முதன்முறை பார்க்கும்போது 50% அளவிற்கே புரிந்த்து. இரண்டாவது முறை பார்த்தபிறகு 90% தெளிவடையமுடிந்த்து. மீண்டும் ஓரிருமுறை பார்த்தால் முழுமை பெறும் என நினைக்கிறேன். இப்பதிவை காண்போர் எல்லோருக்குமே அடிப்படை தெரிந்திருக்க வாய்ப்பில்லை(நானும்). எனவே அடிப்படைக்கு மேலான விவரங்களை அறிய, அவற்றை ஐயா அவர்கள் பதிவிடும் வரை காத்திருக்குமாறு வேண்டுகிறேன். R1, R2 ,R3...G1.... இவை தொடர்பாக நீண்ட நாட்களாக ஐயம் எனக்கு. இப்பதிவின் மூலம் அவ்வையம் விடைபெற்றது.... நன்றி

For people wondering why there are only 72 Melakarta ragams, here is the reason. It’s simple math. Let’s consider C major scale. There are 12 notes - C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A and B. There are 7 swarams in a ragam - Sa, Ri, Ga, Ma, Pa, Da and Ni. Sa is fixed to be C and Pa is fixed to be G. Out of the remaining swarams and notes, Ri could be C# or D. If Ri is D#, it wouldn’t be a melakarta ragam and it would be called Ga. So, Ri could be either of the 2 notes - C# or D. Ga could be D# or E. But if Ri is C#, then there is a possibility that Ga could be D. So Ga could be either of the 3 notes - D, D# or E. Ma could be F or F# - either of the 2 notes. Pa is fixed as G. Da could be G# or A - either of the 2 notes. Ni could be A# or B. But following the same principle that was considered for Ga, Ni could also be A, if Da is G#. So Ni could be either of the 3 notes - A, A# or B. Now if we multiply these numbers, we have 2*3*2*2*3=72.

Simple explanations, could follow it. The very basics is all about permutation and combinations of each of these base notes. You could also explain the very basis of this permutations by splitting the entire from S to P and P to S in two rows ... the combinations first start from keeping the first row static (rather like a loop in loop, the first loop variables won't increment until the child loop is completed its iterations) till 2nd row finishes all its combinations. Bit confusing.. It would be easier to understand if we know the real sounds of all swaras (eg. difference between R1,R2 ...). First of all I would like to say a big THANK YOU for these lessons. I’m trying yo understand carnatic basics since last 2 years with the help of information available over Internet and I made lots of assumptions without understandings. But this lesson gave me key to understand different swaras in a Ragam. You explained in very simple way to understand how 72 melakartha ragas were categorized. Its bit confusing but I will keep watch this video until i be familiar with all swaras.

virtualpiano.net/ those who have difficulty visualising what he is saying, please try out what he is saying on this app. This is very basic permutation combination we studied in maths in high school. For example, fix the R1,G1,M1,P,D1 and try out all the three possibilities of Ni. You'll see how the feel changes by just varying that one note.
