As an amateur photographer not even interested in video making I'm astonished by how much I enjoy all your videos. You go above and beyond what's necessary for a "product review" and it is in that excess that this channel creates something new. Every new video inspires me in a prodound way and leaves me speechless with the quality and beauty of the shots. I get new ideas and a different way of looking at things. All of this while adding very useful technical explanations. And it's free... Thank you for the great content and keep going.

Thanks … very glad you feel that way about our work. With every episode that contains a product review, we try to do something that has value totally besides that… for us creating it, and for you watching it. Edutainment if you want to call it that way. Always happy when people see the educational value in it.

My favorite channel tackles BOTH my favorite macro lenses AND MICRO LENSES? You sly bastard, Nicholas! Utterly magnifique. I never regret my Media Division membership, ever. Marie is both unidentifiable and positively gorgeous xD The big reveal was actually amazingly effective, even if I didn’t know ahead it was Marie. And dude! The level of that recreation is absolutely unreal, even while ball-parking it. My favorite thing is seeing where you chose to differ, and how fantastic the results were. The Donnie Darko voice “Come closer” KILLED ME too. AND DUDE. I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYONE CLEARLY DEMONSTRATE THE AUROGON RANGE specifically in the context of their normal macro lenses. Cannot tell you how many times I’ve tried to find that. Even Laowa’s own very excellent site doesn’t show them against their pre-existing macro line like this. Finally I can see how a 10X stacks against a regular 1:1 macro. I’ve owned Laowa’s 15mm f4 1:1 macro (their photography version, which I suppose now I ought to call the “liquid sword” in the spirit of the GZA) and that lens remains in the kit always, and the shift functionality always allowed for shots I couldn’t get elsewhere. Everyone on set who I show that to, not just camera team, but actors too, falls in love with it and its tiny size. So learning that they expanded and unified their photo macros into a full cine set (AND ADDED NEW FOCAL LENGTHS) was kind of a dream. I have been waiting for someone to do a terrific demo of this, and FUCK YES NO CHARTS. From the new set that 180mm absolutely astounds me, but all of them seem to match beautifully. I also am someone who believes true macro’s (with the insane level of detail and freedom of composition they provide) are amazingly underrated for portrait usage. The contax zeiss AEG 60mm 1:1 was another one I got turned onto after your Zeiss video, and that thing is a gorgeous portrait lens. In the Swords, I may spring for the 35 and the 180. I love how the 2:1 of their 100mm (an amazing now classic photography lens) functionally makes it feel like holding a virtual “200mm” lens, without having to change lenses in the bag again or use something crazy heavy. Laowa are my favorites of the new manufacturers because they’re true disruptors, targeting their niches carefully and precisely, before anyone else was doing it. Their pricing is never totally absurd, and their quality is always fantastic. There haven’t been any lenses yet I have not been able to cut them together with. And macros are their biggest original area of speciality. To have a full cine macro set with a comprehensive focal length set is fantastic. And another thing I want to highlight that I love here, the kind of thing that makes MD special- how you highlight the way things were done originally, and shout out the technicians who originally did them. I learned a lot of things about the Mindhunter intro I did not know about. And also, going back to the beginning and discussing To Kill a Mockingbird, its amazing to see the progression since then, and see the purity of that film’s usage of it. I always learn something here. And i never ever consider unsubscribing. Quality over quantity is the key to a large body of work, and over time, the tortoise wins the race. Just wanted to add to the conversation of cinema lenses with macro capabilities. I have a set of Zeiss Standard Speed MK2’s. I had Duclos modify the 3 wider lenses (16, 24, and 32) to have macro capability. They adjusted the hard stops on the focus ring, so when you hit minimum focus, the rings won’t stop, they will rotate for 3 more revolutions, making them macro. AC’s hate them because auto calibrating motors is a pain, and also after minimum focus the witness marks are useless. But I love the feature and use it all the time. Just wanted to make you aware of the ability to mod (at least some) lenses. Love the channel, thanks.
@MediaDivisionАй бұрын
Interesting... I am no lens designer, but I was told that the reason you can't do that with many lenses is the floating element. Your standard speeds seem to have no floating elements. Of course, with a lens not being optimised for short focus, the optical performance will drop after the hard stop - given the situation that might not matter much.
@b-camaks785Ай бұрын
@@MediaDivisionInteresting to hear about the floating element (or lack there of) being why this mod is possible. I wasn’t even aware it was an option until I brought my lenses in to be serviced. When I brought them in, they asked me if I would like the mod done. They said it was a feature a lot of people get done on their standard speeds, so I went ahead and had it done. Not sure what other lenses this would be possible for. Image quality does degrade when getting into the macro world, but it would also suffer if I were to use a diopter for the same effect, so it’s not really a net loss in the grand scheme of things.

I would love to see an episode on how different degrees and types of lens (non-) perfection affect storytelling. For example, many people say that they prefer vintage lenses to modern lenses, but does that affect how effectively the story is told, or how well the imagery in the story can be created? What if a scene were filmed on a modern lens, but then processed to look vintage. Would that be distinguishable from shooting on a vintage lens? Can you achieve the same storytelling quality using an inexpensive modern (or vintage) lens that you can with an expensive one? What truly contributes to the storytelling? What is just marketing? And what affects how the viewer actually feels about the resulting footage? With the introduction of far more affordable cinema glass, does it still make sense for a person, or even a studio, to shoot with much more expensive glass? In a related topic, many lines of cinema lenses have been introduced recently that are tailored for specific characteristics, such as having flaring, chromatic aberration, contrast, bokeh, and price point that are tuned either towards optical perfection, towards the look of a specific vintage lens, or towards some mix of characteristics that the lens manufacturers think that their customers want. How are these decisions made, and what processes and tools are used to develop lenses with exactly the desired set of optical characteristics?
@MediaDivisionАй бұрын
I don't think you could boil it down to a degree that it makes sense or has practical benefits for DoPs. I don't think it intrinsically changes the storytelling at all. If it well done, it very well could be indistinguishable, but that might not be the easiest way of doing it. Often, the change in the process itself is to affect the filmmaker rather than the audience. If you film something special with a special lens.... that should inspire you. In 999 out of 1000 cases the audience couldn't tell or give a f... Does it make sense to shoot with more expensive glass.... well, there are applications where squeezing quality might make sense, practical aspects might be impostant to safe time etc. But very honestly... the arri signature primes don't make sense in any context I can think of. 9999 out of 10000... you get the gist.

Brilliant video! I have been loving the Laowa lenses for macro filmmaking, and these new cine lenses look very interesting. I've also started shooting some wildlife footage with the auragon and getting some nice results of tiny springtails and mites (although the depth of field is shallow). Curious to know how you would approach filming with this auragon lens when it comes to trying to achieve more depth of field, definitely a challenge!
@MediaDivision26 күн бұрын
Thanks a lot man... appreciated. Yeah... narrow DoF is a problem for sure and talking about wildlife I don't have a good answer to it. Choice of subject seems to be key here. Focus stacking is another, but that only works with looping movements in a video context... very challenging. There are Nelsonian lenses that have a deeper DoF but at a hit to image quality.

Great video! Beautifully shot. Quick note though, Erik Messerschmidt was not the cinematographer on Mindhunter from the very beginning. The show initially had Christopher Probst as its cinematographer for the first two episodes of Season 1. I think Christopher as well deserved the credit. @MAandSАй бұрын
@MediaDivision ah that is a huge bummer but I understand. And yes that's exactly why. Because I felt it's aesthetically different from other super hero films. The Cinematography is very technically meticulous and purposful yet its dirty and otherworldly feeling. It's even inspired by Fincher films (someone you mention alot). Its not a perfect film but visually i found it superb.

@@MAandS I heard that many liked the cinematography… I saw clips, trailers… it wasn't that appealing to me to be honest. I think there is a lens that could be theoretically rigged to be a zero breathing macro. It's a photography lens so it would need rehousing but the micro nikkor 70-180mm f4.5-5.6 zoom macro. By partially linking the zoom and focus you could compensate for the breathing, you'd have to set the minimum aperture to f 5.6 to have a constant aperture. It would be a cool and tricky project.
@MediaDivisionАй бұрын
Thanks for the input… I think there might be good reasons why no optical designer pulled that off before… with this much compensation the image must suffer at any point. Still, interesting thought. Thank you for your support… we salute you!!
@necron1050Ай бұрын
@MediaDivision there is good reason, its extremely tricky. To my knowledge, it's the only full frame production zoom macro ever made, there is alot glass and four element groups that have to move independently. The image quality is pretty consistent (or atleast enough I've never noticed it changing as a still photographa), and the ultimate performance of the lens is good, better than most 'vintage' lenses but not cutting edge modern. With modern tech you could link the compensation in electronically with a motor driving that to hold a constant field of view. I am still surprised one of the Chinese manufacturers hasn't built a zoom macro even if it was only targeted at stills. I have always been impressed by the wonderful quality in every video, I remain a happy supporter.
@MediaDivisionАй бұрын
@@necron1050 cool cool… maybe I have to take a look at that lens. As a product… I think there might be just to few customers… at least for a non breathing cine version. I never heard a complain by heavy users like The Marmalade. And then… you can count these kind of buyers on one hand.
@RobertHollingworthАй бұрын
I have two of those Nikkor Zoom macros. It’s a truly special lens. It looks gentle and creamy like a vintage primes, especially to direct light, but handles with a solid macro, and zooms. And it’s sharp. It’s really quite insane.

@-szegaАй бұрын
12:40 most "not totally vintage" macro lenses often have reduced focus breathing compared to older designs and lenses do vary a lot there, even from the same brand. I don't think it's a design goal for any of them though. The most extreme anti-example I know of is the Sigma 180mm f/2.8, which has infinite focus breathing, because it moves through zero degrees angle of view (object-telecentric) and at 1:1 has a slightly negative angle of view (object-hypercentric, meaning objects further away appear slightly larger than closer objects).
@-szegaАй бұрын
One key reason why this correction might be rather unpopular might be that if you wanted to have NO focus breathing at all from infinity to 1:1, then you need to satisfy atan(2f) = atan(2f' * (1 + P)), where f' is the focal length at 1:1 and P is the pupillary magnification. Regardless of f', this only occurs with P = (f - f')/f', which is necessarily greater than 1 (P cannot be negative by definition), which is rather unfortunate for a macro lens as that further diminishes working aperture (i.e. reduces NA, increasing diffraction and decreasing brightness).
@MediaDivisionАй бұрын
I get it… you are an optical designer 😂 I am obviously not, but I get it and thank you for the interesting input. MAybe the modern lenses perform better because they tend to be more tele centric, I don't know. Just taking this from the practical side.

Wunderbar as usual ! Question for this particular type of shots : did you budgetized the cost of the whole production VS full CGI ? With Unreal or Blender ? Sorry if the question was already ask.
@MediaDivisionАй бұрын
Thank you… no, why would I? … my expertise, profession is filming. Also, the interest in optics is only served by doing this practical. My general approach to things is to do it practical if you can at all. While you could do this in CGI, it would have been vastly more expensive, time consuming and complicated to pull off than to do it practical… at least if realism was the desired result. Even a very good CG recreating lack the soul of it. Here is an attempt… guess why he left the hand out. kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJu8oo2eatFgfNE

How does the lenses perform when you focus far away? Can you use this set of lenses of close to all your filming needs, or are other lenses better for shots focused further away?
@MediaDivisionАй бұрын
Well, they are just not optimised for that. You can focus to infinity of course, but... things like the breathing is not that great for all normal use, plus, I find them to slow for normal narrative work
@just_eirikАй бұрын
@@MediaDivision That makes a lot of sense! I should have guessed they aren’t good for that when you said they have a lot of breathing, it just makes sense that that would make them unsuitable for general film making.
