Madeline Busse Special (1974) on Sandwiches of History⁣

Williams Bread published Williams’ Sandwich Recipes in 1974. It was a compendium of sandwich recipe folks sent it. Today, we’re taking on the Madeline Busse Special. Hailing from Rosburg in Washington State (I am presuming since all the submitters were in the Pacific Northwest), Madeline uses not one but two kinds of cheese for here special. Not to mention garlic salt and oregano. Yeah, she got a little schmancy and I am here for it. Well, as schamancy as a recipe gets from Williams’ Sandwich Recipes of 1974.

I think broiled tomato anything is delightful, I think tomatoes, especially summer ripe ones, are underrated sandwich ingredients.

I like this! Oregano is an under appreciated sandwich ingredient. Cooper sharp white is my "American" cheese choice.

The toppings are exactly like the filling for a “pastel de pizza” from Brazil. Instead of bread, a “pastel” is more like a giant rectangular wonton.

My grandson came home from school and I took off the headphones to listen to him say he didn't learn anything today and he did his homework in class , I responded saying I was learning to make a sandwich because I have never done it , then instructed him to lie when he comes home from school an say his head is over flowing with knowledge and it's leaking onto that first sandwich I ever made following your instructions , dunno what will come of this interaction but do hope it helps his sense of humour 🙂

Not really a plus-up but an assembly note: The directions should be to put the oregano on before the tomato so that the moisture from the tomato softens the dry oregano and leaches out the flavor.

I hate to be that internet guy ... but the top piece of bread doesn't seem like a fair "plus up." It's going to work 90% of the time, but it sort of goes against the spirit of the original open-face recipe. Your more creative plus ups tend to be more interesting anyway.
