Have you asked yourself why it bothers you though? Did you invest in this image not realising it was unachievable? It used to bother me too. Less so now that I’ve had ample time to come to terms with the fact that we’re not gonna look like these people or the KZbin fitness types unless you go to unreasonable lengths to achieve or maintain a certain look, and none of it makes you any happier. I’d rather enjoy the journey and maintain a good physique that paints the picture of someone who’s mentally healthy in addition to being physically fit. Pulsating and disproportional biceps, giant flared lats, and a sleazy fake tan make a man look like an emotionally damaged, neurotic mess who cares way too much of how he’s perceived. @@bimbowithadegree420 And yet, many intersections femenist analysis still puts it as secondary. Women's issues should not be shut down, but it's not a minor issue in feminism. Musandry is massive in the movement, and too often defended by femenist the way misogyny is defended by gamers.
@bimbowithadegree4203 жыл бұрын
@@Thumbdumpandthebumpchump I can't really speak for all feminists and for the misandry in the movement, I think its however important to understand that mainstream feminism is not intersectional feminism based on a q***r analysis of gender; its instead liberal feminism co opting the aesthetics of intersectionality while really just focusing on the struggles of white middle class and upper class women (what I mean by mainstream is the buzzfeed type, pop feminism and the major liberal institutions) and that has been an issue within feminist movements from the get go (back in the suffrage stage, black women were often left out of feminist spaces and working class women as well, for example). This is why we should understand that first and foremost feminism is a theoretical lense, and that there isn't a single feminism, there's feminisms. Each branch varied and taking its own approach, however to me what is more convincing and more prepared to deal with gender systems and concern itself with everyone who it harms, is intersectional feminism based on a qu**r lense. This is because it looks at how we have constructed gender roles and expectations and how it has harmed everyone involved even if in different ways, or if originally meant to aid them. It looks at the way men are seen as less than men if they are raped and often are ridiculed and not taken seriously when it does happen; but it also looks at how women are often targets of harassment at work and the constant enlargement of their bodily rights. It looks at how gay men are ridiculed for being less as not living up to masculinity since they are associated with the feminine; but also how lesbian women are seen as lesser women because they are not often interested or attracted to pursuing ideals of feminity; it also validates trans struggles by understanding how much of what we are expected to do within society- ie the definition of gender- are socially and narrowly constructed standards. It cares about everyone, it understands the need to make gender constructions something that helps everyone. I am not gonna tell you there aren't issues with the modern mainstream feminist movement, coming from a leftist lense- yes there are, but where I am coming from I can't answer for that, what I can do, and what I have seen happen more in the last two years, is push back from this status quo, neo liberal form of feminist activism and advocacy, to a model that more closely aligns with my values 😀 I would recommend you look into Judith Butler and other qu**r feminist theorists they helped me imensly undertand all I do now 😀

You are correct and this is why this situation cannot be fixed or remedied in a satisfactory way. Just look at beautiful women in the industry. They are the big thing when they are in their 20s but as soon as they hit their 30s they start losing roles. In most cases, these women still look great but they are competing against a horde of younger, hotter women. These older women either go to extreme lengths (bad physical surgery) to keep roles or they just suck it up and realize the reality if the situation .. same goes for the men.. it’s definitely a business I’d want no part of

right look at tony ja, jet li, jackie chan, donny yen, scott adkins, micheal jai white (no really look at white he looks big but it's because he's tall, he's not that insanely muscular, it's mostly lighting) look at a number of martial arts stars and you'll see, if you ACTUALLY freeze frame and look at them, they have decent, but not unrealistic physiques, probably because like keanu, they train for their role the way the character in the movie would have trained, i don't see john wick going to the gym seven times a day, i could see him doing workout maybe three to four times a week, 45 to an hour a day, and then going and practcing guns and jiujitsu etc, just like the other actors i mentioned they mostly train in their martial arts, sept white, i'm sure white lifts, but i doubt he lifts more than average, which again is like, an hour or so a day, three to five times a week, give or take, now don't get me wrong, YOU CAN workout six times a week, two hours a day, but that is with a split routine, ya know, mon-arms, tue-chest, wed-legs, thur-back, etc, me and a buddy used to workout like that all the time, we'd get off work, go to the gym at midnight and get out around 2 or 3 o clock in the morning, it got results, but we also go the whole next day and day after that etc to rest the part we worked out that night, sorry for being long winded, good video

Partly because there are different types of functional fitness depending on what you are trying to get your body to do. At the top of their games a heavyweight boxer looks very different to a Kung Fu black belt who looks very different to an Olympic sprinter who is different again to a pro cyclist. Even within cycling you can often tell the difference between a circle track sprinter and a Tour de France pro. Meanwhile Hollywood has slowly been making everyone look like a bodybuilder, which often translates to low functional fitness because you're carrying around too much muscle in places that impede flexibility or running and make you tired faster. I appreciate not having a completely jacked Batman because while yes, he's supposed to be big, he's also supposed to be able to run around on rooftops for hours and be so stealthy he can sneak up on ninjas while clinging to ceiling beams. I like rock climbing and it's always fun being in the climbing gym with weights gym junkies who struggle to finish a single climb without being too exhausted while my semi-fit ass keeps going, partly because of technique, and partly because I'm not lifting up muscles that are stopping me from getting my full range of motion from extended to tightly crouched.

I challenge any male who has gotten into weight lifting of any kind to not struggle with body dysmorphia. I was so fat after uni, I started lifting to lose the weight which also meant I put on a little muscle, so by the time I was done i was lean without being massive and I had a chiseled chest and abs. I felt so good, I decided hey lets get bigger, so I bulked. I bulked for 2 months which as anyone who is natural knows, will not really yield much in the way of gains but my abs lost their visibility, my serratus was still visible, my pecs were still chiseled but my abs becoming even the slightest but fuzzy made me switch to an insta cut. I have been lifting for 3 years now and have just finished my first real bulk. I bulked for 7 months and in that time I got so much stronger, so much better, my mood improved but I couldn't take my shirt off, I would shower and run past the mirror, I would get ready in the morning before going to wash my face and brush my teeth so that I didn't have to look at my body in the mirror. I couldn't even take shirtless pictures for my trainer so I had to face time him and close my eyes when I took my top off and then turn away from the mirror to put my clothes back on. I eventually caught a glimpse of myself in a mirror when I went to see what the bruises were like from some cupping treatment I had self-administered (I am a physio) and I felt sick and depressed despite knowing full well I wasn't fat, I was so much stronger, the bulk inevitably came with fat. So I looked bigger, you could tell I had a lot of muscle but not much definition, I didn't have a belly, but it was flat, no abs in sight. I started a cut recently and I am getting my definition back which makes me happy but as a result I am losing small increments of my strength which makes me feel almost as shitty as losing definition, its a vicious game man

Some polytheistic cultures similar to the Greeks and Romans would try to emulate gods or legendary heroes, or even athletes of their time like some who tried to get physiques like the gladiators and countless people tried to emulate their cultures greatest warriors. I find these transformations particularly awful when they're just for normal guy roles. For example, while I personally disagree with actors having to change their bodies to get a certain role, Chris Evans transforming for Captain America at least made sense in the context of the story (CA's body was literally enhanced by science), but when actors look like *that* and their role is just love interest, or boss, or teacher etc. it just does not make sense to me. Of course I'm not advocating for actors changing their body for every single role, as extreme fluctuations in weight can have terrible long-term consequences, but rather pointing out what a ridiculous standard that creates. Take the Riverdale cast for example, my mans Archie literally looks like a bar of chocolate and yet is supposed to be just some average, small-town 18yr old. I think we underestimate the impact media can have on us, bc while rationally we may be able to understand that that character is an actor who has masses of resources available to them to create the 'perfect' body, their standard still burrows its way deep into our psyche and is very hard to remove.

Preach. It’s definitely easier for men simply due to genetics but in any case, if you gain muscle too quickly, your bones and joints can’t keep up. Body image issues are extremely prevalent among young men as well, but very few are talking about it. Instead society is perpetuating it, especially some folks in the fitness industry. Sometimes it's just depressing seeing young people in the gym work their ass off for months and then quitting overnight when they don't immediately turn into The Rock. I can confirm that it takes years to naturally build a muscular physique. In 2014, I decided I wanted to look like Captain America (ironic, I know) and set out to go from fat to muscular. This involved nearly a 1-year journey of losing 112 lbs through a complete reeducation about my relationship with food, nutrition, and excessive cardio. Then, when I had twenty pounds of fat left, I began building muscle. I was a gym rat for years, maybe 7 or so. I'd be in there for 2 forty-five minute intervals a day, more if my home life was turbulent. I had it all, I nailed down the diet, I was doing the exercises the stars did but was still lanky AF. And, it's only now, in 2020/21 during quarantine of all things when things have started paying off. I went from a medium to a 2XL and the secret was not killing myself in the gym every damn day, trading it for sleep and the right foods. Once I dialled everything in, it just worked. It brings me back to a Terry Crewes interview where the interviewer asked what it takes to get a Terry Crewes body, to which Crewes replied, "Get a doctorate, it's the same thing."

@Some Weeb Not really. The female ideal is 5 to 6 sizes lower than the average real woman's shape in most countries. And I disagree with Lucia Elizalde in regards of the formulation on ED's (altho I doubt it was on purpose), since there is a big taboo about ED's and men leading to misfinformation. What I agree on is: let's not compare trauma. Both men and women are beset by beauty standards that are unrealistic. Where the women have it "better" is in terms of awareness regarding those issues, as the video maker pointed out in the sixth part of the video. It's a good start, but not a solution in and of itself. A lot of work needs to be done on all fronts.

Great points in the video talking about where an actor started and how fast they got "jacked". It was touched on, but the studio have a vested interest in these actors looking as good as they can for their given roles. The studios hire trainers and nutritionists to help them. Many studios will hire "companions" as well to be with the actor to make sure they don't cheat or do something that will make them backslide. Studios have done that for years for actors who have drug and alcohol problems to make sure they don't go on a bender and mess up the filming schedule. Robert Downey Jr comes to mind. His companion made sure he stayed away from anything that would take away from his performance. I'm sure the studio also pays for "high colonics", massage and anything else the actor needs.

When we discuss unrealistic body expectations, it is not just in reference to the bodies themselves. I like how you went beyond the typical "is so and so on roids" most people go with and you actually addressed the core issue and I think the human impact. To share a personal example I've had some degree of a 6 pack ever since I was in middle school and I used to have insane diets and work our for literally hours a day, I was never satisfied unless I had basically none% body fat and could deadlift a midsized bear. I felt a tremendous amount of pressure to maintain that body and that physic which ultimately was only achieve through a fairly unhealthy life style, Eating 7,000 calories a day and working out from 3:30-10:00/11:00 during high school. I know this is an extreme example but I really felt this pressure and expectation to maintain that kind of super hero body in order to keep the kind of attention I got from girl and even my friends, but it also revealed just how little boundaries there are for mens bodies, I was constantly having my muscles groped or my shirt lifted up and touched by girls I didn't even know. I liked girls finding me attractive but I also felt violated, self conscious and constantly felt like my worth was being strongly tied to my physic and consequently my self-esteem was significantly dependent on my bodies condition. I've known a fair number of female models who have all told me about some struggle with and ED or body dysmorphia and the horrifying realities of that industry, and it's something that really needs to change and needs to be addressed, but it is seldom you will hear the same things from guys, not because they don't still happen or aren't as serious but because it really feels as though as man you can't. It becomes un-masculine to admit to struggling with body image issues or ED's. That's why I wanted to share my unsolicited experience here, I think It's important for us as men to understand we can talk about these things and challenge these expectations. also fun fact after all that insane stuff I used to do the best shape I've ever been in was when I was working out only 30 minutes to an hour each day and just eating really clean good food, a lot of food still and I was working on a farm at the time but still, it goes to show that consistency and proper rest can be more beneficial that absolutely destroying your self every day. there were still unhealthy things I did during that time but over all I just urge people to focus more on taking care of their health before they focus on how their body looks.

And male body dysmorphia is almost completely ignored in the public eye simply because we're men. I grew up watching wrestling in the 80s and 90s and reading comic books. I'm never, ever going to shake the feeling that I am inferior, no matter how I look.

Don't think that you'll never gonna get over it. Thinking that you are capable of overcoming it is a big part on actually doing it! Not matter how you look like, you are valuable. I wish you the best.

Hey, thanks for the male body positivity. Despite kind words from even my significant other, I feel really pressured to be a huge monster man. Knowing that a lot of people take drugs for everything, including anti-inflammation reasons, made me really take a step back and analyze what I was idolizing. I don't feel as insecure anymore. I don't need to look like Arnold. It also really made me take a different stance on Pattinson's words. Maybe he was right

I realise it looks framed like it’s an altruistic act that champions men everywhere but unfortunately….. Pattinson’s full of s**t. It’s just more of the same. He took the money, worked out, but wants to cover his arse for if/when he doesn’t look as good on camera as he did in his early 20s when teenage girls had involuntary vaginal conniptions over his abs. Don’t believe me? Ok. Scarlett Johansen is doing the same thing. She’s getting older and now wants to pretend she had a huge problem playing sexy and provocative characters throughout her rise to stardom. It’s utter horse s**t that we’re being sold.

@@CursedWheelieBin even if those are their motivations, it doesn't mean their stances in these situations are wrong - it's still better to perpetuate the things less rather than more wherever possible, even if it's not the most significant thing

No. You should be as strong as you can be. Lift weights, run sprints, don't accept mediocrity.

I feel like being the best version of your partner’s fantasy is the only goal that really matters lol And 99% of the time they’re happy with way smaller than Arnold
