I agreed with all your criticisms, except 1) The Shades of Tezla expansion was fixed in newer print (mine was perfect) and 2) with the right group, the multiplayer can be amazing- cooperative at least, I have little experience with competitive. One player needs to be a rules master, probably the owner- play a solo game or two or watch a full playthrough. My group has had multiple 8+ hour games of this thing, sometimes all at once, and the endgame fights can be absolutely insane. My favorite part about this game is you start off already feeling powerful, and at the end of the game youre flinging godlike spells, abilities, artifacts, and units at hordes of elite units. Not for the feint of heart, the rulebook is dense, but it’s incredibly rewarding and is responsible for some of my favorite moments in boardgaming.

The Ultimate Edition fixes the Tezla tokens colors mismatch. Great summary of the rules. Your bad points are legit.

Picked the Mage Knight Ultimate Edition up recently on the back of this and other reviews. You are yet again, spot on. It's a masterpiece. Only criticism. My wife has recently been awarded a PHD doctorate which is great news except, I have to call her Doctor which annoys me (a lot) and she still has no idea how to play this game. So your review is not accurate. But what a chunky, thought provoking, tricksy epic this is. I love it.

rapid response would be greatly appreciated ... but I found a complete MK bundle on a local adlisting for like $75usd ... but the Shades box is still in shrinkwrap ... which he's not sure if it'll have the rampant component issues or not. ... my question = is there a gameplay workaround for this issue IF the copy I have does have the mismatched tokens and whatnot? ... or would you still suggest I go straight for the Ultimate edition?

If you do end up with the borked Tesla components then you can contact whiz kids for replacement parts so either way you should be good to go. Obviously the replacements option would take longer but then I wouldn’t recommend chucking that in until you’re experienced anyway. Hope that helps 👍🏻

BoardGameBollocks I must admit I found Heroclix got very challenging over the years. New rules and complicated ideas that kept changing. Great minis though. The quality really improved. Thanks for your reviews. Really helpful.

Would you recommend this game to a newbie? I just started tabletop games last month, and I bought the Onirim game series (I liked it) , and the Tiny Epic Galaxy (I didn’t like it). Everybody says Mage Knight is a really great game, but I just wonder if it’s a game I’d enjoy given its complexity.

Probably not. If you do get it then watch the solo playthrough by a bloke called Ricky Royal. He does an amazing job of showing how the game works. Even then it’s a tough nut to crack. Maybe try something a bit simpler like Legends of Andor first?
