"I'm surprised you ever loved me." I've seen this 100 times, and every time it brings me closer to tears. My God, that line! This is Dick Whitman, insecure, self-loathing, a kid floating at sea, looking for the anchor. This is Mad Men's most heartbreaking moment, because its subtle, and it still impales your very soul.

I think something surprising about the show is how they managed to sustain a Betty plotline even though her life was far distant from all the other drama of the show. They didn't shoehorn her in by doing that typical tv shit of making her a secretary of SCP or something. It's like...to them, the interior life of a domestic housewife in the 1960s had just as much drama as office intrigue

Usually, in shows with a conflicted, ambivalent male lead, the female protagonists are so poorly written that with distance and reflection of course you would be abhorred by the abuse they're taking, but you wouldn't feel that way. You would feel more prone to his side. That's one thing which sets Mad Men apart from many shows: You see Bettys struggles as well, you can relate to her and she's not just a bitter device of plot delay.
@Soltani88
@Soltani88 3 жыл бұрын
Calling someone conflicted and ambivalent is a little redundant wouldn't you say? Having said that, calling Don ambivalent doesn't really do him justice. While his desires from the world are unresolved, his philosophy of the world is relatively decided. Also, While Betty is a very well written charactor with personal struggles, I wouldn't say her struggles and how she relates to them speak very Kindly of her character.

This moment grew even more complex as the series wore on. We have the luxury of hindsight, all that Don and Betty did after their divorce, so we examine it from the lens of knowing where it will lead. When it premiered, it was the culmination of every lie Don had told since the first episode (and before) and JH and JJ do a fine job of portraying just how much is on the line. It’s a masterclass in writing, acting, and storytelling.

@Baba Ganush I remember HSB. Interestingly enough, my girlfriend is closely related to the late Robert Prosky who was in the last couple seasons. I've definitely seen it, don't remember that much though. I'll see if it's available for streaming or whatever. It's your favorite, I'm glad, but no way it's gonna beat MM for me. We all have our reasons for why things connect with us and, for me, MM connected like no other show ever. Like I said, nothing even really comes close. My girlfriend's favorite is The Wire, which I would say is my number two...but there's a huge difference between one and two. I can't explain it. MM is just perfect. It's more like one long movie or a novel than a TV show. Never did ANYTHING corny, never had a bad season or even a less than perfect episode, and it ended exactly when it should have. Even episodes of The Sopranos were sometimes below par, but I can't think of one episode of Mad Men that wasn't perfectly done. And it absolutely had the best finale ever.

What I found most interesting was how anti-climactic this scene was (it is still a great scene though); by this point, the revelation of Don's past almost felt like it was just the trigger of the marriage that would inevitably end. At the beginning of the series, it felt like there was so much for them in the marriage to lose, but all of the distrust and betrayal along the way seemed to have reduced it to an empty shell. It's as if Don's past, despite him successfully hiding it, was still able to erode their lives from the inside out; the revelation of Don's past was just a formality. My guess is, even if they tried to mend it, there was nothing left to be saved. Instead of the revelation of Don's past being a damaging explosion, it just fizzled out like there was nothing left to actually be destroyed.

Funny because from the very beginning the show actually lets you know that the marriage is an empty one Lets look at season 1...literally season 1 the very foundation of the entire series: -Don is never home -Don is inattentive -Don is withdrawn -Don is absent -Don is forgetful Don is late for a family photo session because he was out ××××ing his beatnik girlfriend while Betty and the kids waited at the office Don looks for excuses to not be around the house even when he has to be...like when he "picked up" Sally's birthday cake and never came back His own neighbors laughed because they knew he wouldnt come back...even though Betty thought he would The fact that his neighbors laugh actually lets you know that by the 1st season Don already has this reputation of not wanting to be in the house...Betty was just too blind to see it but even the neighbors saw it This is a running theme in the 1st season of the show...Betty being naive...even the psychologist Don hired for Betty tells Don that Betty has the mentality of a child The fact that the marriage falls apart is just due to Betty finally accepting what had been going on from the very beginning of the show...because from the beginning we see that there is nothing left in this marriage except for Betty's blindness and Don's fascade If youre blind you cant see a fascade...if you have a fascade you take advantage of blindness...it was the perfect ying and yang of failure

Two things about this scene: 1) I think the character we've come to know as Don Draper would have been savvy enough to put this in a safe deposit box, and 2) I think it's interesting that Betsy Draper is written as not being afraid to confront a stranger with a secret that could demolish his entire life.

I think it speaks to Don’s confidence in the rigidity of domestic roles in that era: that’s Don’s desk in his home office; that’s the place where only he goes. Betty holds sway over the kitchen, the bedroom, or the dining room, but not Don’s office; that’s what he believes. It’s sexist and patronizing, but a sign of the times. Plus, in a safe deposit box in a bank, they’re out of touch, out of reach. Don hated his past but he couldn’t stop reflecting on it. If he wanted the photos gone, he could’ve just burned them. Instead he kept them close by because he could never escape Dick Whitman.

Of all of Don's awful mistresses, I hated this whiny teacher the most. She was a weak, pathetic character and Sally's teacher- so gross. And her weak brother with the stupid side plot about the job. Hated her!!! Best mistress was Rachel Menken

Taking the name of his dead superior officer in the war just so no he could go home is probably the one thing he did NOT need to lie about to Betty. She would not have cared if it was only that and not the other 500000 things he lies about.

C Alex nor did he love her. He cheated on her with multiple women and wasn’t helping her raise their children. Yes she cheated once but that was only because he cheated multiple times with multiple women. I don’t sympathise with Don at all. He definitely ruined the lives of all the women in his life except for Peggy and Joan. He ruined Betty, sally, Faye, and even was about to ruin Meghan but she left the marriage before it was too late. Poor Betty didn’t get the chance, she left the toxic marriage, tried to keep it together with sally, then found herself again before being diagnosed with cancer.

@@mohammadalshamsi717 Thank you. I love this show, but there has always been this one-sided thing from certain viewers about who was "wronged" in the marriage between Don & Betty. Betty wanted to love and understand Don. We had earlier episodes of Betty trying to find some common ground with her husband. Don lied to her from the very moment of him dating and pursuing her.

I enjoyed it all at first but it soon got old but it is a great primer on how an alpha male behaves and more power to them. It was the same where I used to work. There was one handsome, witty and charismatic guy who nailed almost all the girls in the office and everybody liked him. Sometimes an individual gets all the gifts.

"if she loved him she'd be willing to understand" - she gave him like, 300 chances before this and he kept messing up. Don was immature and a prolific liar. They shouldn't be together, it's what is best for both of them. Relationships take work and nobody is entitled to them - you don't just set it on cruise control and expect it to be there forever.

Don Draper is one of the most misunderstood TV characters. He was abandoned, traumatized, and lost since from childhood.He needed help. Someone who could show some form of empathy towards him, without harsh judgement. As for the cheating, it was a coping mechanism ( not that it's right). He respected women. He was too scared to commit to them because he was protecting them against his pain.
@Francoise888
@Francoise888 5 жыл бұрын
Redi Mck oh please. Many survivors of trauma become perfectly nice and self-responsible people. This character was shown far more empathy and forgiveness than most people can dream of. Narcissists and sociopaths do not empathize with those they abuse- it is a very infantile approach to life that says “I am the victim, therefore no one else can be.”
