Boy! Does this take me back to the '70s and all the fun I had macrame'ing jute plant hangers for friends and family (and throwing pots on a potter's wheel)!!! Had a smile on my face the whole time I watched the video. We didn't have the term "boho" in those days that I'm aware of, but I guess if the shoe fits now... Thanks so much for all the great memories! Can't wait to try to make a few coasters. This pattern is simple and beautiful! :-)

@@APrettyFix I was a junior and senior in high school when I did a lot of macrame'ing and clay work. Adding big wooden beads into the plant hangers while knotting them was a very common thing to do, and a lot of houseplants were must-haves in a home. Leather and bead necklaces, as well as puka shell necklaces, were all the rage also. High-waisted Ditto pants and cap sleeve t-shirts for girls was standard dress attire for school and everybody had long hair. Ahhh, those were the days! :-) Thanks again for the smiles!!!

This is great but I have an question what if this end knot opens
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix 3 жыл бұрын
I've had mine for a few years and it has yet to open, but I understand the concern: My suggestion is to add a dab of fabric glue on each knot using a brand called Aleene's. You can find Aleene's glue on Amazon. I use Aleene's Stop Fraying glue on some of my fibre art projects (on the knots or ends) and it works very well. Here is a link to a 3-pack containing 3 different varieties of Aleene's glue: amzn.to/3t9sI6M Hope this helps!

Thank you! Did some for my parents and they looked great!! BUT … she spilled her coffee on it and threw it in the wash and the first/last rows of knots started to come out! HELP!! What do I do to ensure the knots do not loosen??
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix Жыл бұрын
Oh no! Here are my thoughts: If you are going to throw them in the washing machine (instead of handwashing), then I would recommend one of two options: 1. Try using fabric glue on those last knots to prevent them from unraveling. Make sure to look for fabric glue that is safe, non-toxic and is machine-washable. For example, there is a glue called "Aleene's OK To Wash-It" glue that is safe to use on fabrics/fibers and is machine-washable. Aleene's is a well-known brand, but I'm sure there are plenty of others on the market. And just to be on the safe side, use the delicate cycle as well. 2. If you don't like the idea of using a machine-washable fabric glue, then you might want to consider tying each of the knots with a thin, thread to secure them. I hope one of these options works for you. Let me know how it turns out!

What is the actual size of the coaster once done
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix 2 жыл бұрын
It's about 4 inches by 4 inches (not including fringe).

If I use 3 mm would I need more than 10 cords? If so, how many cords?
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix 2 жыл бұрын
It often depends on how soft the cord is (and, therefore, how how much smaller the knots are), but in my estimation, I would add 1 more, at minimum, and 2 more at maximum.
@earthdweller222
@earthdweller222 2 жыл бұрын
@@APrettyFix Ok thanks! Do I need multiples of 2 or 4 because of the square knot? I guess I’ll know after doing two rows ☺️
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix 2 жыл бұрын
If you add 2 more cords (each folded in half and attached using the lark's head knot), you will have enough to create another square knot, so this should do the trick!

How would using 4mm cord affect the end result?
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix 4 жыл бұрын
There shouldn't be much of a difference. It often depends more on how soft and pliable the string or cord you buy. I recently purchased a 3mm macrame string (single twist) and it was slightly thicker than my 4mm single twist. The 3mm was very soft, so the single twisted strands were not tightly wound, making it expand it a bit. I liked the effect, but it was not what I had anticipated. The more you used macrame, the more you will become comfortable with these variations. Take care ❤️

Great video, thank you. Quick question, if you wanted to create these coasters using another fibre, how would you finish the ends without combing them as tassels?
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary-Ann, Depending on the fiber, I might a) use a horizontal half hitch knot along the top and along the bottom so that there is no fringe left (you'll need to look up that knot if you're not familiar with it) which means you'll need to cut each cord at least another foot or two longer so that you can have enough cord for that or b) snip the fringe as close to the final knots and then add dabs of hot or clear glue along the cut ends to prevent them from unraveling or c) weave the ends into the back of the coaster (but only if the fiber is thin and flexible enough). I've done that when creating woven coasters and it works quite well. Good luck!

4 feet long cords, seems like a bit much for a coaster. I realize they’re folded in half so that would be 2 foot length but that still seems too long. I wanted to try this but I don’t want to waste tons of cord do it so. How much was left over, as I couldn’t see that in the video
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix 2 жыл бұрын
If you are comfortable with macrame, then you could probably make these using 3 to 3.5 foot cords as some have suggested in the comments section :) I always err on the side of caution, but I completely understand your desire to save on that cord!

Why did mine fall apart. I did it exactly like this. The ends started falling out.
@APrettyFix
@APrettyFix 4 жыл бұрын
So sorry to hear that! Without being able to see exactly how you are creating your coasters, I'm going to offer a couple of suggestions here: 1. Make sure your square knots from start to finish are nice and tight. This will create a firm structure throughout. 2. Once you know that is the case, then you'll need to note that by their nature, square knots are open-ended (so to speak) and, in theory, could unravel. It's, therefore, important to leave at least an inch (and maybe more) of the fringe at the ends. The longer the fringe, the less worry there will be for unraveling. So this means not cutting the fringe too short. 3. If you have done all the above, then your best bet is to use a fabric glue (in fact, you might want to do this, regardless) on the last row of square knots (where the knot meets the fringe). Don't use Elmer's glue or anything that is water soluble. Make sure it's fabric glue like Aleene's brand fabric glue. I really hope this helps! Macrame takes time and patience with some failed starts, but I do hope you stick to it! Take care :) Jelica
