being throttled. I’m wondering if upgrading to this new M4 Max MBP will cut the time down a lot…

If CPU is low, then it's using the AME (Apple Media Engine). AME officially supports: H.264 (AVC), H.265 (HEVC), VP9 ProRes and ProRes Raw. MOV generally uses one of those codecs, primarily MPEG-4 (though, not always*). So, you're *almost certainly* hitting the limit of what the AME can process. The change from M1/M1 Pro to M4 Max is that the M4 Max AME can process TWO streams at once. (M1 Max can process 2 and M1 Ultra can process 4.) So... you'd be able to do two videos at once but likely wouldn't have any major improvements in the processing time of a single file... or at least no improvements that Apple actively advertises. Apple calls this the "Enhanced Media Engine", with the implication being the "enhanced" part is just being able to support two files at once. I hope that answers your question. *"MOV is a container format which can hold video encoded by H.264, HEVC, CineForm, ProRes, or DNxHD."

You can buy an amazing Dell 4K Ultrasharp like the Dell S2721QS for $253, making the total come in to $47 less than the cheapest iMac. Plus, the Mac Mini has 10 M4 CPU/GPU cores where the iMac has 8/8, unless you spend an extra $200. You'd then be comparing a 24" iMac with dual 27" 4K Dell monitors. You could also get something like the 32" 4K Dell S3221QS or 27" LG Ultrafine monitors (Apple monitors are rebranded LG products.) for $225.

That is very exciting! I purchased the M4 iPad Pro and I love it! The battery life is way better than the iPad Pro from 2018 which I had for five years. However, when it comes to a desktop, I am a Windows PC user. Most of the people that I know are Windows users. I still know a few people that are Mac users but those that I asked about getting a new computer said stick with Windows.

It is so funny to hear Apple go after it’s own product line of Intel and M1 chip Mac users. But they seemed to leave out Apple’s close and personal friend called meaningless minuscule upgrades. Oops I mean the M2 and M3 chips because they wouldn’t dare compare the M4 to the M3 now would they. As far as the memory and the storage configurations are concerned, Apple has just taken away from themselves in defending that these two things are pennies on the dollar since you’re giving it away for free now.
