Lyrics:
My pain... is self-chosen
At least so the prophet says
I could either burn
Or cut off my pride and buy some time
A head full of lies is the weight
Tied to my waist
The river of deceit pulls down
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down
My pain... is self-chosen
At least I believe it to be
I could either drown
Or pull off my skin and swim to shore
Now I can grow a beautiful
Shell for all to see
The river of deceit pulls down
The only direction we flow is down
Down, oh down

someday we wont have to do this; there will be fun drugs with no negative consequences. It's not wrong to want to alter one's mind; just so far the only ways to do it usually turn out badly but if you look at all of human history, we are still in the primitive experimental stages of discovering and creating mind altering substances. We'll get it down eventually and life will be better.

I come to this comment section every time I’m about to cross the tracks. Addiction has had a strangle hold on me for such a long time. I lost my mother to addiction and then I began to follow her same path. Then I lost my wife because of decisions fueled by addiction. All of my pain has been self chosen and it’s too much to bear sometimes. God’s grace and knowing I’m not struggling alone is enough to get me through my roughest days. I was so lost and hopelessly drowning in the River of deceit. God’s grace finally found me and I was able to swim to shore. Thank you all for sharing your testimonies. he was 'too good' to save..but the human psyche will never register that as an answer in the 21st century. all the great or notable (or not notable) vocalists or instrumentalists delved into some drug. not everybody came out about it, but some had their bandmates come out for them. these drug users knew exactly how and why. they knew exactly when and where. because the SUBSTANCE HEIGHTENED THEM. this doesn't just apply to Rockstars, you know, so don't get prejudice on me. don't get sour on me because of an opinion. you're damned if you do, not damned if you dont. they were human beings who, at a basic level, DID NOT want to live past a certain age. they already had a branded fucking message engraved deep within their livelihoods to support this until they made their decision. they didn't wanna live past a certain age and live out the remainder or their conscious lives encapsulated within the 'getting old' syndrome which included gooey bodies, less active mentalities, prone to disease, etc. I don't fucking want that. it's unavoidable so don't try and sway me or enlighten me. shut up and let me talk cuz this is what 'Social Media' is about. then it's your turn. believe it or not, evolving (physically, mentally, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually) happens to everything that our species considers living. what a shocker hey lol. but the synopsis here is this: drugs can dominant your thinking patterns to be this way. I am a user of 'drugs'. why is it the so called creative ones who die or whatever so early? is it drugs? is it selfishness? what a stupid question..of course it is!! but it is Human Nature To Be Selfish. Let us choose. We're our own owners of Being. So live out exact and direct in correlation with your manifested Being, and make the most of this reality.

But listen, if you have never walked the road of addiction then PLEASE don't judge someone else who has. I agree 110% the world truly lost a BEAUTIFUL soul with an amazing voice.. his pain is so REAL and you can feel it.. I LOVED Layne... there will NEVER EVER be another musician with that gorgeous yet painful sound.. there needs to be more options for Addicts of all kinds.. heroin, opiates, crack, coke, meth, alcohol etc.. People don't just wake up one morning and say Hey, I think I will get strung out today n ruin my life.. I am speaking from experience.. I was an opiate addict for 6 years and my doctor was my dealer.. I had a severe back injury and seen multiple doctors for different opinions bcuz I absolutely did not want to undergo surgery.. so instead of my doctor educating me and taking other routes and exploring different options available for me, he just kept writing scripts.. before I knew it I was an addict.. I couldn't function without the meds, I would get extremely sick of I ran out and it was HORRIBLE.. I finally had to make a HUGE decision to move away from everyone I knew and loved to get myself some help. I couldn't go on like I was anymore. I was hurting my husband and children so bad that I had to do it for THEM, as well as myself. I am happy to say that 4/1/17 will be 3 years clean for me! It hasn't been easy but I have a wonderful support system, my husband, children, and a few REAL friends. I wish someone could have helped Layne.. I know that struggle and it kills me that we lost him to the addiction, he truly was AMAZING.. RIP LAYNE

Away from family and friends this song really hit home. This is how you feel when you know you have to make that decision to get your shit together or your going to die eventually, or end up in prison. 4 yrs clean now still makes me almost cry when hearing it!! A few years after I first heard this song, I read The Prophet by Khalil Gibran and realised this song was directly referring to this poem. It was such a revelation for me, as I read it, I could hear Layne’s words in my ears. And a woman spoke, saying, Tell us of Pain. And he said: Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding. Even as the stone of the fruit must break, that its heart may stand in the sun, so must you know pain. And could you keep your heart in wonder at the daily miracles of your life your pain would not seem less wondrous than your joy; And you would accept the seasons of your heart, even as you have always accepted the seasons that pass over your fields. And you would watch with serenity through the winters of your grief. Much of your pain is self-chosen. It is the bitter potion by which the physician within you heals your sick self. Therefore trust the physician, and drink his remedy in silence and tranquility: For his hand, though heavy and hard, is guided by the tender hand of the Unseen, And the cup he brings, though it burn your lips, has been fashioned of the clay which the Potter has moistened with His own sacred tears. RIP Layne Staley, 20 years since you walked this Earth but your presence is still felt.

This is a masterpiece of art. A beautiful soul and voice confessing his struggles. I have been sober for 3 years..I have lost all of my best friends. How I was left standing I don't know. Layne was a beautiful soul and so we're my friends. I wish they had the chance. But I'm glad I got this chance and I'm grateful Layne left this beautiful song for the people who can relate. It tells a beautiful story and I'm sorry if you haven't been down the dark road you just wouldn't fully understand the beauty of his confession. 3 years sober and I promise deep down I still have a deep yearning for the bliss of heroin the samething that has ripped my heart and soul and caused so much pain. Why is that? It is a river of deceit. That is Layne's same confession in this song. Much love my friends. There is another way.
