This song is dedicated to her daughter. The bag full of water that she holds symbolizes her daughter. Because water is a healing element in all religions and cultures, and her daughter healed her. This video also shows a Japanese dance called "butoh", in which the dancers perform strange but expressive moves telling a story with their bodies and faces. If you listen to the lyrics "Looking at my life is very clear to me, something is ending and something begins. Nothing takes the past away like the future. You're shelter form the storm, give me comfort in your arms". Her daughter is the shelter from the storm of life, keeping her safe from all the noise and superficiality. So it's about her spiritual jorney and how becoming a mother changed her perspective on life and fame.

Fashion fan fact: Inspired by Arthur Golden's 1997 novel Memoirs of a Geisha, the video portrays Madonna as a geisha, dancing in a small room. The red kimono worn by her in the video was designed by French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. It was worn by the singer during her performance of the song at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards. The costume and music video has been cited by journalist and academics as one of Madonna's most iconic and best re-inventions. This look is so iconic that was responsible to ruin the Runway category of drag race’s S08E05 and create the sequel in the S09E06.

She wrote the song after she had her daughter. Listen to the lyrics, it’s about how having her baby, that she yearned for for years, changed her out look. It’s also a brilliant video, her in red with black hair is unusual for her. It’s iconic. Xx

the video was inspired after she read the novel "Memoirs of a Geisha" (yes, it's based off a book that came out in 1997 before it was made into a film) by Arthur Golden. Hence, why Madonna is sporting the geisha look in this video.

According to a behind-the-scenes interview with Entertainment Tonight, Madonna stated that the inspiration behind the video was from the 1997 Arthur Golden novel Memoirs of a Geisha. She later stated, "The whole idea of a geisha is a straight metaphor for being an entertainer because, on one hand you're privileged to be a geisha, but on the other hand you're a prisoner [...]" Madonna choreographed her own moves in the video, since she "[did not] like how other people say how I should move, I'm my own best choreographer."[59] In an interview with American broadcaster and journalist Larry King, Madonna commented about the geisha depiction, "[...] there was a character in the book called Hatsumomo and she's been my muse for the past six months. So I don't know."[60] She stated that her daughter, at the time, called Madonna the novel's character, Hatsumomo, which the singer found intriguing yet bizarre.[59] The red kimono that Madonna wore in the music video was created by French fashion designer Jean-Paul Gaultier.[1] Her main look for the video consisted of heavy eye make-up and a pale face with dark, straight hair, as well as a pair red ankle high boots to accompany the kimono. The kimono was tailored by a large red leather belt.[61] Madonna wore the kimono again at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards, which she performed at. The look was then re-designed by Gaultier and the Italian fashion duo Dean and Dan Caten for Madonna's 2001 Drowned World Tour.[62] The visual for "Nothing Really Matters" premiered on MTV on February 13, 1999.[63] The video can be found on Madonna's 1999 compilation, The Video Collection 93:99

Again, I love how you guys are educating yourselves on The Queen. The thing that’s great about the world we live in today is, you can Google her in order to understand the meaning of not just hers but anyone’s video. Continue onward with your education & you will also understand that Britney & all the other young girls took notes from Madonna. Here’s my suggestion, check out her Like A Virgin performance on the very first MTV Video awards...before the song even came out! FYI, she said in an interview some years ago( you will see when & if you watch the video) when she was rolling on the floor, that happened because her shoe came off & she didn’t know what to do to get it back on. That performance has become iconic.

QUICK DECODING OF THE MEANING OF THIS VIDEO: 1) Motivation behind it: Madonna is telling us how her view on the meaning of life changed once she gave birth to her daughter. She realized that true happiness and true love is about caring and self sacrificing for OTHERS. 2) The Black Kimono: In Japanese culture black represents mourning, sadness or something sinister, which is how Madonna describes the interior life of people who only think and care about themselves. Notice how in those scenes she is at the CENTER and always being TAKEN CARE OF. (Ego Centric). 3) The bag of Water: How much would you pay to have a plastic bag full of water? Not much right? Well that bag represents the many superficial and even WORTHLESS things society in general obsesses over (Fame, Money, Material things, etc) We see her in the Black Kimono doing that, but we also see the folks dreseed in white doing the same. That is the society we live in. Zombie like creatures all going after the same worthless things. 4) The Red Kimono: In Japan RED represents, passion, good energy, power and vitality. This is why in the video, Madonna appears in the red dress as soon as the song hit the lyrics: "Nothing Really Matters, Love is all we need", representing how Madonna feels about life now that she has come to her new realization. At the time Madonna was also studying Kabala. A jewish philosophy that teaches certain principles to live your life by, one of them being: To Give is better than to Receive ("Everyting I GIVE you, all COMES BACK to me) Hope that helps!

Hey just to let you know, that’s actually not what Kabbalah teaches. At the very very basic level, We as humans are a vessel meant to receive while Light (God, energy, etc) is all giving and is love.
@walterhigo7658
@walterhigo7658 4 жыл бұрын
@@mariahg6146 I said it was ONE teaching (of MANY), not the whole philosophy. And this is one thing she explained in one of her interviews at the time. I know nothing about Kabala, and I'm not pretending I do, but what you just explained to me, DOES NOT contradict what I had previously posted. When you receive the 'Light' you become a more CARING / GIVING person. That is like SPIRITUALITY 101.

The song was critically appreciated for its lyrical content and composition, and was declared by reviewers as one of Madonna's most personal efforts; however, some critics felt it was tepid and lacklustre compared to other tracks from Ray of Light. In the United States, the song remains Madonna's lowest entry on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 93. Its low chart peak was due to lack of airplay and the delay in releasing it in CD single formats, to which the singer's fans protested against Warner Bros. The song became her 23rd number one on the US Dance Club Songs chart, reaching the top spot in Hungary and Spain, and entering the top ten in countries including Canada, Finland, Iceland, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland and the United Kingdom. An accompanying music video was directed by Swedish director Johan Renck, and was released on February 13, 1999. Inspired by Arthur Golden's 1997 novel Memoirs of a Geisha, the video portrays Madonna as a geisha, dancing in a small room. The red kimono worn by her in the video was designed by French fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier. It was worn by the singer during her performance of the song at the 41st Annual Grammy Awards. "Nothing Really Matters" is cited as one of Madonna's most underrated singles to date. The costume and music video has been cited by journalist and academics as one of Madonna's most iconic and best re-inventions.

She wrote that song after Lourdes ( her daughter ) was born. Hence the lyrics nothing really matters. She was inspired by the Memories of Geisha, trapped like a prisoner while earned being a geisha, aka female entertainer in the 90s. Bags of water show reflect having her daughter: water being a healing element in every culture and religion.

The song and video came from the Ray Of Light era. As with all of Madonna’s vids, they are multi layered. A lot of the inspiration from this video came from her love of the story, Memoirs Of A Geisha, which is about women that are held in high regard but also trapped in their worlds, something that Madonna identities with. There was also a lot of elements featured in the Ray Of Light videos, especially this one. You see her cradling the bag of water like a baby and water is essential to life. Then you see the other people in the video as a representation of media or chaos and they fighting with the bag of water, like they’re trying to destroy what’s essential to life. Definitely a lot to see.

I am a huge Madonna fan, and I see where ppl are coming from when they pit Gaga against her....Madonna is an icon of her time, her music is empowering,sexually liberating and challenges norms... so did Gaga... doing so she became one of the pop figure of this decade...different between them is just the time...let's just say, she continued the torch dedicated to the new generation...also hope we don't conclude Madonna's unique artistry based solely on this video...this song was done in the 90s, like the dude said, it was a well representation of the music scene at the time,electronica...and guess what, one of the biggest artist at that time exploring this genre was BJORK...I bet there was some of her influence in this "artistic" music video...even Gaga's early career questioned me wether she was going for a mainstream Bjork persona...u look up Bjork and u will find the most avant garde, artsy videos that surpasses both Gaga & Madonna...aesthetically...but music wise they are on a different path
@Brunosampaiobr

@@kindarabaay2425 I have 37 years old and I agree with you in many points, especially because I'm living throughout Madonna, Bjork and Gaga careers. I'm a big Madonna fan since 92, and in 95 Bjork collaborated with Madonna because Madonna asked for it, not because Bjork wanted it first, so yes, Bjork inspired Madonna at that time, as Madonna inspired Gaga later. And I believe that Madonna recognizes Gaga as a talented artist because she really is, that's a truth. I don't know why people still don't accept that they are great artists, Madonna is a legend and it's normal that she will inspire many artists, as the same way that Madonna was inspired by Bowie, Aretha, punk scene... It's time for us to enjoy the music of every artist that we like and stop talking about who is better, who is the most succesfull, who did this, who did that... Madonna is the best of all time, imo, including male artists, but Gaga is the best new artist, comparing to Beyoncé, Rihanna, Taylor, Katy... She is amazing.

"Hints of Gaga..." Really? These reactions lack sufficient contextual knowledge. They're not ready for Madonna's existential lyrics, her symbolic imagery, and her specific references to art and literature. While the title may point to a more nihilistic view, the lyrics for the song are quite direct in their hopeful articulation of something new. Madonna explains the type of person she was (see: Keep It Together) then goes on to say how the birth of her daughter shifted her priorities and gave her a new perspective on life. One that now includes a greater appreciation for the less tangible things in life and an exploration of the metaphysical. KIT: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYisgYRvg72nf5I

Aside from the message, the video's visual design incorporates all four elements: Earth (the wooden backgrounds, Air (Floating People), Fire (The guy spinning the flames) and Water (the bags of water)

Everything in this video (like Bedtime Story and many other Madonna videos) is symbolic. Also the 'mental' part. Fun fact, some of the effects were later used on the Matrix. (just like the Vogue dresses of the MTV music awards in 1990 were used for the movie Dangerous Liaisons)

Rain might be a good video to do next. It's a slower ballad but one of her most stunning videos and from earlier in her career :)

The white people are butoh dancers . Butoh is a style of post-contemporary dance originated in Japan in the 50s’ that was born as a way for Japanese artist to express deep sorrow, pain and fears. Madonna used butoh dancers to represent the pains, sorrows and jealousy that used to rule her life. Not she has changed, she is protected from them, that way you don’t see Madonna with the dancers at anytime, she is confined and taken care for along with her daughter ( the water bag) in a safe place.

The video was inspired by the best seller book "Memoirs of a gueisha". This is the song she made her first live performance at the Grammy´s.

Rumor has it she was making a play for a part in Memoirs of a Gesha movie to Steven Spielberg. Bags of water represented elements, and song inspired by the birth of her daughter.
