I love Mass Effect. It has the perfect mixture between the epicness of star wars and the exploration of star trek. My favorite video game EVER.

It is a good mix between the more dialogue heavy, social/political/exploration of star trek,and at the same time has some of the magick of Star wars world design with its different races

ME1 will forever be my favorite in the series. The combat wasn't the tightest, but it captured that sense of adventure far better than the other games in my opinion. Not to mention that when Shepard spoke, it was actually really unusual when the game responded for you. I also love that you decided to sit on the start screen to listen to that opening piece, called "Vigil". It's fantastic, and relaxing.

to anyone who hasn't given this series a try, do yourself a favor and start with ME1 and play through the trilogy. Ignore all the crap about the ending, and just play through and enjoy. It's an amazing trilogy, and Andromeda is sure to carry the torch.

I agree, this trilogy is one of my favorite in gaming history. I do feel that the ending of 3 is incredibly disappointing but up until the last 15 minutes of that game it was a great experience.

Mass Effect is hands down one of my favorite video game franchises. Maybe it's cuz I didn't play the original ending to Mass Effect 3 (it was patched up by then) because I thoroughly enjoyed the conclusion to 3. Two remains my favorite. I can't wait to dive back in Andromeda, though let's be realistic, EA probably will delay the crap out of it well into 2017.

***** I don't mind if an RPG turns linear, all I care about is that there's resolution, and there was. I take Mass Effect 3 as a conclusion as a whole, not just the last 10 minutes. As for the DLC, yeah bad practices, but at least it was good.

i really liked the gun play in the first Mass Effect, because even if you choose to be a bionic focused character you could still use weapons like sniper rifles... actually hitting anything with that thing was quite difficult but it was still possible and the whole overheating instead of reloading mechanic gave the shooting a new level of strategy... but of course all that was changed in the later games so they could appeal to the shooter audience as well... and all of a sudden your space gun which cannot run out of bullets has to be reloaded also i loved the Mako, yeah it handled like crap but what do you expect? its a space-offroad-tank-drop-ship thing... not a sports car

I feel like the potential issues of the Quarian design all come from the fact that the Quarians are simply a more fleshed out race, we know much more about their society than other races, and with more information, it is easier to find elements that someone will find awkward

Novaria almost feels intentional with how empty it is for me. Like an in-universe explanation is that the outposts there were meant to support a bustling population but it never took off. Then it became more secretive and access was cut off just to the absolutely essential personnel.

Another superbly constructed video. Really enjoy the blend of technical analysis and biographical material on the title, coupled with the Karakian insight & signature delivery. On the side, hoping to see another podcast posted soon, don't believe I've come across any past late November. I sincerely thank you for the content!

You've really scratched an itch with these videos that I never knew I had. With game analyses videos each creator tends to specialise, and thus focus, in a specific aspect of game development throughout each video, such as literary readings, technical discussions, or pure mechanical design. Not only do you nail all three, you also delve deep into aspects of game development that are just as important but are so often overlooked in analyses: sound design and art design. This is technically a rambling hour long commentary of a game, yet no single comment ever feels like waffle. It's all confidently delivered from an immense pool of knowledge, and to just hear someone effortlessly talk about a game for an hour while consistently applying it to real world history and science is just an absolute treat. A new favourite KZbinr for sure!

Even with all of its faults the first Mass Effect was probably the game I have enjoyed most growing up playing. I had at played through it at least 16 times, getting max level with every character. Yet every single time I played, because of the conversation options, class selection, party composition, the game felt fresh on every single playthrough. The branching aspects of the sequels made me go play again just to see what other options I could of done differently. I can hardly think of a game that drew me in and immersed me into a universe as much as Mass Effect has. The Citadel actually felt alive and not a hollow shell to get from point A to point B. That has always stuck with me. Though I have some conflicting thoughts with the action-packed theme they started going with 2 and 3, the first one will always give me a feeling of wonder and exploration that I have rarely felt with other franchises. It really does break my heart a little to hear people hate on the first one when 2 and 3 are very different games.

It saddens me when people talk about the idea of skipping the first game to play the series. While ME2 and to a lesser extent ME3 make positive overall jumps in gameplay and graphics, the original Mass Effect has the most interesting story, characters, and atmosphere. It's the most unique and interesting of the series in my opinion.

The opening music does give a sense of exploration like you said. It also sets the mood for the rest of the game. It has a somber, yet epic vibe that is fitting for such an immersive experience. The voice acting and facial expressions are amazing. I love the Paragon and Renegade dialog options which allows an NPC character to react according to past morality choices that are made by the player. The games have always had amazing looking planets and locales that you can visit. As far as the charter models are concerned they are detailed well minus the low textures that are seen on clothing or armor. For some reason that has always been a prevalent issue since the first entry. The Mass Effect franchise has been one of my favorite video game series. I have always loved the story, atmosphere, characters, dialog and the world of Mass Effect. It is interesting that Science Fiction X was originally the title that was given to the game. It is unfortunate and a shame that some members of Bioware have left the company over the past few years. I hope their departure doesn't impact the success of Mass Effect Andromeda. Thanks for another great video and God bless!

Really appreciate this video, this is one of my favourite games and I think Bioware nailed Mass Effect 1 thematically a league above 2 & 3. Unfortunately I'm compelled to nitpick. You said you're confused as to why the Quarians never settle down on a planet, but there is an explanation. Whenever the Migrant Fleet try to settle on a planet they get bullied off by the council, and some of the Quarians believe that it is only right they try to retake their home planet.
@ACGreviews
@ACGreviews 9 жыл бұрын
+ironicmuppet I should have said. It was an idiotic explanation as we know many planets are available to them with no one on that particular planet and rights for races are available for settlements.

+AngryCentaurGaming Fair response. I agree that there is certain facts about the Quarians that are not very cohesive. Although in this instance I remember Tali mentioning that Quarian immunology is inherently co-operative as opposed to adversarial. These immune systems were not very capable at handling disease and allergens, this factor is in addition to them being locked inside their suits on the ships for three centuries. Rannoch is one of the only planets that has this type of co-operative biosphere. I believe the suits symbolize the isolation of their exile. That's the reason they only desire to reclaim Rannoch; they won't feel truly at home unless they are able to shed the suits that represent all the negative feelings of not having a home.

Played all ME titles on 360, I remember ME3 multiplayer being the first time en-mass you could voice chat with other long time fans of the series, we had months and months of conversations like this video. Great times. The Mako should have been fixed, not scrapped: The fault, in my opinion was that it turned to drive in the direction of the camera as well as turning with the ACTUAL vehicle controls, negating the ability to drive safely into and out of cover to shoot enemies on your flanks. Normandy, the French one (lol) was also the allies window into, or jump off point for taking down the great evil of the day, mayhap that's an accurate interpretation of the name? Excellent video, Karak, and I'm looking forward to the follow up for the other two titles. ME is my favourite game series.

Personally I prefer the first mass effect than the other two. Besides the fact that i am an RPG guy, thus prefer the original Mass Effect RPG mechanics, I much more preferred the atmosphere and the story. Typical Hero Journey on a Sci -Fi setting but done really really right. The story in the first might be typical but it was really solid and your character had an actual ark. The 2nd had great character sub-plots but the main plot was almost not there (alongside the non-existent Shepard´s character development) and we all know what happened in the 3rd (even thought the subplots concluded amazingly in the 3rd). Also the atmosphere. The main menu theme says it all. It really had a mood of mystery and discovery. It created an awe. The sequels felt almost Bayfied. Too bombastic and blockbustery.

I prefer the second. I like the darker tone and suicide mission at the end. The combat also felt much smoother to me.

Great video. Mass Effect is the best trilogy on the last-gen for me, still wish for a remastered before Andromeda comes out. Looking forward to parts 2 and 3.

Also, a few points about mass effect (oh man this will be a long one): -That initial music when describing the mass effect? Oh man...goosebumps every single time -Why on earth did they have to dumb down the entire inventory? I couldn't understand either why they had to go with the "every single character must wear the same clothes/armour for all eternity and you can't change that". I suppose it had to make sense because they introduce characters in ME2 who needed to look cool (newsbreak, no miranda, samara, thane will ever be 1/100 as charismatic or cool as wrex in his wondrous yellow armour I found him once) but it was disappointing. -Is this the only mass effect without a sodding tutorial at the beginning? Use button x to do y, you can hide behind here, to get the weapon out click on this and that, be careful if that explodes it hurts! I mean, mass effect had a bit of tutorial as can be seen but not as super intrusive and super heavy as ME2 for instance, which was a total drag. Here you get a basic "hey, get to cover by sticking to it" followed by an "ok, it's your shit now, have a good one!". -Mako is love. I could understand why people didn't like much the underdeveloped worlds (yeah because the pathetic corridors in ME2 were that much better) but not the hate for the mako. There are I think a couple of planets which really brought the saints down from the sky from me, Eletania I think? And another one. Completely optional and just TWO, I can't remember a single other time driving around the mako made me mad instead of giddy, in a way. -Love me some Noveria...for odd reasons. We see a salarian scumbag. We also see a turian who seems a scumbag himself. People you wouldn't save from starving if you had a million bucks on yourself (how you'd walk, I don't know). Lorik Qui'in and Bel Anoleis are not that super mean badass but they're a perfect representation of the shit that is common within ALL races. I'll be honest I can't remember such types in either 2 or 3, maybe there were but they don't pop into my mind at all. -Am I the only one that had his interest (a tepid one to be honest) in star wars killed by mass effect? I suppose seeing the majestic, astounding universe bioware created absolutely made me look in a different way at the nonsensical jumble that is star wars' one. One looks believable, possible, damn plausible...the other, just a mishmash of ideas, quite a few ill-conceived, all mixed together without much thought. Now it does, to me, at any rate. -International point here: mass effect is one of the few games i've played in italian only in the past years (along with AC2 in which the english dubbing makes us italian sounds all like we talk as someone else is crushing our nuts in the meanwhile...embarassing, seriously) as the italian dubbing was excellent. ME3 had the possibility to get for free (but not Javik, right bioware?) the english dubbing and god, I couldn't really listen to it because commander Anderson has the same dubber as Julius in Saints' Row. The more I heard that voice the more I kept looking at Anderson and imagining this big bad hood gangster...I had to go back to the italian dubbing before it totally destroyed the game world for me. Just a little odd thing there. Again, thanks for checking this videogame out. Cheers!

Very cool video, Karak. My brother left on his honeymoon a few weeks ago and I used his xbox to beat mass effect for the first time. The series has been a giant hole in my gaming resume. I want to play 2 and 3 but I'm waiting for them to come to Xbox one, because save files don't transfer.

You can fix the texture streaming issues (in all 3 games) by making some INI edits to LOD Streaming settings.

+Kanno Fire Ya they can make it better but sadly don't fix it which is why bioware refused to add them in the last patches as many of those were created by our Mass Effect fan group on the official webpage. We kept asking but the .ini files can cause issues elsewhere depending on your setup sadly.

Excellent analysis! BioWare really does (usually) put great emphasis into how dialog, gameplay, and presentation flow into each other that they don't get enough credit for. AngryCentaur, your videos are a wonderful bright spot of intelligent insight while being genuinely down to Earth. Also, concerning the "dragon's teeth", I think it was more done for effect - it shows that these are the bad guys, who take innocent LIVING civilians and shove a fucking spear through their bodies to turn them into horrible abominations (visual shorthand for "these are bad guys") as well as shocking the player with the immediate sense of barbarism easily committed by these apparently detached AI enemies. With Ashley, I didn't get that her religion led to her alien-phobia (since the topics never cross over each other for her), but rather it came from a place being apart of humanity and seeing other species as untrusting towards the species. I think it's more of a prospective of "our community first, not theirs".

First off, great video as always. Would you ever consider doing a Walk the Walk using Dead Space? I feel for it's time the atmosphere and especially the sound design of the game were sublime and to this day I still regularly play it. I would love to see you dissect the technical aspects of the game
