Lyrics:
This used to be my playground (used to be)
This used to be my childhood dream
This used to be the place I ran to
Whenever I was in need
Of a friend
Why did it have to end
And why do they always say
Don't look back
Keep your head held high
Don't ask them why
Because life is short
And before you know
You're feeling old
And your heart is breaking
Don't hold on to the past
Well that's too much to ask
[Long and movie versions only:]
Live and learn
Well the years they flew
And we never knew
We were foolish then
We would never tire
And that little fire
Is still alive in me
It will never go away
Can't say goodbye to yesterday (can't say goodbye)
No regrets
But I wish that you
Were here with me
Well then there's hope yet
I can see your face
In our secret place
You're not just a memory
Say goodbye to yesterday (the dream)
Those are words I'll never say (I'll never say)
This used to be my playground (used to be)
This used to be our pride and joy
This used to be the place we ran to
That no one in the world could dare destroy
[Short and movie versions only ending:]
This used to be our playground (used to be)
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
I wish you were standing here with me
[Movie version only ending:]
This used to be our playground (used to be)
This used to be our great escape
This used to be the place we ran to
This used to be our secret hiding place
This used to be our playground (used to be)
This used to be our childhood dream
This used to be the place we ran to
The best things in life are always free
Wishing you were here with me

I can’t tell you what this song means to me. Came out at a time when I was still young with so much promise. Now I’m 42, lost. Alone. But I play this and it takes me back to those times when I was young. Keeps me hanging on. Weird how a song can do that.

I grew up with a gang of friends on our street. We all played together-girls and boys. When we went to junior high we stopped playing together and were making new friends. But a year later I got us playing again. We all knew that this was it, that we were savoring the beauties of our childhood world, that was already almost gone.

This song takes me right back to the end of summer '92. A new girl moved into my apartment building, and invited me to a church youth group, and I couldn't come up with an excuse not to go. That night changed my life - for the first time people just accepted me, didn't make fun of me. Friends - the best things in life are always free! Flash forward 30+ years, and now I'm the church youth leader bringing together kids from many different backgrounds showing them that God loves them no matter who or what they've done. I think back fondly of Amanda and am so thankful for her and the time we had. I wish at times I could go back to our "playground" but know that time has moved on... Wishing you were here with me.

@XataTempest

I just got done transcribing the movie A League of Their Own. This was a particular favorite of mine as a kid that I would watch with my grandma. She recently passed in December of '22 and she raised me for the majority of my life, so her death hit me particularly hard. I was a little surprised when I was sent A League of Their Own for my work a couple of days ago. I hadn't seen the film in years. All I could think of was how Grandma and I used to laugh and enjoy the movie together. I got to the end of the movie and this song came on. It was always an emotional song, even back then, but now, as a 35-year-old adult, wife, and mom, and having just recently lost, essentially, my mother, it just hit so different. It hurt, but kind of in a good way. There was a lot of nostalgia behind the pain.

I remember being 12 and kids came to get me to play and I refused because I was spending time with my dad and I’m glad I chose him because I did not know how fast it would pass. I still go to the park he would take and I took my kids. I miss my childhood no one prepared me.

This song came out while I was still in high school. Now that I'm halfway thru my life, the lyrical content holds so much truth and meaning for me. It's hard to listen to it without getting emotional. I think we all wish we could go back to simpler, more innocent times.

Me too, I'm glad I'm not on my own, oh I wish I could go back and re-live those days, say hi to people long gone and just be a kid again, get called in by mum when tea was ready or when the street lights come on not when your smartphone tells you to, a mum still young and worries so that you don't have to. If any of you kids of today are reading this.....take note and don't wish it away.

I agree. It says a lot on how chart positions are overrated and they mean literally nothing. Some of Madonna's most iconic hits are "Frozen, The Power of Good-Bye, Secret, Rain, Don't Tell Me, Beautiful Stranger, La Isla Bonita, Hung Up, 4 Minutes", one would think that they are all #1s, instead they all missed the top position. This song deserves more attention.

Songs like this are why I love her music so much. You are my people. She is the untouchable "it" girl. No Miley, Gaga, or whoever can touch the authenticity and bravado that is Madonna. Some come close (Pink!), but Madonna is one of a kind. She created her own lane. She did it despite who was biting what she tossed out there. Who stood up for her when the world despised her (or the music)? She did. Madonna has balls no man can touch (even Sean Penn). I wish I'd had an ounce of the courage she had to be who she came to be.

I'm a 56 year old married man with a beautiful family. I've become successful in my field of work. I like racing, I like shooting my guns, and my favorite band is Rush. However, no matter what time of day...what day of the week...wherever I am...this song brings me to my knees! I have to struggle to compose myself when I play it at work. The song is so painful yet I cannot stop playing it. I cry like a baby when this song plays over the end credits of "A League of Their Own." Madonna has pried her way into my soul with this masterpiece. It makes me want to visit the baseball fields I played in as a youngster and drive through the parking lot of my elementary school. And, I'm melancholy, once again.

How Madonna has not won an Oscar for soundtrack songs she’s written is outrageous. I get that she was controversial and the institution didn’t wanna seem to legitimize her but her talent is colossal. She’s one of the greatest songwriters, producers, and live performers in popular music. On a side note, she won both Stephen Sondheim and Andrew Lloyd Webber the only Oscars of their careers.

My dad served in the Navy in 1943 when the women baseball teams were formed and was in the Pacific and Atlantic during WWII. We lost him 4 years ago this month. I remember him telling stories of his time in the service, as a kid and how those were happy times for him, even though we were at war. @@jasonblitz7454 Right...and she stated “Say goodbye to yesterday, those are words I’ll never say.” Somewhere in our mind the past will always remain ....we can chose to forget or not dwell in it but it comes by once in a blue moon...memory lane.

You need to reread the lyrics. The whole point of the song is she disagrees with those sentiments.

Madonna: THIS USED TO BE MY PLAYGROUND This song makes me cry, not because it makes me feel sad but because it touches my heart. I am a 54 year old man, lived with pure emotion, with the soul of a child and the mind of a wise man. This song is one of my or if not my favorite of all your Madonna songs, she is like my identity. I lived my childhood, adolescence and maturity in an amusement park: the Playcenter in São Paulo/Brazil. It was the place where I took refuge from the world, from problems, from family, it was my heaven where moments were just joy. Today this park no longer exists, even Michael Jackson himself loved to know it when he was there. This song brings me my best memories of how happy I was, how free I was, how I was simply ME. Madonna, her songs and melodies move me a lot, they were always part of my story in all good and bad times. At the end of my journey, I hope that this song will be played on the day of my departure, as it transports me to the best world, to heaven. May I shine freely in the midst of so much darkness.

This was the song that made me fall in love with Madonona....she was the most beautiful woman in my 8yr old mind. Her music taught me about expression, acceptance, and truth....she still holds a very special place in my heart :)

Yes it does, as we get older and more lonelier, this song plays so much in our heart. We reminisce about the good times, the days of joy and laughter, and fun. I grew up in Philadelphia, and I think I had the best childhood ever. If the kids today could just look into my mind and see the fun we had, the songs we had, the foods we ate, and etc. Yes, “This used to be our playground,” this song is one the best songs ever! It brings tears to my eyes no doubt, I love it.😢😢😢
