How is this compared to Gloomhaven?
@SoloPlaythroughs
@SoloPlaythroughs 4 жыл бұрын
MK is different than Gloomhaven on many levels. First off, each game is self-contained without a campaign mode. But, from a big picture perspective, the reason I like it a lot more is that, in MK, your character gets more powerful as a game goes on due to level ups and spell/skill/artifact/unit acquisition (mitigated only by wounds that clog up your deck, so wound management is important). In Gloomhaven, in the normal scenario, your character gets weaker and weaker and your choices as a result often get less interesting. Every game of MK feels different and epic. And there’s nothing like the feeling that comes when it all comes together and you smash a higher level city! When I win in Gloomhaven, I feel like I survive; in MK, I feel like I conquered.

@SoloPlaythroughs
@SoloPlaythroughs 4 жыл бұрын
goldensun441 I was focusing on the actually in-scenario aspect of GH. While there are ways to get cards back at times, your character starts each round with a supply of cards and items that is depleted as the scenario moves on. Every time you lose a card during a rest action (or otherwise), and every time you expend an item, you intrinsically have less options going forward. The average game of MK is much more dynamic in nature. (For what it’s worth, I think GH does a good job balancing itself against party level as you move forward in the campaign.)

Great review and perfectly sums up why this is THE BEST solo game ever- it is also my number 1. Another aspect which I particularly appreciate with this game is how things “work out”- sometimes I acquire a card or skill which I can’t see immediate use for but then it comes in at some point to save the day with a fight or conquest- in the end the way everything comes together in the finale is for me the most unique aspect of this game! Keep the great reviews coming Liz, thank you

Liz, you did a fantastic job with your overview, considering how convoluted the rulebook is. I personally have a love/hate relationship with the game (mostly love)... "hate" due to its complexity, length (I often play the Blitz scenario), and the fact that I almost always lose; however, the game is thrilling experience that I come back to over and over again, and I keep coming to the same conclusion that it is an incredibly fun game that I will never get rid of, with excellent components, art, and a captivating experience.

Even the rulebook warns you that playing with 4 players will be long, let alone 6 players! Hi Liz, I adore your content and Dice Tower contributions so thank you so much for that! I'm waiting on the Robinson Crusoe KS and anticipate that this will be the "one game I would solo for the rest of my life" like you said for Mage Knight... now, there is a lot of complexity and content in Mage Knight so do you see that I could over-commit myself if I started Mage Knight? In other words, it would be hard to dive into both games given that they provide a lot of replayability but also a steep learning curve. Do you have thoughts? May I just say it succinctly? I believe that was the best game review video I have ever seen (10/10). I would call it perfect. Ms. Davidson, that was a masterpiece, and thank you. Ironically, having said that, I am still unsure whether this game is for me. I realize the mechanisms it uses are very popular with many gamers, but I didn't hear mention of some of my own personal favorites, such as the pondering of mysteries, or the solving of riddles/puzzles of logic, employing deep deduction, etc. This sounded rather like the ultimate in what might be called 'management-strategy'. Again, for many that is their favorite species of game. I'm that odd duck that has never found it as gripping as piercing the fog of mystification with the blade of reason.

Mage Knight is definitely more replayable, and works well with more than one player... but I'd say Nemo's War has been at least as much fun for me to play solo. Robinson Crusoe arrives in a couple days. I hear that one is a brutal display. I was thinking of borrowing the game from a friend, and he has the old edition with no expansions. Is it worth it for me to borrow to see if I want to buy the Ultimate Edition for solo play, or would playing without that expansion be too much of a disservice? Yeah I had the same issues. Long setup and play time just for a one off adventure is kind of discouraging. Usually I handle these issues by having a dedicated table for a game, and just play it over a few days. But still kind of turned off since it does require a lot of attention and real-estate just to play a one off (non legacy) game. Besides Runebound 3rd ed. kind of scratches the same grand adventure itch and by the end of the game I feel completely satisfied and not burned out. I manage to deal with Gloomhaven's bulky setup and play time only because it plays as a legacy campaign that keeps evolving.

@@crushingit5128 That's funny, I'm the exact opposite! 😆 If it has a game has a lot of set up, I MUCH prefer it to be a one-shot. If it has a campaign, it better be quick or it'll become a chore after a few sessions. Eg I still love Mage Knight. But Gloomhaven became an annoyance after a dozen plays-even though I had a table amd organisation system dedicated to it. That said, I can now set up MK in less than 7mins whereas Gloomhaven has me going through folders and trays looking for specific tiles, cards, standees and other different components every game. 🙂

I see Mage Knight gets rave reviews, but after looking at a couple of your "how to solo" videos, it looks super complicated to me. Would you also recommend to a newbie? What type of people would not like this game?
@Aaackermann
@Aaackermann 4 жыл бұрын
It is a very rewarding game, as she sais (with all the leveling and the very clever decissions). BUT your concerns are not far fetched. This game is quite difficult, especially considering the rulebook which is hideous! Fortunatelly there are a lot of how to videos for beginner on the web (have a look at Boardgamegeek.com which is a cool website for boardgames where you can find videos for the games neatly collected!). If you are a beginner in boardgames this might be too much. Especially if you are playing solo and nobody can help you. On the other hand, if you play solo, nobody can rush you eather. So you can take your time. After all it is a game, and as long as you enjoy digging into the rules (which is quite honestly a huge part in boardgaming anyways! ;-) ) than you are good to go. Are you a person that can be patient with rules? Than go for it! You will love it! If this sounds intimmidating, than you might give this a pass for the moment. A very nice and easy soloplay recommendation would be "7th continent" But be warned. It is hard to get and quite expensive. If this is ok for you, than try this one first. But I think as well, that MageKnight is the BEST Sologame ever out there. Hope this helped.
@BeyondSolitaire

Liz here! I honestly would not recommend that a new gamer start with Mage Knight. Gaming is like a language-the more you play, the easier it is to recognize the same mechanisms in new games, which makes you better at learning the complicated ones. For starter gaming, I recommend quick, small box games (Orchard, Onirim, Cartographers, Friday). Once you get hooked on those, you can just go down the slippery slope...

(I) Start(ed) with Onirim and Friday. Then I added Space Hulk (hard), Sylvion, Predator Legendary, Marvel Legendary, then Castelion. Legendary has plenty of franchises at this point if deck building fits your fancy. Most of my games are all card oriented and don’t deal with dice.

This looks interesting, but if there are specific scenarios, that's a bit disappointing, as is the (apparent) fact that each time you play, you start again at the beginning. Personally, I was hoping for a game in which the story and character continue to grow and evolve each time you play. That is why I am currently being drawn toward solo RPGs like Ironsworn. And yet... I do want to have a cool board game, so I am torn. Part of me wants to pick it up, but I am concerned I'll find it's not for me.

Very different experiences. For deeper strategy, MK. For more engaging narrative and progression, Gloomhaven.

MK shines for solo. Gloomhaven shines with multiplayers. Enjoy both, love both.

I have this game and tried to slog through the rules. I've pretty much given up. I'm keeping it "just in case," but I know the likelihood of coming back it is pretty small. Bad rulebooks are a crime.

The rules are well organized and delivered well in the intro mission. That’s the best way to learn the game. Follow the tutorial mission book!

Try to consider that some people dont know anything about the game. Im missing information like is every play on its own, is it a campaign, do you keep your progression between plays, how long is a game? All things id like to know from a review. I'd actually like to hear more then 11 minutes from someone who says it is their favorite game. Please keep talking and make a 30+ min video.

First of all i want to mention that MK is my no1 favorite game too. Moreover i want to add that I have a different opinion about the most negative point of the game. Its not the rules/rulebook,... its the extremely large playing time with more than 2players. To be honest i wonder if someone has played with 5people?....and how long did it take to complete the scenario? hahahahha

I'm happy that so many enjoy this, but I have no desire to ever play it. My favorite games are thematic co-ops with fantasy my favorite theme, but nothing about this game in any playthrough I've watched (quite a few) make it feel like anything other than a puzzle with fantasy dressings. I also greatly dislike Legends of Andor for similar reasons. It's not about complexity or difficulty with the rules as I really enjoy many other 4+ complexity games as rated on BGG. I just hate games that hide unthematic gameplay under a coat of thematic paint, imo of course.

Kenny Felts it feels pretty thematic, adventurous, and epic every time I’ve played. But hey, maybe you just can’t get past the card puzzle aspect. No worries.

Most troubling thing about the game is the complexity. Definitely not for a casual gamer. It will take hours just to read through the rule book and have a basic comprehension.

Played it once, didnt really enjoy it. Between setup and the rules, it was more work than fun. So far it was $200 wasted. Play before you buy.
