God has recalled his singing Angel. We can only be grateful he shared her with us for as long as he did. For the holidays you should check out the "Carpenter-Christmas Memories" album. My favorite is "Merry Christmas Darling" but even the traditional songs show off Richard's arraignment genius with Karen's heaven sent voice.

She never found the love she craved. I have seen and heard this many, many times, but I never fail to tear up knowing that was the last time we would ever heard her sing. I met her and her brother once backstage in 1975 and Karen was thin even then. No ne would talk about it or knew what to do. Bittersweet, yet she left so much wonderful music for us to enjoy. Never forgotten and always beloved.

Maddy, your heart was obviously touched by this song, that's really sweet. You kind of get a taste of the sadness that we all felt with the passing of Karen back in the 80's. It was the same year that I lost the love of my life when she committed suicide 😢 But anyway, Karen's spirit lives on in her music and it's great that everyone can continue to experience the happiness that her songs bring. Thanks for the reaction!

Karen's story is one of the most tragic in the American entertainment industry. She struggled with her eating disorder most of her life, and the stress of her fame and success made it worse and eventually killed her. As others have noted, doctors back then really didn''t know the cause and how to help. For the public, nobody really knew there was a problem until she died. It seemed unexpected, but the family knew she was crashing. The public would see her in photos and TV towards the end and you could tell she didn't look well.

Her songs always had an underlying melancholy because her life always had an underlying melancholy, once the Carpenters began to get noticed. Karen was content to sit behind the drums which she loved, and ok, she would also sing and of course it was her voice that made the Carpenters who they were. But that wasn't enough. They made her drop the drums completely and just move out front and sing. If it wasn't for the incredible selfishness and complete controlling of her life by her brother Richard, and her mother Agnes, she would still be with us today. Karen stuck with the group and they had hit after hit after hit and they toured the world ... but that wasn't enough. Karen wanted to get married and to start a family, while she was still young enough. But her brother and her mother would not let her have her own life, have her own family, move out on her own ... because that would be the end of the Carpenters. You can't have the Carpenters with just Richard, because Karen was the voice. Her mother Agnes always favored Richard and never praised Karen while she was alive. Heart failure because of anorexia nervosa was the cause of her death. But the reason for her anorexia nervosa, not unlike cutting, is an act of self-control, when a person feels like they have no control over their own life. It was the only thing that she could do, that her brother and mother could have no influence over. If you ever want to go more into depth about the whole tragic story, a very good read is called "Little Girl Blue". I love watching Carpenters reactions, but every time her brother's name is brought up, it makes me furious, because 95% of the world doesn't realize what a negative impact he had on her life. Was he a brilliant arranger… Yes. Was he instrumental in their success… Yes. Was it at the expense of his sister's life… Yes. Thank you for the great, emotional and real reaction. You never have to apologize for showing your true feelings because that's what music does is to make us feel and remember. ☮️ Steve in Dallas

Having read "Little Girl Blue", and seen the accompanying documentary "Karen Carpenter: Starving for Perfection" (along with just about every other book and documentary on their lives), I fully concur with the role that Agnes played in Karen's struggles around self esteem and her low sense of self worth. While Richard was obviously in total control of their professional careers, he actually was very supportive of Karen in ways that she never received from her mother. Yes, Richard did a very great disservice to her in regards to the treatment of her solo album, but even Karen stated that when it came to the music and direction of the Carpenters, she was virtually always on the same page with her brother, as they thought identically. What Richard and others failed to do was to protect her from their mother's favoritism and exclusive adoration of Richard. Part of the problem was that Karen herself idolized her brother just as much as their mother did. I think that if the powers that be (i.e., Herb Alpert, Jerry Moss, and Richard) had allowed her solo album to be released, it probably would have changed her life's trajectory, even if it would have meant the eventual end of the Carpenters as a duo. Nonetheless, I believe that unlike his mother, Richard genuinely loved his sister and was very concerned about her health. Obviously, Mental illnesses like anorexia are very complicated disorders, and it cannot be traced to just one thing like the lack of a mother's love, though I believe that contributed significantly. She obviously lacked a sense of control over both her personal and professional life, as well as trying to manage the pressure of the music industry's expectations around what women should look like back in the 70s. Yes, Karen was a victim in some ways, but she also made some very bad choices, and was known to be very stubborn and immature at times. By the time that she came clean about her eating disorder, the damage had already been done, and it was just a matter of time before her heart finally gave out.
