My sister Laura was killed by a drunk driver as her and a friend crossed a street. It was 3 weeks after she was told she was finally Cancer Free. The drunk was over twice the legal limit, suspended license, using his mothers car (she should have been charged with endangering the lives of children, she had to know he was drunk when she gave him her keys) , had his 3 young children in the car and going twice the speed limit. There was absolutely no remorse from him or his family, they would taunt us outside the Courthouse after each hearing by laughing and making jokes about what happened. We never got an apology until he wanted to be paroled, he made a video that none of us watched. He only served 5 years, his family gets to hold him again, we will never hold Laura again until we meet her in heaven. I have absolutely no sympathy for drunk drivers. I’m so sorry for the loss of your wife and daughter.

This story just crushes me. I'm in awe of the family for just being able to continue their lives. A beautiful family torn apart, a set of twins who will never have their mother. And hearing that the smallest child at home cried all day, for months, just broke my heart. The drunk driver received a 10 yr sentence; not nearly long enough and she will probably be out earlier. Our justice system is way too lenient when someone is killed and comes down very hard on drug dealers. Our cockeyed system.

My heart breaks for your family. My daughter was arrested twice for DUI. I'd always told both of my kids if you've been drinking, call me and I will come and get you. Once she did. Then she was arrested and the judge had a daughter who was killed by a drunk driver. I hoped he would be tough on her so it would never happen again. He wasn't. Fast forward a couple years and she and her then boyfriend were out celebrating his birthday and both decided they were only a couple miles for their homes and both drove. She was arrested about 2 miles from her house and she blew a .331 so she was taken to the hospital for a blood draw. It was even higher and they were all shocked by how drunk she was as she only weighed about 100 lbs. They were shocked she wasn't dead. Long story short, we are now estranged because she said I was the worst mother on the planet and her drinking was my fault. She's now 41 and we have no contact. She won't let me see my grandsons who are 15 and 8. The oldest one hates me because he believes all the nasty things she's told him about me. I just thank God that she never hurt or killed anyone. I also pray for her to clean up her life that she's made a mess of. Some day I pray we can mend the rift but I don't hold my breath. She does finally admit she is an alcoholic so I guess that could be a first step. I hope and pray you & your children are doing well. God Bless you and your family.

The driver drank all night and when he expected his dad to come in from work early in the morning, he decided to avoid his dad and go out and drive around till his dad went to bed. Meanwhile, he falls asleep at the wheel, drunker than a skunk and killed her. Her stepdaughter survived the crash but my sister died immediately. He got one year in the slammer and came out 8 months later. That, folks, is a slap in the face. He murdered someone and got 8 months for it. We miss her every day. This is such a heartbreaking story. I remember this story when it happened. While I was telling everyone about it, I was emphasizing that she had kids and that she was coming home from visiting her babies in the NICU. And then I realized, no loss, no person’s life is any more valuable, or any more tragic, based on their current status in life or how many children they have or whether they are married, etc. No one should die a preventable death; each one is just as tragic as the others. These horrific heartbreaking tragedies happen, because as human beings, we cannot accept or put ourselves in the place of someone that is going to cause a horrific tragedy. Someone who is drinking and does not feel drunk at all is not going to think they’re putting lives at risk. They are going to think that that happens when someone “really drunk” and impaired gets behind the wheel. Therefore, we cannot just rely on an individual's judgment as to whether they should drive, or even their friends, or the bartender for that matter. Also, we cannot rely on a person’s fear of punishments to stop them from getting behind the wheel. We need to have the technology. Every strategy that’s been tried so far obviously is not working. Or not working enough. These fatalities happen in a split second! We cannot turn back the clocks. New solutions need to be developed. Punishments like jail, loss of a license, etc. are not going to work because people do not believe that’s going to happen to them. The prevention of such horrific, heartbreaking tragedies cannot be left to somebody’s personal judgment. That is not the solution. I cannot repeat this enough! We must have the right, effective, constantly developing, and advancing technology to take the place of a person's judgment. We must figure a way around the cost benefit analysis for corporate America (and beyond)!! how could there be a cost benefit analysis for lives lost?? In the meantime, can some philanthropists get together and finance the technology?? My heart and prayers go out to this entire family. From first learning about until now, this tragedy has struck a chord with me. I am so sorry for your loss. By fighting the status quo with the prevention of DUI/DWI you are creating a legacy. A piece of Katie will always be alive and with each of you.

Again, I lived in Norway for years, Gigi. They have the strictest drinking/driving laws I've ever come across: Even one drink, if caught, automatic three months in jail, loss of license for two years, and a fine of half your monthly income regardless of what it is. It does not matter who you are, doctor, lawyer, prime minister, the king etc. Second offense: longer jail time, permanent loss of license, and the fine skyrockets. There is zero, no pity, no excuses, no warnings for anyone. And that strictness involves far more than drinking/driving. I got caught speeding, first offense there. This was the late 1970s, and the fine was enormous. I told the officer this was my first offense. He firmly said "No, it's not. This is just the first time you've gotten caught." I speak fluent Norwegian, but he knew I was American by the name on my Norwegian license. You can be sure he knew exactly what we do here, and was having none of it, or me. It was in Norway that I learned exactly what law enforcement should be. Police officers are treated with the utmost respect there, and people have absolutely the right kind of fear when they're seen in the rearview mirror. This country should be ashamed for the countless pity parties given to these murderers, and that the police are pretty much not given that respect. Which, of course, is the reason drunk drivers and criminals in general have a field day flaunting their law breaking.

@@donnabaardsen5372 Well said Donna! I am of Norwegian descent and know some things about the country: my mom and sister made several trips there when Mom was alive, but I didn’t know about their very strict traffic laws. This story is SO heartbreaking! 💔 My heart goes out to Katie’s family for this tremendous loss of life. The daughter of one of my in-laws was caught driving under the influence. Thank God she didn’t hurt anyone or cause an accident, but she had to drive with a device on her car after that. It detected alcohol and caused the car not to start if she had any alcohol in her system. It was a wake-up call for her. She has been sober since the day she was caught (over a year ago) and is living a much happier life sober. I pray your family finds healing. I love the picture of Katies’s parents holding the twins up to look at a framed photo of their precious mom holding them in the NICU. I'm sorry for your loss. I had a cousin killed by a drunk driver on the way to work. They didn't have MADD organized when this happened. I wish MADD would have never hsd to be organized in the 1st place.😭😡😡😡😡

What a beautiful, strong, loving family. Automobile safety shouldn't need to be mandated. The ability to prevent the impaired from driving should be as standard as brakes, tail lights and door locks. I'm so sorry for the loss of Katie, and for all those who've lost loved ones to drunk or impaired drivers.

When Ken mentioned the technology for vehicles that will stop a person from being able to drive if they've been drinking, my thoughts were EXACTLY!!! I'm glad he's partnered with MADD to work toward getting this approved to be in EACH AND EVERY vehicle, be they new or older models!!! So many folks are drinking and driving these days! These represent yet more potential catastrophic wrecks resulting in the loss of innocent lives!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's always tragic when someone gets on the road with alcohol of any amount in their system. All first time DUIs should have to sit and hear these people's stories, face to face before they can ever drive again. Second offenders go to jail for minimum of 5 years and if there are any accidents or injuries its jail for 20, killing someone while drunk is life. No plea bargaining, no exceptions!!! When the punishment hurts drunk drivers, it will reduce the number of deaths and injuries. Everyone always cries it too extreme, but in the country's that do extreme punishments the problem no longer exists.

💔 Deepest Sympathy, to this Beautiful family... My brother was an alcoholic, and he would call Me drunk sometimes and say, I hit something, don't know what it was. My heart would, drop I would call police stations,hospitals.. try to find his routes. Being angry, at Him, trying to get Him help, he wouldn't listen. He knew, if God forbid he hurt anyone I would turn him in, his wife wouldn't help, I would say take away his keys please ,She wouldnt n let him drive like that. Then the company he worked for, tested his blood... They gave him a choice , go to their rehab for a year or get fired. Thank God, he went to Rehab n sober, now for years. I believe DUI Laws should be tougher. I don't know why PPL are allowed to drive using breathlylizer in auto to start ignition... After, a DUI. I know for a fact, this didn't deter a young girl who went to school, with my kid's... She was an alcoholic and after DUI, & Breathlylizer, she didn't stop drinking... then Arrested for another DUI... 🚩This has to Stop ... Too many lives are destroyed. 🙏Prayers and Blessings to this Family and their Labor of love, for his Wife, their daughter... Those poor Angel's Please Do Not Let Someone you know drink n drive.... ❤️No.. more... Enough
