Spent 9 years trying to figure out what medications work for me...was not a happy experience, to say the least. This song and particularly Leon Bridges chorus hits me where it hurts..."Doctor please...give me a dose of the American Dream"...all that hassle just so we, the mentally ill, can feel normal to achieve this so called 'American Dream'. The desire to be 'normal'. To smile when we're supposed to and not just do it but feel that smile. To get out of bed...to talk to another without feeling your heart pulsate like no tomorrow...what a life man...what a life it is to be neurodivergent. :)

@@bartholomewmiller it's anti consumerism and pro individualism set to a quirky beat wit with comedic overtones. He mentions how his friend is tryna get girls by wearing flashy and expansive clothing only to realize there's 6 other people on the club with the same exact outfit on, while most clothing stores only stock clothing that are expansive and brand name that conform to modern tastes a thrift shop is where you will find unique items that might not be appreciated by the masses but made with care or just as good looking as the name brand stuff but lacks the name value so it's considered a lesser product which you could farther stretch the metaphor to apply to music in general the big clothing brands ie the record labels only produce products they have market tasted to appeal to specific demographics and have zero originality whereas the thrift shop ie independent artists are underappreciated but are unique and don't care about mass appeal only that they supply a product that you can't find anywhere else and has value to the right person. Another song on the album "Wing$" furthers this narrative but specifically with sneakers and how if you don't have the latest sneakers you are looked down by others and people would literally kill just to look good even though the sneakers are cheaply made and are derivative of sneakers that were released before

This song is incredibly powerful and NEEDS to be re-released. The truth in the story brings out real emotions for anyone who listens to it and watches it. Re-release it and use the opioid epidemic, the hundreds of thousands of deaths, the families losing their brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, aunties, uncles and friends. The addicts who feel there's no other way, they've lost themselves, but they can crawl out of it. We can't give up on addicts and our future addicts. If you could save only 10 people around the world, either give them something to live for or give them a reason to stay away from drugs, then this song, your music, your popularity, and your reach will all be worth it. I understand you are preparing for your tour, you may feel it's not the right time, but tell me, Ben, when will be the right time? Just don't forget about the power and reach you have now ❤️×

They talk of things that actually matter within society and are delivered in a way that isn't sugar coated, it's raw, it's painful, it's real! Moreover, it's made with the intention to rise above and stop all of these issues. Keep up the phenomenal work !!!!

this song is absolutely a masterpiece!! im 39 & bc of addictions, my life had bn ruined! but I found a truth & salvation in myself. that I knew I was better then how I was behaving & what I was becoming!!ah, what I was becoming!! ive bn clean almost 5yrs now. im not ashamed or shy to say so. they often say, "relapse is a part of recovery". I disagree!! if i go back to using, im dead!! jails, institutions & death...that's it, nothing else!! in 4yrs alone, I've lost more loved1z then I can count on both hands & feet!! unfortunately 3 of those people were the closest people to me. my best friend, Chuck, 6yrs ago. my hubby & daughters father, Shelton, 4yrs ago(knew him 23ys) & my sister/best friend for sure, Trinette, this March the 13th!! all to addiction & relapse!! so sum times u don't get another chance. there might not be another day or try. it just is GONE!! be kind, love & b happy!! life is here to b lived!! enjoy it but respect it

This hits hard man, I come back to this song when I’m craving real bad and it reminds me why I left that lifestyle and how far I have come since then, Heroin and Fentanyl ruined my life, I’m still attempting to pick up the pieces after two years of sobriety. It’s overwhelming, knowing I have so much to patch back together but I did this to myself, so it’s on me to rebuild my foundation. Life is only easy if you stay in your comfort zone, but you aren’t going to grow any. I become complacent, big headed almost. Thinking I’ve got this and that I’m invincible when I’m far from that. Just needed to rant I guess lol I fkn love Macklemore’s messaging, it always puts me in my feels.

To me, this song sounds better and you can feel it and understand better being played at .75 speed. I've been an alcoholic/addict since 2012 when I turned 16. And I've been in and out of treatment centers and have had multiple DUI's since then. I grew up around a whole addict family on both sides, and always knew I never wanted to be like any of them. But yet, I turned out to be the one thing that I never wanted to be. But after dealing with all the consequences of drinking and smoking, and never fully knowing it would turn out like it did, treatment and counseling has been the very best thing that has ever happened in my life period. If it weren't for me getting in trouble, I would've never gotten to the place where I am now and I'm forever grateful for that

[Intro] OK, OK Yeah We live tonight Check it, now [Verse 1: Macklemore] I seen pain, I felt the losses Attended funerals and seen coffins 21 years old, an angel was lost here Wings clipped by the grip of 80 milligram sniffs of oxycontin Everyday through the nostrils Never went away, never does it stop there Death a line or two away and a couple tall cans Cause you never know when God is gonna call, man Precious, what we all share I said peace at 5:30, the next time that I saw him was in the hands of the pallbearer What if I would've never gone and dropped him off there? Blaming myself, in hysterics, screaming "It's not fair!" 21 years old with a book of rhymes he was gonna recite to the globe Only thing to numb the pain besides that shit in his nose He was gonna quit tomorrow, we're all gonna quit tomorrow Just get us through the weekend, and then Monday follows Then it's Wednesday, then it's "fuck it, I'm already feeling hollow" Might as well go crack a seal and might as well go chug a bottle Might as well go pop a pill and go and band-aid that problem And escape this world, vacate this world Cause I hate myself No praying's gonna cure this pain [Hook: Leon Bridges] Doctor, please, give me a dose of the American Dream Put down the pen and look in my eyes We're in the waiting room and something ain't right All this is on you, we're over-prescribed [Verse 2: Macklemore] For me and Kev He went up in jail, institutions are dead And with our lives, we play Russian Roulette And try to find a life where we could be content Cause for us, we're just trying to minimize the fear of being alive And now my little brother is in the sky From a pill that a doctor prescribed That a drug-dealing billion dollar industry supplied And the cops never go and profile at night Yeah, the, the, the orange plastic with the white top they sell to you Has us looking for the answers and that instead of you Quick fix, whatever'll do We just gonna neglect the truth Because a doctor with a license played God and said it's cool Played God and said it's cool But me? I don't blame Kev or his mom freebasing while pregnant with him I blame the pharmacy companies And country that spends trillions fighting a war they supplying themselves Politicians and business and jail Public defenders and judges who fail Look at Kevin, look at Kevin Now he's wrapped in plastic First dealer was his mom's medicine cabinet Got anxiety, better go and give him a Xanax Focus, give him Adderall, sleep, give him Ambien 'Til he's walking 'round the city looking like a mannequin Ups and downs, shooting up prescriptions you're handing him So America, is it really worth it? Liam Nissan Nissan Sure, fuck addiction, but it isn't something you can just 'control'. Doctors are meant to treat wounds and stop pain. Not get you addicted to a drug, that's your own prerogative.
@teenecore8 жыл бұрын
@AtomicTurtleGames @Liam Nissan Nissan were not talking about penicillin dumb fucks... were talking about opiate and stimulant medications..... can you agree with that or are you both to ignorant to understand that. Also not all doctors just the ones out for their own paycheck no matter who they use and hurt...take it from someone who knows. One example is how they treat opiate addiction with an ever worse opiate methadone (regular opiate addiction lasts anywhere from 7-10 days while methadone lasts 30 plus days to recover from the addiction. The government wants people like that dead and poisoned)

Yo, for all you idiots out there (the ones in the comments), you obviously didn’t listen to the lyrics right. Macklemore isn’t trying to tell you that drugs are bad and that we shouldn’t take them, and that they are all evil and we should never take drugs. He is trying to help us as a people understand drug abuse through the eyes of a victim of drug abuse. I love this song. My father left my family because he was not strong enough to change his habits. I am fifteen years old, and I don’t even know if he is alive. My mother was put into the hospital because she went off her depression medication and wanted to kill herself. If it wasn’t for that medicine, she would be dead right now. So, what Macklemore is actually saying is that yes, some people need help just to function, because if we as humans could control ourselves and our thoughts, suicide would not exist. But people do abuse it because doctors over prescribe medicine to fill quotas or to get more money.

I know I keep commenting on this video, but it's touched me a lot. Among other issues touched on, I relate to it because I feel I was overmedicated as a child, with Ritalin, Prozac, etc., when I don't think there was ever anything actually "wrong" with me, except being bored in school, so I wasn't paying attention to "learning" things I'd known for years. I could read when I was 3 - I have no memory of learning to read; in my memory, I've always been able to read. Took a long time to get off of anti-depressants, not because I was ever depressed, but because of the discontinuation syndrome - took 3 doctors to find one who believed me and was willing to help. It took a while, but I'm off of (almost) everything, like that, now, and no, not depressed. I don't think I ever was, at that time, that I can remember. Only angry at the doctor who talked my mom into thinking there was something wrong with me, when I was just bored of hearing kids learning to read, when I already could, so my teacher said I wasn't paying attention. I was, I'd just already read ahead in all of the given material, so there was nothing left to do but listen and draw and look out the window. She didn't bother to ask if I was paying attention or learning anything, just armchair diagnosed me with ADD-inattentive (the phrase at the time) so the whole machine got a doctor to diagnose and medicate me, instead of offering more challenging assignments than learning to read "cat" and "dog" when I was already looking up words like "unnecessary" and "wary" on my own. I already knew how to read, and was learning how to teach myself more, but since I was bored stiff listening to the alphabet in 1st grade, I was "diagnosed" with something that had nothing to do with me, and a few years later, with being "depressed", when I just wasn't. I was a happy child, besides being dragged to that idiot doctor all the time. My other memories are all happy and fun, so I have no clue where he got that from. I look him up every few years (Dr. William Weathers, Greenville, SC - be wary, anyone considering taking your child to him - PLEASE DON'T), hoping he's finally dead, so he can stop mis-diagnosing and over-medicating normal children, but he's not, almost 30 years later. Still "practicing medicine." And of course, he doesn't have an email address so I can tell him how completely wrong he was, and about all the years of issues he caused me, trying to get off of his "medicine" I never needed or wanted in the first place. And, thanks to him, I find it hard to have any trust in any doctor, so I avoid them, when I'm getting to the age I should probably be seeking them out. The pharmaceutical industry is a terrible circle, in so many ways.

I've been a fan for Macklemore for a few years but no song of his had made me cry. Keep saying what needs to be said. You are changing the world little by little. Thank you, RIP to anyone who has lost their life due to opioids.

a lot of comments of lyrics are wrong for 1:51 It's "For me and Kev, you end up in jail, institutions or dead*" I am a recovering oxycontin addict. This is quoted quite a lot in AA/NA books that addicts that don't get sober either end up in jail, institutions or dead.

2:30 to 3:05 is one of the best things Macklemore has ever don't imo. the entire song is wonderful.

I suffer from anxiety with depression, OCD, bi polar disease, and a neck and back disease. I refuse to take any medications because I don't want to lose me. I know and understand that everything is only mind over matter, so the only thing that can truly help me is, well, me.

+The Attractive Vloggers That's it. The medicines dont solve the problem, they just cover it. I think a psycologe can help you, but yes, all of this is in our mind, we can control it. It is very difficult, and it cost a lot of time, bit I think you can made it

cameramangonzalo Thank You guys for agreeing! I'm not one to say anything about the government, but I'm not wanting to feel like a zombie.

+The Attractive Vloggers Preach it! I agree 100%. I, to have been dealing with anxiety and depression my whole life, and was forced to be put on medication because of my extreme panic attacks. I gained 60 pounds. It made me even more depressed because of the gained weight. I made my doctors take me off the medication, and have been improving on myself ever since. I have lost some of the weight, and have learned new ways to deal with panic attacks. Hopefully more people can understand that medicine will NOT solve their problems!

Eminem is homophobic. I hate him for that. Macklemore is not homophobic, so they wouldn't go together.

Macklemore deserves to still be huge. Him having a heart to kendy shouldnt have shocked anyone when he hit with songs like this, wings, otherside, ego, etc. Like, did anyone actually listen before judging & cancelling? 🤣

It's mad how stuff like this doesn't blow up as much as it should do because there has never been someone that explains it as clearly and straight to the point through a song
