It's intentional because they want to apply pressure to the hold outs. Make it as expensive and p*inful as possible to access physical media - to wear these people down into going digital. This is VERY intentional and calculated. And honestly, if there is a PS6 they won't even bother. They are prepping the small minority of (often middle-aged) hold-outs for a upcoming generation of hardware (that will be here fairly shortly) without pressed discs or cases whatsoever. This is basically Sony as gently as possible cutting their supply off. They have been doing this for several years with Blu-Ray movies and their Sony branded Blu-Ray players. I don't know if you remember this, but Final Fantasy IX had a overpriced official strategy guide where Squaresoft actually filled half the book with what amounted to primitive QR codes to their website (this was when companies wanted to get ride of printed media, to force you on a site). I feel like this is Sony doing something similar for physical media people. Making it expensive, p*inful, and pointless so you give up. And statistically, like printed game guides, the average video game playing person in 2024 could care less (especially the younger people). So it will be successful.

@@zapmando To match the PS5 Pro, it'll be something that runs 60fps 4K uspcaled with partial ray tracing, you'd need an R7 5700X 3D and RX 7700 XT (or higher). Those parts in a good custom PC would cost you a 1K (USD), pretty much the same amount as when you pay for two years of PS+ and the Pro with the Drive and stand. Better 7+ years of freedom to play many types of games be it old/new, than to be restricted to 2 years of online and a good amount of old games.. and then have that cut unless you pay more.

I miss the days when console prices went down over time. I mean I got a Sega Genesis late in it's life cycle for like $50. Parts and chips got cheaper so savings could be passed on to consumers. A small game store in a town near the town I live made a instagram post saying to not buy the pro and that they repaired more PS5s than launch model XBox 360s and that there's little to no PS5 exclusives. Couple of thoughts on this. Unless you absolutely have a ton of disposable income, hold out for some type of discount. Wait for real world testing and allow the platform to stabilize - games struggling to maintain 60fps 'performance' mode on the base PS5 should at least hit that target on this machine. If they're designed with 30fps in mind then save your money and don't even bother with this.

I can’t imagine a more unnecessary system. I play my PS5 in performance mode and have NEVER felt it fell short in visuals. My games run silky smooth, and everything looks great in 4k. I will not spend $700 on a system, especially one that doesn’t even come with a disc drive. If I’m spending the money, I’ll just get a PC at that point. I think the PS5 stands well enough on it's own in this case. I have a earlier PS5 unit with 4.02 FW on it that I've kept boxed up. I bought a second hand used PS5 on ebay for $250 almost a year ago. Soldered a new HDMI port on it, replaced the liquid metal and it's run like a champ ever since. It's not worth upgrading for the massive cost sink. I have a lot of physical PS5 games. I'd need a disc drive. Add that all up. $779 + tax Almost $850 Nah. I'll keep the coin instead for the switch successor

Here's the math- $450 for base PS5 set + $175 for 2 TB SSD + $75 for the Pro speed GPU and Ram. That's what makes up the $700. That's less than the price of an entry level PC, which likely would be reusing parts from an earlier build. These consoles ever since the 360 and PS3 have been locked down mini PCs, and MS and Sony do not want to be absorbing as much of the costs of that custom hardware anymore the way they did in the past. It's the games though. If the PS5 only has a handful of exclusives, why should someone care about playing those games with marginally better graphics. That's why $700 might be a little high for a Pro console.

The digital XSX and 2TB XSX is not mid gen upgrade and that never was Xbox intention, but just new options of the same console. The reason is because Xbox will not make a "pro" mid-gen upgrade but instead they will release the next generation a year or two earlier than the PS6. Microsoft will announce the next generation on either end of 2025 or in the middle of 2026. I never owned any Playstation before but I get your nostalgia feeling for the PS1 as of myself I used to play on the borrowed PS1 and PS2 of my cousin and indeed these were great consoles. Despite this nostalgia feeling I am not much a fan of the PS5 because the only exclusive ls that I like are Spider-Man and Days gone. Xbox in the other hand has Forza Horizon, Forza Motorsport and so on. I didn't buy a PS5 and I will just skip the PS5 PRO and will just keep my XSX and buy the next generation of Xbox on day 1.

The fact that they are selling the disc drive separately for another $80 basically making the system over $800 with tax is bs. Sony can keep the pro, for a few hundred more a gaming PC with pretty decent specs can be bought instead. If I ever get a PS5 I'll be fine with the slim disc bundle.

I have been a supporter of the PlayStation since the original that launched back in 1995. I was actually the first to get my system at my local Electronics Boutique (may have been Software Etc.) back in the day. Unfortunately these prices are getting ridiculous! By the time you buy the disc drive and stand, plus the taxes, once it's all said amd dome your probably looking close to $900. Yeah... No... I am good with my current systems and my retro systems. This isn't even the PS6 which probably will cost a Grand when, and IF, they ever make one. And I Love my physical media which seems they are now trying their best to move onto without totally pissing everyone off by offering an add-on drive. Sadly this will be the first Sony system I don't get at Launch... if ever. Hopefully Nintendo and their next console will be more affordable and actually steal some PlayStation loyalist. If Nintendo wants to do it mow is their time to do so. Sony is just shooting themselves in the foot because nobody is going buy a PS5 PRO for $700+ then buy a possible PS6 in a few more years for even more. I feel like Sony is going the way of mobile devices for the latest and greatest, with slight upgrades, but cost even more. Sorry Somy you guys just screwd yourselves.... didn't you learn anything from the PlayStation 3? I guess not.

Wow that PS5 Pro pricing lol. Actually thinking about it, this is probably a ploy to use reverse psychology on gamers into thinking a PS5 slim is better value for money, thus push the sales of that. I also expect they anticipate this and PS5 Pro will only get low batch volume manufacturing in comparison to the slim model. Crafty SONY.

Stop wasting money on online play subscription and all of Sony exclusives can be played on PC, at even higher settings. Been playing and enjoying many of PS exclusives on PC for a few years now. I’m having Neo Geo AES console flashbacks right now. This PS5 Pro is not as drastic as the 90’s but I remember Super Nintendo was $199 and Sega Genesis was right around that price. SNK comes out and asks who wants arcade games at home. As a teenager in the 90’s I was excited and ready to buy a NEO GEO after hearing that announcement. Then the bombshell of $599 for the console plus $199-$249 for games. Never bought one as minimum wage was $4.25 and I couldn’t afford that. I stuck to going to the arcade with $5 bucks of quarters and played neo geo that way.

It’s pricey, but that’s its only fault. I’m a 40 something dude stuck in the 90s, and honestly, physical media is annoying. All the patches and fixes and add-ons, they pretty much ruined all the pros of having it. Also not everyone can have a huge basement to store all this stuff nicely. I have over a 100 games spread across my switch and Xbox library. I would hate to have all the boxes and deal with the hassle of swapping games. Having everything in a box is just more convenient.

To clarify, developers need to implement optimizations to fully utilize the increased power, ray-tracing and upscaling features. If they decide it’s not worth their time or resources, you’ve essentially bought a $700+ driveless regular PS5.

Throwing more power at games almost never makes a bad game good or a good game better. Look at something like Red Dead Redepmtion 2, or a Fallout game, or a Zelda game....they are packed with fun, rewarding content. If they were run on better hardware most people wouldn't care.
