I’ve been editing video for over 20 years. I decided to give it a try to edit a pretty simple project (single camera, two audio sources, a few video files). I felt like it was actively fighting me the entire time. I spent several hours working until I reached the point that I was visibly angry. Downloaded DaVinci Resolve for iPad, was finished in ~40 minutes-no issues.

I do flying filming (you can check my channel for examples). I'm definitely not a professional, more like a private pilot, enjoying flying, and willing to keep memories of my flight in a vlog style editing. And all of this is done on the same iPad mini 5 I use for flying, using Luma Fusion. That editing tool came out well before davinci or Final Cut, and the UI shows this a lot. It's just working perfectly. The impressing thing is, I can edit up to 6 4K60 videos on that mini with the A12 chip, really surprised ! They are some issues with the app though : it has some crashes, adding complex LUT can sometimes be a bit to much on 4K60 video, there is no keyframe easying (but key frame exist of course), and speed ramping is also missing. All of this is not something I use, but seems to be missing for a lot of people. I'm missing more something like following an object or a face. But for the rest, LumaFusion is really really a very capable but style lightweight app. (LTT did an editing on that app once for there video, it's how I discovered the app).

I feel like Apple has been constantly trying to reinvent the video editing wheel with their newer Final Cut versions, ever back since the first FCPX. Meanwhile, other players like DaVinci Resolve are trying to do it in a way that makes sense to people who have already edited video without being too different or distracting.

For real. File management, working with multiple windows/apps, it’s way too cumbersome on iPad OS still. Logic Pro on the iPad Pro is in a similarly awkward, if not more awkward position because of how good Garage Band on iOS is. Feasibly, you're only going to use either for writing, arranging, outlining, or other initial steps in the workflow of creating a song. Not supporting VSTs or Plugins outside of what you can get in the correct format on the app store is a severe hinderance that is going to keep it from being the platform of choice for mixing or mastering (even for people who work entirely in the box), and may be a non starter for even the writing/arranging portion if their instruments of choice aren't available (amp sims, synths, EZ/Superior Drummer).

Honestly at this point the iPad Pros should have the ability to dualboot macOS. I know how you said it shouldn’t and did an entire vid about why but it’s clear the limited UI and functionality of iPadOS is a problem. Apple ain’t gonna fix it since every iPadOS update is just sloppy seconds of the previous iOS version, so might as well let us dualboot macOS so we can do more with our higher end iPads. You can do so much more on a Mac that is as fast as the iPad Pro, and cheaper than it

For fun, I decided to bring my iPad 12.9" Pro M1 to use on some recent Thailand travels. I made sure to have the most updated version of Lightroom on there and thought I was good to go. Spoiler alert, the worlflow was a NIGHTMARE. You can't sort the photos by the top rated so you can easily sort which ones you want to modify. Then, you can't select multiple edited photos to export at one time but have to export individually. Then, if you save them to Photos which is the only place that the iPad Facebook app (which has NEVER been updated) requires them to be for upload, it saves the modified photos next to the originals by time. So, you have to figure out which ones you modified while uploading to FB based on a 1" thumbnail. Then, I pulled open DaVinci resolve to edit my video... let's just say I just decided to wait until I got home. Now, I leave the iPad at home.

I usually select my photos to be imported and edited into an album I export the whole thing by doing highlight and drag, it’s an iOS gesture you may not be familiar with? but I’ve also been able to export by clicking one by one. I do a share and export as dialogue to bring it into an album in photos app. The photos app never sees the raw it goes straight to creative cloud. As a video editor, I'm sorta skeptical that touchscreens are actually beneficial for editing workflows. I feel like mouse-keyboard is the most-efficient input device. If you're doing one specific task over and over that benefits from an input device (trackballs and color correction come to mind), maybe, but I feel like most video editing benefits from the broadly-useful mouse/kb, and your given task changes so often that switching between it and a touchscreen/stylus and some sorta editing rig ends up losing more time than it saves. Shame, cuz I have an M2 iPad Pro with the pencil, and there's no reason for there not to be a fully-featured version of Premiere Pro on there.

Apple expects you and everyone to be working in an fully Apple ecosystem. If you do that, it “just works”. But if you’re not recording in ProRes, and using only Apple software and hardware… I swear they go out of their way to make it harder to work in a mixed environment.

They were in a fully Apple ecosystem and yet the app didn't work for a complex project. It has nothing to do with the hardware, it's the way they made the app for iPad and who they thought it's the target user.

That's the Apple logic for most of their stuff. You still can't update airpods without an Apple device. The classic Apple "We know you like our stuff, but you don't like enough of our stuff so you get an inferior experience". But hey, if you make an appointment with an Apple store you can go in to get them updated.

Enjoyed the storytelling, top notch as always. I was one of the first adopters to go fully without a laptop around 2012 with the iPad 2. Sad to see that the issues present over 10 years ago are still here - such as problematic file management, small actions missing, interface problems etc. Back then it was just an iPad and I decided that the product has limited use. Flash forward 10 years, we have these Pro models, but in name only. I dont understand why someone would limit themselves to this type of experience, when you have the MacBook Air/Pro models from today who weight negligibly more and are perfect for pro work...

I felt his pain throughout this video and I don't do video editing. I see tablets having unique capabilities for things like this because of the pen and touch interface. Honestly, I feel like they will get there, some day, but I almost feel if there was a company majorly supporting Android tablets, Dex on Samsung would have probably handled this better. I know there is some pro apps coming on Android tablets or have come recently, but I don't know how they perform or their parity to their desktop counterparts or even iPad. Sadly iPad will always be first class and Android second class to tablet apps, so unless that were to change suddenly, it will likely be that the iPad apps will get there for making videos like this without issue.... sooner than Android ever could hope to.

its not second class if your app on ipad is half baked. I mean. you have davinci resolve, final cut pro on ipad, m1 processor, but like on this video, the app is useless. and you can do better with capcut. I will not falling for apple cheap trap anymore. iphone 15 will overheat after 15 minute of high usage use and slow down hard. geekbench is better than android. but worse when you use it daily.

IMO FCP on the iPad is targeted at "prosumers," people who've outgrown iMovie but don't need all of the stuff of FCP on the Mac. I played around with it a bit, and it's not bad for on-the-fly edits say if you need multicam support, but my workflow is still more efficient on my Mac.

Apple's definition of "prosumers" doesnt mean "Professional Consumers" though, in Apple-speak it translates to "Consumers with larger wallets". Which is a major issue for Apple's "Pro" marketing.

I can match the same sentiment of almost all these comments. I went out of my way to buy a 2TB ipad pro (because you cant edit from external drives) specifically because i built this up in my head so much. Needless to say i ended up returning the ipad before the 14 day window closed and i dont feel bad about it. I have no idea what they were thinking. This would be acceptible for a beta but not release its missing absolutely everything to essentially complete X task but you just keep feeding it time and energy with work arounds giving it the benefit of the doubt until finally you give up and go back to your mac and it just works. This is EXACTLY the same as using ipad os vs mac os!

Apples' Pro suite apps are good.... until you want to push it further. For example, editing on Davinci Resolve is far better and intuitive than Final Cut Pro. I am really grateful for this video being released. I remember a few years back when the Ipad pro was first released and Jonathan Morrison made a really dangerous video selling the idea that one can edit professional videos on their iPad. Many of my college friends ditched their laptops for an iPad, but about a month later silently bought and used laptops again for editing. I'm very concerned with other "Apple-centric" KZbinrs whom without thought, sell ideas that iPhones and iPads can do ALL of your professional work (spoiler it won't) and replace computers (Apple does this too btw). They make their viewers and supporters make bad purchasing decisions and those channels have zero accountability for it when the viewers lose money. Great video as usual Mac Address, the IPad is a good powerful tablet, but at the moment still has its limitations in fully replacing a traditional computer for professional work.

I’ve always seen the iPad versions as a stepping stone. I like to have an editor review the dailies on set, just how I work, and the iPad is the easiest form factor to achieve that. Would I edit a full project on it now, absolutely not. But in the future maybe, they just need to optimise the hell out of Final Cut Pro and DaVinci on the iPad.

ive said it before, ill say it again - the next big thing now that both ipads and macs have ARM processors is a 2-in-1 whereby when you flip to tablet mode it switches to iOS and flip back to laptop mode (with a touchscreen, so very courage) its running macos again. They ABSOLUTELY CAN do that RIGHT NOW and could easily charge the price of a used honda for it. too courage one must assume. Til then ill continue to use my dell 7390 hackintosh WITH touchscreen and ventura and stylus.....and power adapterrrr

Are there no drawing tablets at LTT? Because the things that Mark was initially optimistic about getting from working off of an ipad instead of his computer are things that computers can already do. Get Mark a Wacom or Huion or whatever other drawing tablet so that he can use stylus input with the actually functional version of Final Cut.
@minecraftWithDanielD
@minecraftWithDanielD Жыл бұрын
LTT doesn’t like buying products unless they can see an immediate profit from review, or it’s something their team “actually needs”. It’s likely that whoever is in charge of getting that equipment to employees would not see it as viable for the editing team, or something like that. I mean correct mean if I’m wrong, but didnt Taren have to bring in most of the stuff he used, or borrow old review stock?
@xelaander8429
@xelaander8429 Жыл бұрын
@@minecraftWithDanielD editors DON'T NEEDA drawing tablets, and if you work on a Mac and use any of the NLEs like premiere or final cut or resolve, touch input doesn't exist cos MacOS doesn't support it. On windows there's a ton of options from the Microsoft surface to HP/Dell/Lenovo AIOs with corresponding pen support so this is not on LTT, a Mac based editor might need DACs,, custom keyboards and maybe a DaVinci console for color grading but not a tablet, not if you're an editor
@SaveMeAzathoth
@SaveMeAzathoth Жыл бұрын
@@xelaander8429 It’s not like drawing tablets are only functional in specific applications. They function OS-wide as a full replacement for mouse/trackpad in MacOS. On MacOS pen input is better supported than the Apple Pencil is on an iPad, since the Apple Pencil isn’t allowed to fully replace fingers.

@@xelaander8429 Everyone has their own workflows. But in saying that, you really think LMG is gonna give their editors, who have a short turn around time (or at least they did, I suspect they still do) a laptop to work off of? For investigative videos maybe, but why limit yourself in terms of performance? Then again, it’s kinda hard to take LMG seriously with a lot of the weird shit they do

I think that Final Cut on the iPad is more similar to iMovie on the iPad than it is to Final Cut on the Mac. In the way Final Cut is an upgraded iMovie, Final Cut for iPad is an upgrade iMovie for iPad. For example the iOS version of iMovie has the media browser on the right side just like Final Cut on the iPad while iMovie on Mac has it on the left like Final Cut on Mac along with being able to transfer to the Mac version of the app but not being able to transfer back. So I think that the ideal use case for Final Cut on the iPad is for someone who was already using iMovie on their iPad and needed something more capable but did not have or want a Mac or didn’t want to pay for Final Cut on Mac.

About 10 years ago I would've said, hands down, that I would never do any editing on a tablet platform primarily because of 2 things, the size of tablets back then and the storage capacity. However, since then, things have changed as has my prejudice towards them. However, given the choice, I would still do editing of any kind on a PC and the choice is quite apparent to most. However, with the bigger sizes of tablets now on sale and the increase in their capabilities, I could see myself using them in the not-too-distant future. As for now, it's the platforms limitations that keep me going back to the PC versions of the software.

my one criticism is that this is more a review of FC pro for ipad, rather than what the ipad can do. it might be pedantic but choosing software which runs with fewer issues or workarounds would be a more fair test of what the hardware can do, rather than running into constant FC software restrictions/problems.
Stop saying the iPad needs MacOS!
