The saddest thing in life is wasted talent, and in the case of Mafia III, wasted potential. They were on the right track in so many ways, but dropped the ball in a lot of other ways. I still really enjoy the game and can appreciate it for what it was, but with more time in the oven and a more clearly defined and focused experience, it could've been one of the all time greats.

What sucks is that it wasnt even the devs fault. They were rushed because 2k wanted their money. Just imagine what would have happened if the devs got all the time they wanted.

We've still never had anything close to an ideal urban open world that incorporates the best design choices from currently existing titles. Rockstar, Ubisoft, CDPR, etc. each have their strengths but nobody has ever compiled the best of the best in one title.

Maybe the older video had some editing and audio issues which I am cleaning up(cleaning all the walking the walks up in fact) so I am reuploading this with better audio, and mixing and some corrections as well as notes from the devs if I find them! Hey Karak, all of your videos are too notch content but your Walking the Walks are a personal favourite of mine. My daughter was born a little over a week ago, and when I'm settlling her down for sleep at night, I throw on a WtW video. By the time I hit the end, we're both ready for sleep! Watched AC Origins last night and have since downloaded it (after buying on a good sale price of course!). Looking forward to tucking into that soon. Keep up the good work!

The gameplay will disappoint. Cut scenes look beautiful and the intro is awesome. But you never feel like it's a mafia game. You don't get to take over businesses, it's the same animation for every boss. So every district has an under boss and a district boss, they all have the same animation so you see it 38 times in the game. There isn't a lot to do in the world other than the story so it's beautiful but empty. It just misses the mark, the main character is more of a hitman than a mob boss on the rise. I just really wanted it to be good and aside from the visual it just wasn't there.

For my PC brothers, be it AMD or Nvidia GPU owners: Use DXVK Async to run the game in Vulkan instead of DirectX 11. It will provide smoother frame times, less stuttering AND higher performance with better leverage of CPU resources, if you are CPU bound.

I absolutely LOVE the Walking the Walk series, and the thought you put into the nuance of things like sound design, NPC AI, and lighting. However, only narcs say "New Or-leens." A bit late to the party, but there was a location in the bayou where ther are wooden cabins and boathouses on both sides of a river that's a little community of riverfolk VERY reminiscent of the movie Mud with Matthew McConaughey. It's well hidden as you'll only see it if you go off the beaten path near a rural liquor store/clubhouse type building, but it was such a unique location. I don't remember ever doing a mission that takes you there. But if the game had an option to have purchasable living locations, that would be where I would hang my hat.

Excellent thoughts, much appreciated. I think the lighting convo at 9:20 is a bit incorrect. Most games have a mix of both dynamic and baked lighting (or "static" as you said) so it may be misleading to consider it a binary.

I enjoyed the aesthetic of this game, the time period, the music, the album cover/magazine collectables were all great for creating a vibe. What really let this game down for me was that I just felt so alone in the open world, it 'looked' lived in but it didn't 'feel' lived in, not once did I find myself intuitively going up to NPC's and seeing how they would react with me or watch NPC's from a distance as they do different things - That's a powerful feature of Rockstar games for me. Also the mission game play was repetitive as hell, I was a one Man army at all times and no one could stop me, it was just boring after a while.

As someone who just finished Mafia Definitive, never played any of them other than maybe an hour of #3 way back. The story really had me hooked up until I saw what the gameplay loop was going to be, and I dropped it, hard. But after finishing the first one I’m now burning through Mafia 2 and excited to at least experience 3’s story again and entirely. Hoping we get to see the series live on and see it’s full potential. God, Mafia 1 was amazing even today.

Even though the game was flawed I loved Mafia III. And I keep coming back to enjoy the open world from time to time. I think I just really enjoy open worlds that are set in a specific time period. So many games are either set in the future or medieval / fantasy times. And because of that I truly enjoy games that are set in recent history even more. I really hope the next GTA or Mafia game will be set in the 80's or 90's that would be such a nice change of scenery!

But in random occassional bits and days of a few hours a time. It gave me An incredible story, Fun gameplay with driving cool Cars and great soundtrack! A stealth/action take on missions that took severe trial and error, but are completely satisfaiing. In a open world game that i Found interesting, with random enemy encounters, because they respawn. There are bugs, glitches and frustrations. But the overal Fun i had was even better than GTA V gave me. I bought it on PS4 Pro, X Box One S and X, An sealed copy for PC that remains sealed. I bought it digital for the remastered Trilogy. And i bought a physical copy of the remastered Trilogy for a friend in the USA as a gift. Probably getting another copy for myself too, because i love the art. No game has given me as much of a “feeling” as this one does. Murky mystery in the bayou, swinging sixties metropolitanism in other areas, seedy yet stylish vice in the French Ward. And has the single best soundtrack ever in a game, oh my Lord. But MAN, I wish they’d done better with the mission design (so repetitive) and physics, as well as the bugs and issues described here... The narrative and world design in this game is excellent its just a shame you're forced to grind out the rackets in each district before you can get to the next story beat. They should have made that optional content.

I feel like Mafia 3 would really benefit from the manual driving mode and motorbikes like they implemented in the Mafia 1 remake.

If the game world had actual activities to partake in, that alone would bump up the replayability of the game itself. It's a gorgeous setting. Shame there's nothing to do in it.

This was the last game I ever pre-ordered. Dumped over $100 on the CE and only played a few hours of it

With a very small drag and drop file on PC you can remove almost all the grind and be able to enjoy the game more. Phenomenal music, story and very decent gunplay. I hated this game at released. I vowed to never touch it again. After the remasters of Mafia 1 and 2 I was playing through both of those and decided to give this one a shot. Ended up loving it and became my favorite of the 3 The Donovan DLC is amazing , the best dlc of any game imo.
