I was one of the lucky people to call Dr. Abbas my primary care physician. I can still remember meeting her for the first time on a sunny beautiful day in 2012. I was a nurse needing a new physician and we instantly clicked. I can remember Dr. Abbas sitting Indian style on a chair and looking right at me when we spoke. As a patient you only pray to find a physician like this and I did. Dr. Abbas saw me through a very serious health issue that I had and when I saw her a few weeks later she jumped up out of her chair and hugged me. I remember her saying she thought she might never see me again as I had to have a very serious two part surgery. Five years later I never thought it would be the other way around. I saw the news that night and just started to cry. I just asked why did this have to happen?

I had the pleasure of working with Rima for about two years AND to be her patient. I absolutely loved her and her family. They opened their home to the staff for parties and it was amazing to be in their presence. I found this video years later because Rima was on my mind, every holiday is a reminder of this tragedy. Prayers to you and their family, friends and coworkers😢

I’m so, so sorry for the loss of your beautiful family. I, too, lost a 32 year old sister to a drunk driver in 1990, as she was heading out to work at the hospital at 7am, one morning. The killer got a sentence of one year but only served 8 months. That’s all my sister’ life was worth according to the law. So freaking maddening. :(

My sincerest condolences on the loss of your family. I grew up around a serial group of drunk drivers who occasionally were caught, but prior to the stiffer penalties that are being implemented today. I don’t believe that the penalties are harsh enough; especially for continuous DUI arrests. I feel that DUI manslaughter is an offense to the victims families, and should be considered Murder in the Second Degree. It may not be premeditated, but circumstances allowed the crime to occur. I wasn’t aware that the technology to prevent such incidents existed, but I applaud your tenacity in fighting for justice for your family.

I am so sorry for the loss of your family! There should be a mechanism in every car so that the driver can not drive if drinking. Just imagine how many lives would be saved! I think this is the only way to stop it as there is so much information out there and it just doesn't seem to matter to some people. My heart goes out to you Rana.

Statistically about 2/3 of adults either don’t drink or drink responsibly. Usually about 2% of drivers are drunk on the road at any time. It should surprise no one that that 2% causes over 50% of accidents. That said, the damage that the last 1/3 of adults that drink irresponsibly can cause is immeasurable.
