They are designed to defeat light armor. Such as mild steel up to 1/2 inch thick. Maybe 3/4 inch thick but no guarantee. But hardened steel they will not penetrate. They are meant to take out small vehicles and their occupants inside. Or perhaps to bust through cynder block walls someone is hiding behind.

What is with everyone telling this guy to run and put down the burgers? I get he is overweight and he should concentrate on his health more, but just because he’s shooting at a gun range doesn’t mean he has to be in shape. There’s nothing wrong with encouragement and trying to help him, but insulting him or belittling him doesn’t help. I went from 250 pounds to 180, now I’m building muscle and in great shape, I did it on my own willpower and some encouragement, but people belittling me and saying crap like that, didn’t help me. All I’m saying is, guys, have some manners. But good video bud, do it when you can and have some time, not because people are trying to make you feel down about yourself. They don’t live your life. Just cut out some junk food like soda and desert, and do a bit of cardio once or twice a week when you can, the pounds will fall off. And great shooting. I’ll sub.

Why do people wear plate carriers at the range? Are you practicing reloads for home defense and wearing your plate carrier around the house 24/7? I've never understood the need to wear a plate carrier at the range.

Some hilarious takes on what M855 is 'intended' or 'designed' to do in the comments. As for why it was adopted by NATO (SS109) in the 1977-1980 trials, it was due to concerns on MG effectiveness, and the primary difference was that SS109 could penetrate a soviet pot helmet at 600 yards while M193 cannot. M855 is heavier and retains energy over longer distances. It has no inherent AP effect. A mild steel core is only marginally (if even, arguably worse) at AP than a lead core.
