Wow somebody who actually talks about Mace in an unbiased way. I think I'll subscribe just for that. Ever since lot of EU stuff has gone into legends, I personally feel alot of people forget the depth and complexity of these characters due to the retcons and characterization of stuff like Filoni's Clonewars, rebels etc. I'll admit Im a Legends lover and seeing this analysis honestly is perfect as opposed to how it seems alot of the jedi are villainized in Canon. Good work referencing shatterpoint as well.

Absolutely. Disney have made a very deliberate choice to villainise the Jedi whenever possible, and try to make the Sith sympathetic. Warped company with warped values.

Disney didn't villainise the Jedi anymore than Legends did. In the Legends ROTS novel the Jedi Council actively ploy to destroy Anakin's relationship with Palaptine simply because they do not like it. While in the movie, the scenes merely show them being suspicious of palaptine. Lucas also personally approved of everything in the novel himself.

@@thereformist8718 They don't like it due to the fact that it's very bad for jedi to favor senators and politicians and there concerns were right. Anakin was manipulated through his relationship with palpatine. They were right to not approve of palpatine and Anakin's relationship and it shows. Lucas did approve of the legends novels but there are many cases in which he himself did not fully agree with the author's decisions.

I think this could be an interesting question for a video. What was Mace's plan after executing Palpatine? I don't think the republic would have just accepted "oh he was a sith" especially when the only evidence was his confession to a member of the order that killed him.

I don't know the evidence the Jedi had, but they knew a Sith lord was controlling the war from both sides at that point. If they could pinpoint Palpatine as that Sith lord, they probably could have made a case that Palpatine orchestrated this war and played on both sides in order to garner power, and there's certainly plenty of reasons to suspect such given he stayed as chancellor long after his term was over.

In the novelization, right after Anakin tells him, he reports to Yoda over hologram and they agree to do whatever they have to. So I interpret that as Grandmaster Yoda giving him permission to kill Palpatine. 🤔

The question asked what Mace’s plan was after killing Palpatine. Yoda was the Grandmaster of the Jedi Order, meaning he was in charge of all Jedi. So it’s plausible that Yoda would handle everything after Palpatine was dead 👍

Mace’s plan might have simply been “Get rid of the Sith Lord. Deal with the rest later after the Sith Lord is gone.” Mace might have even thought that he would turn himself in immediately after (for the good of the Republic and the Jedi Order). It wouldn’t be the first time the Jedi Order turned in one of their own after a crime was committed (Ashoka, and then Barriss). I say this not having read the novelization. Maybe his plans for after are already in the novelization (or in another book).

Mace's primary concern was getting rid of the Sith Lord asap, any costs that come afterwards would've been acceptable. So he probably would've just turned himself in, gone on trial and explained exactly why he killed Palpatine. If he went to jail or was sentenced to death, so be it. He would see it as worth it considering how many lives he would've saved in the long term by stopping Sidious.

@@olorinmartinezI don’t think yoda would’ve risked mace’s life the way Mace risked his own life. I know it was a brand new and fresh accusation that sidious was the dark lord of the sith, but the more Jedi masters you send at him the better opportunity they have at actually defeating him going in with what 5 guys, just is not enough. Mind you sidious was likely VERY trained at taking on multiple combatants at once, he basically toyed with the masters that did come after him besides mace who actually gave him a fight. And even then look at the way yoda handled his fight with sidious, he was absolutely overwhelmed, even if mace and yoda were there together they still likely would’ve been overwhelmed and unable to defeat him. The best and only way to stop sidious and the rise of the empire is to spread out as much as possible. Every man for themselves tactics is the only reason some of the Jedi even survived, gave them enough time to figure out force ghosting and the ability to come back to train the next generation like they did with Luke.

Windu's undoing was not realizing how confused and close to the precipice Anakin was thanks to his fear of loosing Padme. Had Windu sensed this danger, he could have promised Anakin Masterhood after he returned and asked Anakin to go to Kashyyk and bring back Yoda. This would gave removed much of Anakins fear while also moving him far from the impending fight. Windu's failure in this moment is what really doomed the Old Jedi Order. Ironic that Windu couldn't sense his own shatterpoint.

Windu had come closer to realizing the danger against the jedi sooner then any other Jedi. However, at this point the Jedi were doomed already even if he did kill Sidious. Whether he did execute or arrest him they would have the senate turn on them, and if he brought Anakin he would have still turned and helped Sidious for Padmes sake. Not even Mace; the second most powerful Jedi of all time, could have stopped this ending.

Mace Windus arrogance destroyed the jedi order. Powerful he was, but thought he could end the war, he was too wrapped up in the politics, he should have waited for Yoda and not attacked palpatine before they gathered the council

This passage proves even further that Mace Windu was more of an Antagonist than a Protagonist. He and Yoda were the main reasons why the Jedi had to fall for a new Jedi Academy to be constructed under Luke.

I agree with you on Mace but not on Yoda. Yoda was arrogant but there are hints in the Clone Wars that Yoda had an idea of what was coming but let it happen because it was the will of the Force. I sometimes think it was a bit like Doctor Strange in Avengers when he saw only one way to defeat Thanos. (the Dark Side in Yoda's case.) Mace though? I'd say next to Palpatine, Mace is probably the biggest external influence that pushed Anakin to the dark side. Imagine how different things might have been if Mace had only trusted Anakin and treated him with anything other than barely disguised contempt. Even taking him to confront Palpatine probably would have ended differently as Anakin would have instinctively fought back when Palpatine attacked and potentially ended the fight much sooner with the death of Palpatine.
