Machinist Tilting Drop-Down Drawer Tool Chest Made From Scrap

This machinist tool chest was designed to be mounted at eye level above my lathe, so I wanted something where the drawers would tilt and drop down without coming out. It's all made out of an old pine chest of drawers.

The demonstration of how the drawers worked was key to explaining all the weird cuts and shapes. Really explained it well. Pictures are worth a thousands words, but a video is worth thousands of pictures.

I spent a couple of days trying to work out how the tilt would work, coming up with all sorts of wierd ideas that didn't work. I spat coffee everywhere when that demo section of the video played - so wonderfully simple yet efficient.

Dragging that chest along the floor, i thought, "he should put some wheels on that", Then I paused the video to take a closer look and changed my mind. A "sledgehammer would be ideal !" I did not expect what happened next. The whole thing fell apart. What a great piece of theatre, how you arranged for the whole thing to fall apart on the tiny tap of a hammer beats me. Great video. Once again you are living up to your channel name, you are truly Epic. I love it.

this is exactly how i woodwork awesome. I find an old dresser someone else sees trash but i see oak! or a dinner table even better alot of cherry and maple from them, people throw them out like crazy and easier to pick up and get around then dressers lol

Great build. I want to put pull-out/tilt down drawers in the bottom of my kitchen cabinets for spices, knives, and other culinary implements. If room allows, I may dedicate one drawer to basic hand tools to cut down on the trips to the basement every time I need a screwdriver, pliers, etc.

Thanks fo video. Such a chest will be excellent for my wife's carving knives. The explanatory segment at 12'45" prompts me to make those pieces and use them as templates for the drawer sides and the carcass glides.

This will be excellent for carving knives. I can suggest a possible improvement. When I made heayduty drawers for a big tool chest, I cut the slides as french cleats. This method keeps drawers from cocking and jamming, and actually keeps the walls of the carcass from bowing too. Oak makes a durable slide and when waxed the drawers slide easily.

Thousands upon thousands of these pine wood cupboards and bookshelves were sold in the 80ties and 90ties. Today they are filling the dumps, because fashion has changed. It's great to see at least a few being used for something good. And as always, your wood working skills are beyond and above anyone else...

Some people would put dovetails in this whole drawer just to show up, but at the end of the day those nails did the same job. People often forget that being a pro is not just knowing the techniques, but when to use them. Very enjoyable video, as always.

I like the tilt-down feature, it makes drawers placed at this height useful. A nice way to keep the lathe accessories clean, organized, and easy to reach. Savage choice of color! although Grizzly green would have tied it together nicely.
