I have never regretted my M1 Macmini, and now the M4 is tempting (and cheaper then the one I have when I got it). Crazy, but nice. I also have a 2013 macbook pro and a 2014 mac air that both work fine, but with no OS support, but still useful for many things.

Mary, I believe we reached that point with the M1 - gamers and serious data crunchers aside, most of the current offerings from Apple, AMD and Intel are more than enough for home users. If I used even 10% of the resources on this model Intel box most days I would be surprised.

I play the guitar casually so that's really the extent of my creative side, but I have a Windows gaming laptop and desktop, both with Nvidia RTX graphics so I don't necessarily need a new computer. However, the new Mac Mini with its M4 SOC is an incredible deal for sure and I'd totally grab one if I was in the need for a new computer. My first computer I owned (didn't share with family) was an intel Core Duo iMac back in the mid 2000s that I got to start college, and that thing lasted me about 8 years even with just 3GB of ram. That said, I'm too invested into the Windows/Android side of things nowadays to convert back.

One of my favourite trivia facts from the old PC vs Mac days (the 1990's) is that Microsoft approached Brian Eno to create the startup sound for their new operating system, Windows 95. Brian said ok, went home, and made it on his Mac. Apple has always been a favourite of creatives. 😃
@SamHocking
@SamHocking 20 күн бұрын
To be fair, back in 94/95, musicians like Eno were either MacOS or deeply within an Atari and/or hardware sequencer and sampler setup still. Wasn't until 97 and ASIO that many of us Atari/HW users made the choice to switch to MacOS or Windows for the studio. I'd say today, x86 and Windows/Linux has the edge when it comes to raw audio dsp performance, I get more done on the PC than my M2 Ultra, but just because it's around 30% faster. M4 i'm yet to test. Looking at some benchmarks Apple are still not quite in the big league with PC top end x86 workstations when it comes to outright performance, but it's definitely much closer now. It'd a great time for both architectures.

It's great for creatives if they look for constant backward compatibility headaches.
@SamHocking
@SamHocking 20 күн бұрын
@@zyguli The thing is the creative types are generally not buying Apple for long-term backwards compatibility or performance necessarily like PC buyers are as this video proves. I'd say most Apple purchases are 50% vanity purchase (you have to be seen to be using Apple in the creative industries for some weird reason) and 50% you have to buy Apple because everyone else in the industry has bought Apple out vanity before you so there's a subconscious industry standard that's developed the last 30 years or so. End of the day when you want performance you buy a PC (Gamers, 3D graphics, Audio DSP, AI/Machine Learning etc) and when you need to be seen with a computer or look 'professional' you buy a Mac. I used to work in a video production place and could never work out why everyone had an iMac on their desk when some of the work being does was better suited and much faster on PC and the director said it was worth spending £27K more on macs and losing 30% productivity because when a potential client walks through the door it looks more professional. Actual ROI losses in one way were offset by what he thought was more contracts for higher values. It's a strange world.
@rossdonald594
@rossdonald594 19 күн бұрын
@@SamHocking I have to disagree with most of your comments. Vanity?!!!!! I don't give a hoot about the badge on the box, but if as a user you are even one percent artistic, you'll recognise the beauty in using the Apple interface. It's not all about grunt. Believe me, it's not.
@SamHocking
@SamHocking 19 күн бұрын
@@rossdonald594 I own and work with Windows & MacOS for music production, there really isn't any difference and the OS or even hardware itself isn't what I'm interacting with other than to click and icon to open the actual application I'm working with, so for music, all I care about is how much audio DSP can I keep realtime rather than bouncing, when video editing all i care about is the time i'm waiting to render or not using proxy media and when working in anything AI based all I care about is learning and inference time. The tasks I have to do each day that require me to use either the windows pc or mac mini comes mostly down to if the software exists for windows or not. The pc and mac just sits in a rack with the other gear.

When the M4 Mac Studio drops tho! Then the M5 and M6 😰😄 We can think “this is so powerful it’ll last five years at least” but marketing and shiny new hype get many of us upgrading way before that. And again we tell ourselves “this time this is deffo last me years it’s so powerful!” Then we upgrade within a two years again. They sell themselves, we have to fight that urge. (Like buying that “one best beater or tool watch” for our taste, then another then another. Each time the lust and romance drawing us to a new “this will last a lifetime” purchase leaving us blind to the collection we already own and love that already ticks the same boxes. Buttt we don’t have a blue one yet, with an digital dial, and is solar 😄)

I've been a Mac user since 1991 or so, and in many cases I'm the prototypical Apple user. I'm not overly concerned with specs and I've never been a gamer. What I want from computers, phones, tablets or cameras, is that they work properly and intuitively and help me be productive without requiring me to be an engineer. It definitely depends on the software. I sold my M1 MacBook Pro and replaced it with a powerful PC with an Nvidia RTX 4060ti. When the GPU comes into play, it crushes the Mac or when I’m doing software video encoding, the PC also comes out on top (by far) but for a lot of software the PC just doesn’t run well. I think it’s likely quirks with Windows 11 but who knows. I’ve come to the conclusion that for pure number crunching, the PC is superior but depending on the software, the Mac offers a better experience.

@@bradovard8657 I'd agree with that. Apple's complete avoidance of software and hardware interoperability, legacy support and short use life, while also avoiding standards / containing them as their own version does mean they have a pretty easy life as literally support about a dozen different bits of hardware before making it obsolete. Meanwhile windows still has to support software and hardware 30 years old and so that does mean stability is harder to come by out the box.

When it was time to upgrade, I decided I'd try a MacBook Pro. The difference in performance was stunning. Videos that took hours to render on the Windows computer took mere minutes using the MBP. Not long after getting my MBP, I started taking audio engineering classes. I was happy that I had some Mac experience as the systems at my college were all Mac. They integrate well with Pro Tools. I have based my home recording studio and mobile recording rig on Mac laptop's. I'm am using a 2015, 2.8, 16 1TB MBP for my mobile recording rig. Minimal investment. Maximum return! It was the best $100.00 I've ever spent. It's hard to believe that it retailed for nearly $3K when it was new back in 2015.

Listening to you describe your work philosophy reminds me of my own in the 1990s. I was an early adopter of Macs in graphic design, so early that most print shops couldn't take a floppy disk or use an Adobe font I had used. By the early 2000s, technology sped up but my work methods changed little. Now, 30 years later, I still have some of those work habits from my early years but have adapted to newer software *as the need arises.* I no longer care how new the software is. I've been there before. In 1988, you could make a solid drop shadow in MacPaint so everyone did. Now, with AI. people are doing fantastical things using it. It's all trendy. Good work never looses its effectivness. I will say, however, that as you grow in knowledge and maturity, the story becomes more present than the hardware and software. I would suggest reflecting on your workflow as you age and see what you come up with.

Though not a spec review I enjoyed your view on the Mac mini and other offerings. So often I get slightly annoyed by tech reviewers acting like corporate news media, focusing on negatives and missing the positives. They’re often like “Why doesn’t it fly”. In this age of rapid tech innovation people have become a bit jaded and often don’t recognize the work, trial and error that goes into producing new capabilities in the hardware and software realms. I’m also excited about the new offerings and happy that I’ll be buying a few products at this time versus a year ago.

Some KZbinrs talk about their “ecosystem” when all they really have are a bunch of Apple products, but you truly have one. I traded in my M1 Max Studio for an M3 Pro MacBook Pro 14 thinking I didn’t need both, and I’ve always regretted it. I like the convenience and versatility of having both a desktop and laptop because I travel a lot. My new M4 Mac mini, base model, nicely fills the desktop void and, at a third of the price, outperforms my MBP (and certainly my Studio). Thanks for sharing.l

I had my firs Apple product 3 years ago. It's Macbook Air M1 base model and it just blown away my old PC that suck 600W to do way less than that M1. I still can do my job on that M1 Macbook Air but sometimes I feel that it has only 8GB of RAM. So I got the Mac Mini M4... I don't know if it's gonna make a difference from a Mac Studio but for me from M1 base model is a huge leap and I feel like I am futureproofed for the next 5 if not 10 years for what I am doing with it!

At the moment I have an iPhone 14 and an iPad 10th gen, I don’t have a Computer at the moment, my son has it (on permanent loan 🙄), bearing in mind that I manage to do digital art, photography and editing plus create my own music using GarageBand I think an M4 mini would be an amazing addition and be a great setup for just about anything I want to do in the future. I do really like how easy it is to work with machines that speak the same language, it makes things so much easier!

I got the M4 Mini (500GB, 24G RAM) and it is fantstic so far. Audio is rendered quickly and graphics and everything else runs without a hitch. The only complaint I have at this time is that BS that goes on when using plugins and transferring them over to a new machine. The Waves stuff I accumulated won't work on it, but the UAD, Izotope, and Softube stuff that I love, run like a top.

Earlier this year I bought a M2 Pro Mini with 32 GB of RAM. For the music productions I do it's more than enough and will be perfect for me for many years to come. For fun I always like to max out a Mac computer on their website and pretend I'd just won the lottery, but then I come back to reality and figure out what I actually really need. It's mostly always about maxing out the RAM to future proof the computer as much as possible.

I switched to Apple 9 years ago. I use an iMac in my studio and MacBook Pro for mobile use. Love them both but it’s time for an upgrade. Only issue is the price Apple charge for memory and SSD upgrades. I do feel that Apple are ripping people off on that front. But the new mini looks great and may well be my next purchase if a new Mac Studio doesn’t arrive in the spring next year and even then, the mini may be all I can afford! The thing with Macs is they work. Simple as that. I used PCs for years and constantly had issues with crashes and drivers etc. So I think the extra outlay for a Mac is worth it to me.

The only downside to Apple is the difficulty of software piracy-it's hard to pirate software on their platform. That said, their security is top-notch. Apart from that, Apple products are amazing. I’m considering upgrading my MacBook Pro to the M4, though I might wait another year or two. My current MacBook Pro is still in excellent, almost-new condition. I only use it at home or in the studio on a hard surface (my table) to ensure the fans don’t overheat-and let’s face it, you’re not really supposed to use it on your lap anyway (just saying). Overall, it’s a solid product, especially for creative users.

The Mac Mini is just the starting point of the revamped product line. The new MacBook Pro and iMac models all have the same M4 chip, and could potentially serve your needs just as well. (And I suppose we’ll have an M4 Ultra version in the next Mac Studio.) The M2 and M3 were really iterative improvements on the M1, but the M4 is the point where they’ve managed yet another big leap.

You're absolutely right, dear Mary. I was honestly surprised to see this video from you, but I quickly realized that: a) you absolutely know what you are talking about and b) you are absolutely right about everything you say (and show). I've been an Apple user for a really long time and I've always been impressed by the whole system. Of course, there has been justified criticism of some of the decisions Apple has made; I have also been very annoyed by some of the company's policies - but at the end of the day, in my opinion, you get a bit more bang for your buck with Apple than elsewhere. I really wasn't/am not a hardcore fan, but always open to “other worlds”. But I personally always felt creatively better off with Apple and it was simply considerations in the creative sense that brought me to Apple products time and time again. Very good video with a lot of valuable personal experience from you! Thank you, thumbs up and see you soon...Best greetings from Germany. Michael

A maxed out new Mini (M4 Pro 10 P cores, 4 E cores, 64 GB RAM) is going to be better in most ways compared to a 12.5% more expensive base model Studio with 12 core M2 Max, 8 slower P cores, 4 E cores, 64 GB RAM, but the Studio can be taken FAR ABOVE the Mini with M2 Ultra (24 cores, 16 P, 8 E, 192 GB RAM) for 2.5x the price. I don't know which Studio Mary has, and the new Mini will be enough for many people. Personally I'm still delighted with my original 2020 M1 Mini with 4 P cores and 4 E cores and 16 GB RAM for my web browsing and running the UIs remotely for my x86 workhorses (32 core Threadripper water cooled tower PC with 128 GB RAM, and 24 core i9-13900HX laptop with 32 GB RAM (soon 64)) and my numerous RISC-V and Arm SBCs.

@@BruceHoult tbf the benchmark stats of the m4 pro mini fully spec actually wreck the M2 Max studio. The M2 Ultra pro cheese grater fully specced beat the m4 pro, obviously, but you're paying 4-5 times the price and it doesn't wreck it; its about 15% faster in rendering, single core is about 11% better, it's also literally 25 times the size haha. the m4 pro mini is insane. I was about to drop a big chunk on the higher spec Mac Studio or pro, but the people in the Apple Store literally showed me the benchmark specs on geek bench, which is insane as their job is to sell a more expensive product they made a little miracle right there

Apple's just on the same level as mini-PCs, no better, and worse for price/performance. Earlier this year I bought a mini-PC that's actually _smaller_ than the Mac Mini, with an AMD Ryzen 7 7735HS (a processor now almost two years old, but benchmarks about dead even with the M4 10 Core), 32 GB RAM (64 GB max), three video outputs, two M2 drive slots, and a 1 TB SSD for about $700. That's a $100 more than the cheapest Mac Mini, but gives you more RAM and storage than the $1000 Mac Mini. The M4 Pro 12 Core is a little faster (less than 10%) than a Ryzen 9 7940HS (another typical mini-PC processor), but then again the 7940HS is a year and a half old now, not newly released. Mini-PCs with that are going for under $1000, with more RAM and storage than the $1400 Mac Mini with the M4 Pro. I get that there are other things about Apple that many people find great, but all the excitement over the new levels of CPU power is really just due to Apple over the past decade or more not providing particularly high-powered machines, and the hardware is still very poor value for money. (But of course you get the software, design, etc. for what you're paying, which appeals to many.)

@@MorfMusic I heard the new M4 Studios should be out in Q2, so it will be interesting to see how they perform. What I noticed when the M2 Studios came out is that they were similarly priced to the M1 versions. They seemed to price based on the higher or lower spec processor, not on the newer or older processor, so the lower spec M2 Ultra was priced the same as the lower spec M1 Ultra, but it had a similar core count to the higher spec M1 Ultra. Essentially, you could buy 2x the performance for the lower price if you got the M2 over the M1. If that hold true this time, we might see the Studios with way more performance available for similar prices.

Never thought I’d say Mary is wrong but… Coincidence the clip showed was Barcelona as it was there, back in the early 90s I got a second hand Atari ST, with a max drive of 1MB (the floppy) RAM well under 1MB and a pirate of Cubase. With it I taught myself how to use a computer, use MIDI with my Korg M1 and record onto a Tascam 4 track cassette. Every part of this was an uphill learning curve but the results, apart from the tape hiss, were just as good as my current 64GB RAM PC using Ableton (paid for!). By having so much power and possibilities at hand nowadays we miss out on the process of trying to find a way round huge problems and that hunt often leads to creative departures and exploratory offshoots. Think how The Beatles/George Martin pushed the boundaries of 4-track recording. The reason today’s music is so samey is there is no horizon to try and get over, there’s no adventure of self-discovery. On the music side: Keep away from the tech, guys, it will actually slow your creativity down. However, Promotion side: Keep the iPhone rolling!

I think Apple is fantastic in their niche processes. As a software dev they are great for their support into the stuff we do. As an editor, artist the same is to be said. For a general purpose machine, a pc is hard to beat for price performance. You can do most things on any computer, but you have to work a little more to get your flow. Even more so for Linux and other free variants. So yeah, glad you inspired and it just works for you! I use both, my sound engineering, and personal stuff is pc, My video editing and engineering work is Mac. Have fun!

Still running my i5 2018 Mac Mini, only change was to upgrade it (myself) to 32gb RAM. Can't do that with newer models. I never over-stress the machine, but then any game playing is done on my xbox anyway, so it's just music and video on this thing really. The only thing that is likely to die is the SSD in the end. Until then, no real need to bother upgrading !

I've been humming and hawing over a mini vs Studio decision … right up till I heard that Sequoia 15.1 finally and absolutely disallows the running of unsigned apps. For a fixed group of studio applications, this wouldn't bother me, but I use all sorts of unsigned apps in the course of my daily computing. So, I'm really at a loss to being able to buy a new Mac to use as a daily driver.
