Just got flashbacks to when a friend asked me to pop over to help him get his workbenches new top on. When I got there I was a little confused to find 2 of his other mates already there. It turned out the new bench top was made by gluing hundreds of 6" lengths of pallet wood together so the wood grain went vertically. Don't know why that grain orientation was important, I just know it was over 3 meters long, over a meter wide, and weighed well in excess of 200kg. It took all 4 of us because we needed to get it from where he'd assembled it in his garage, down his garden, up 3 steps and into his workshop through a standard sized door. Humphing that thing into place nearly bloody killed us all ! :D

@@EpicUpCycling I don't know about incredible, but I do find it slightly odd to see how a hammer bounces on it, like if you were tapping an anvil. I also have a very clear memory of telling him at the time that if he ever moved I'd only help him get the thing back out if it meant I got to use my chainsaw. :) The frame it's on weighs more than the top though. If I remember correctly, it's got 8 uprights that may have been made from new railway sleepers (They have to be getting on for those kind of dimensions), but luckily he built all that in situe without help. One end of the top has now been routered down by an inch so he could let in a 36x36x1" slab of pig iron as a place for when he needs to do "Serious hammering on stuff". Considering the total mass of the bench before hand, I think, as a percentage of the original weight, the extra mass this added would be akin to if I PAINTED my flimsy little workbench !!! :D On the other hand, 20odd years on, apart from some oil stains, paint splatters, and a handful of saw/router gouges in it, his bench top is still perfectly acceptable. In that same time I've had to replace more than a few 1" plywood tops on my benches.

I have made a wheel barrow planter, not exactly a Victorian display cabinet or a dream bench. 😂 perhaps if I keep watching I'll strike out and build something bigger. With your work, you have brought back so many wonderful childhood memories. Like yourself, my grandfather was a very crafty man, he built his own workbench, and when he moved his worship to a larger space, I helped him to disassemble the mammoth thing and re-assemble back all again. It took us about 3 days to do the job, and it was hard (especially when I was only about 13 years of age), but in the process, I learned so much about wood, design, construction, tenacity, and self-pride. How proud you must be to have made your own furniture. I envy you. A great pleasure to watch you work. Thank you for the opportunity. Cheers

If it's a hollow core door (very light) just don't use it for the top top. However, it would make a surprisingly strong and straight base for a solid-core door or solid wood slat top.

I've looked several videos and I'm amazed what can be created out of "waste wood". I only can guess how much time you spent on planing this whole detailed furniture. Did you ever take wrong mesurements or cut the the wood the wrong way? In your videos all things look so perfect an nead. I Love your videos. It's very inspiring.

I don't do a lot of planning, I make most of the projects up as I go along. This does mean a few mistakes happen, but it means I can adapt the build to suit what materials I've got available :)

An excellent project. A lot of care and effort here in giving those bits and pieces a new life in your shop. One suggestion: find a decent used or new circular saw to use in place of that jig saw for long cuts. You’ll find it is quicker and with the use of a guide, much more accurate. I really liked the reuse of those bottle caps. A cool look.
