I don't think he had complete free will. It's clearly stated his soul was consumed when he picked up Frostmourne. He was more a vessel at this point for Ner'Zhul, tho not completely merged yet until he actually puts on the helm of dominator. He would never destroy Lordaeron if he had complete free will. But there has always been a part of Arthas left. It shows when he revived Invincible, when he kept Jaina's locket, and when it's stated that it's all that keeps the Scourge from annihilating Azeroth.

The only part I would change is when Uther is talking about hoping there's a place in hell for Arthas. He delivers the line as if he barely notices the sword through his middle. I remember this scene in the books. When Arthas was laying on the ground, he dropkicked Uther in the stomach, which catched the Paladin by suprise. Arthas learned that trick from Muradin as a child, since, in Uthers words "such rude behavior in battle doesnt fit a Paladin".
