MacBook Air Early 2020 (A2179) Speaker Replacement Guide

Guide to replacing the speakers on the MacBook Air 13" Early 2020 A2179 model. The system in this video had developed an audible crackle due to a blown speaker.
The process for late-2020 MacBook Air M1 systems is very similar, however the speaker units are slightly different.
This is a surprisingly simple task, needing just a 1.2mm Pentalobe Screwdriver, a T4 Torx Screwdriver and a plastic pry tool.

I have a macbook air a2179 which was water damaged on the audio board area. I replaced the audio board, but the speakers does not work however it works fine with a headphone. In the system settings, It seems that the system does recognize the macbook internal speakers and when I increase or decrease the volume everything seems normal but no sound from the speakers. I updated the system, I tried doing PRAM but I was not successful (Although I am not sure if I did it correctly or not). I am not sure if this is related to or not, but there is a tiny led on the logic board beside the button for discharging current which is always on. Another point is that if we suppose that the right speaker which is connected to the audio board is water damaged, then why should not the right speaker work?! I am not sure what is happening but I think something is avoiding the speakers to work.

Is very similar on the M1, but the speakers are a different part so aren't interchangeable.

You might want to check its actually the speaker - they have a bit of an issue where at certain frequencies the speaker vibrates some keys in the keyboard and makes it sound like they've blown.

@@BrueComputing Is there a way to check? I've had it for a couple of years and now there's buzzing coming from my right speaker that was never there before. I want to say it is a blown speaker.

@@mytrung same its been just a month since I bought MBA M1 and the right side speaker is buzzing like hell, I think its a mass problem, thousands of people are having the same problem. have you found any solution?, I don't want to give it to the service center because in my country apple's service is pretty bad so not a good tradeoff to open MacBook just for speakers. do reply what's the situation of your MacBook currently.

I briefly vacuumed my speaker grill on the M1 MacBook. The vacuum is a cordless one that’s known to be somewhat decent at sucking (haha). The nozzle is thin but curved up at the sides so as not to create a perfect vacuum but I still felt it tug a little bit towards the laptop surface. In your experience, how likely is it that I displaced the speaker membrane? Paranoid I’ve damaged it after reading I shouldn’t have done that! Are the membranes in the M1 pretty secure?

It may not be the speaker, but rather the keys above it are rattling.

@gta4carnage i got it changed. the problem was in the speaker itself. they changed both of the speakers because apparently MacBook speaker replacements only comes in combo.

@gta4carnage my MBA m1 was just one month old, so yes. but they will diagnose first, if water caused the damage warranty will be avoided.
