Growing up I was lost in both worlds. My mother grew up in the shadow of the Pentagon outside DC, as did I. My father, however, grew up on a tobacco farm in southern Virginia. My DC friends and family viewed me as too southern and too country. My southern family viewed me as too northern and to citified. I think this song is also indicative of a change in society at a large. When I was a kid, and still in parts of this country, women participated in certain events only because they were brought by a man (boyfriend, husband, father, etc.). In the last 20 years, you are seeing more women becoming sports fans and outdoors fans independent of any male participation. I think one example of the change was the response by US Soccer to the sexual discrimination lawsuit and the public's reaction to their response. Even the male commentators on the sports-talk shows were reacting with a "say what?!?" I am so glad that his is yet another stereotype that is beginning to die the death it deserves. We have a long way to go, but we are making progress.
