I think one of Floor's greatest strengths as a vocalist is that she has a very good understanding of how to deploy the various parts of her vocal toolkit to best perform a song, and here you noticed that with the choices she made at many points in this performance that worked around things that would be difficult for her to do with the relatively limited pure opera background she has. In contemporary and classical crossover singing where she's more comfortable, she focuses that same decision making ability on maximizing storytelling and emotional resonance to great effect, but fundamentally it's the same skill set of understanding what her voice can and cannot do and when to deploy the various things it can do.

Floor had one year of opera, one year of musical theatre and four years of the Rock Academy, a conservatory level program. She has said quite bluntly in more than one interview that she is not an opera singer and doesn't claim to be one. She can use operatic technique when called upon to do so, but I think her true strength lies in musical theatre. "Ghost Love Score" could be straight out of a musical and it's right in her wheelhouse. You made mention a few times of classical crossover. Can you please pin a comment describing what you mean. I get it as when I was young, I was an amateur classical singer, but others may not understand the reference. To an untrained ear opera, liturgical (classical) and musical theatre all sound the same. When singing in Nightwish, her breath support often draws praise from pro singers, so it's interesting to hear it critiqued from an opera perspective. As we know, it's more difficult to sing a complex phrase on a single breath than to sustain a single note for the same length of time. Go back and listen to "Shoemaker" as some of those phrases are quite difficult and she isn't running out of gas on those (at least to my ear). In this performance, being on TV in a music program, I do think she may have been feeling a bit nervous, so more tension was creeping in than otherwise would not normally be there. Not making excuses, just the reality of performing an operatic piece on a TV show without the benefit of extensive training. Hard not to be a bit tight and as we know, that affects breath support as well. There is a definite difference in the tightness of her jaw in this performance vs. when singing other genres in other situations. I've seen enough videos of her performances to say that she looked very tight and nervous in this one. I would love to hear a recording of her singing this today from her home studio. I bet we would hear a much more relaxed and refined rendition. Cheers and keep up these thorough reactions!

Bill Attercliffe Also this performance was in 2010. That is 11 years ago... Her voice has only got better since. Even though she still doesn't even like opera that much. It simply does not interest her. This performance was for a Dutch TV show who asked her to sing opera for the occasion. They knew she could probably pull it off. And she did in my opinion.
@billattercliffe86553 жыл бұрын
@@hansolo2121 Something I realized afterward is that this performance was roughly 8 years after she would have been studying at the conservatory. That's a big gap between school and performance for anyone. Imagine not having used Calculus for 8 years after university then having to use a Laplace transform to solve a complex problem.

@hansolo21213 жыл бұрын
@@theCrownofSympathy Floor said it'is more difficult for her to sing only because (1) she never really trained for it and (2) she simply never wanted to sing opera. She always wanted to sing in much more 'classical' and other metal styles. She only uses opera in small portions when it suits a song. That's why she wanted to have at leas 'some' training so she knows what she is doeing. In this way she is polar oposite to Tarja who literally only wanted to sing opera and nothing else and has been trainging for opera during all of her career. And for me still Floor does a better job than Tarja when singing opera, a style she doesn't even care for...

That being said, unlike some who might post negative comments about your opinion on Floor's voice here, I PERSONALLY absolutely respect hearing your honest unbiased opinion which is based SOLELY on your training as an Opera Singer. GREAT reaction video as always, and I'm definitely looking forward to more. I did have a suggestion for another reaction video, that being the song Hell to the Heavens by Leaves Eyes (the Official Music Video version). The ONLY reason I suggest the Official Music Video version is because while the few live versions I've seen sound like the singer is actually hitting higher notes than in the video, the video itself portrayed visually the images that the song depicted from a lyrically perspective. But even if you never do a reaction video to that song, again GREAT reaction video.

Agreed, she is incredible. The way you start your comment is as if these years can be added up. She took her classical training in which there was opera. It gave here extra capabilities but it is in no way comparable to a classical singers training, specialised for 10 or more years. And as Floor prefers to use various qualities in her singing, centered around musical theatre and metal, she isn't a high level classical performer. If she was interested she would work to improve it. But she improves things within her favorite genres and right she is!

I think you did a nice job in critiquing this. Glad you noted that Floor is not a professional opera singer, while also noting that her rendition was pretty good given that fact. I believe I read she had only about a year of schooling in opera. The *only* thing I could argue slightly is that I don't think Floor had any reverb on her mic so the comparisons with your vocals were a little bit unfair, though I also think you put the reverb on your mic to highlight the effects more so than to create that slightly unfair comparison. If that makes sense. I also don't think you needed the reverb to enhance your chops; you obviously don't and are immensely talented in your craft.

I love Floor, but I also loved your honest and constructive criticism. As said by many others here, she had limited training with opera and that was many years before she did this performance, so I'm not surprised she missed a few of the stylistic choices of opera. But of course, when doing Puccini, those are not things to ignore. But I will say one thing, this was nearly 9 years ago now, and she is constantly working to improve, so I don't think this is a good representation of her current breath support abilities.

But that's no reason give her a pass when it comes to her performing this soprano set piece of singing. I'm not a singer, but I can appreciate many nuances in it. And you sang beautifully, thank you for the reference to keep me on the map where the faltering sections were. But over all for a singer who has only taken opera as a study subject for a year, Floor isn't bad at all. In stage presentation I think she has the face of that grumpy teenager, who denied her lover threatens to throw herself from the Ponte Vecchio. Emotionally, her expression plus the song, I'm impressed!

The meaning of this programme was to bring classical music to people who are not in to it. The presentor is/was a pop discjocky who loves classical music (in his freetime) and wanted to share this love and educate the not knowers. A hard to sell format for television. One of the ihe ideas was to let singers from other genres perform classical music. Not as a pro but as, in Floors case, the metalsinger who can do more then only metal to make a bridge between genres. Nobel to try and educate the people and win them over. Floor herself was in the most challiging periode of her entire career. Fresh new with Nightwish, fresh out the burnout, in between touring. She did the classical training to learn about her voice, never to become a classical singer and after that i think she didn't practice her voice as a classical singer but as a 'modern' singer. About this she talked a lot and very realistic and interesting. Loved the interviews she did because they are so inspiring down to earth. Great reaction. As others have said, she did one year of classical education and never had the intention of singing more in the opera genre. So she does rather well whenever called upon to do the crossover classical thing. This was also a good while ago and her singing has improved over the years. The ease with which she performs Vilje Lied on Beste Zangers, being an example. Also, the consistency of the 'spin' she has on the finale to Shoemaker is an indication of her development and commitment to her voice, and the importance she places on interpretation. She is a crossover singer and exemplary in this role. By comparison, do some critiques of opera singers attempting metal, rock or pop, if you can find any worth reacting to. I watched a video of Maria Callas doing this aria and it intrigued me how individual it was and didn't fit into some restrictive, "this is how you sing opera" mode. What Floor does so well is sing beautifully - the timbre of her voice is intoxicating - and, in addition, her empathy with the song. I actually believe, from her expression, that she is a young woman pleading with her father to allow her to elope with Rinuccio and that she will, indeed, throw herself into the Arno, if she can't. I'll bet many highly-trained opera singers, while being more technically perfect, don't have the same level of believability, just as it's a stretch to believe that a middle-aged Maria Callas can convincingly carry the role. And I'm really glad that the guy in the audience that the camera spends rather too much time on, didn't end up eating Floor's liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti (or, if you prefer the superior book, a 'big Amarone'). A close call.

Hi Maggie, great and fair reaction. Honesty and putting things in perspective is all everyone can ask of you, not a lot of that going around lately and you made some good points. Floor did a good job and she'll be the first to admit she's not a full-time opera singer. Some background info from the pre performance interview.. This 2013 performance was after Floor just joined Nightwish and she was mid-tour (literally jumping on a plane to South America in the next Monday) and this was a reprisal of the same performance in the same show in 2010. There is also a video of that online and I am just curious to see if there are differences between the two performances. Floor did take some time away from singing and just when she got started again she almost immediately joined Nightwish last minute. I'm not here to make excuses, just interested to know if that factored in or if she has always performed it this way. The tv program by the way was an idea of the presenter Tijl, to introduce classical music to the general public. They purposely asked performers outside of the classical world to help with the mainstreaming. Which of course didn't work one bit...but hey nice try.

Maggie I agree with you. I am a musician who grew up on both classical as well as rock/metal genre. I spent a good portion of my life listening to a professional opera singers and yes, you're right about her technique. Floor's opera singing isn't perfect, but we can all agree that she's a great all-round singer, and she does a great job considering that she never had a 4 year training that's usually required for an opera singer to be able to perform in their fullest potential.

Thanks for your constructive critism to this performance as professional. Floor Jansen was that time very nervous. She definitely knows by herself not being an opera singer with only a few years training and the lack of necessary practicing all the time. Therefore you saw tension in her jaw movements mostly in the first half of the song and hitting not the right Italian vowels and consonants. In all the years Floor has become nevertheless very famous for her dynamic vocal energy on stage to the crowd, her voice versality and vocal range. As metal singer she is also not arrogant, continuously trying music out of her comfort zone, amongst Italian/ Old Latin/ German opera, and absolutely loved by her audience as myself.

I wonder how old is she there too cos I think she looks pretty young. It's impressive how she does dive into all these other languages. I was looking forward to you doing this one. It's fascinating what different types of music look for as far as being technically appropriate. Also I've meant to ask you forever - when you go to study opera I figure Italian lessons are part of the deal? Are you fluent in Italian or do you just memorise the words needed?

Hi Maggie !! I really appreciate your break down on this video and genre. I enjoy some Opera but I really don’t know anything about it in detail so your insights were really interesting. I find it extremely amazing that Floor sings this style so beautifully but then jumps over to the NIGHTWISH side and kills that too. Mind blowing !! I have been exposed to Opera with the Three Tenors, my favorite, and Andrea Bocelli and then a much younger singer from BGT by the name of Jonathan Antoine. I’ve watched the BGT audition a hundred times and I still get goosebumps from hearing Jonathan. I follow him to this day as a matter of fact. Thank you for the commentary! It's quite rare to have someone really dissect pieces like this and pointing out what an actual opera singer would use technically. There's another live piece you could critique too: Stabat Mater Dolorosa by Epica feat. Floor. There's also another version Epica did in 2009, but there's no video footage, just the audio (Simone as the soprano, again, and a mezzo in the alto role), and Simone also sang Ombra Mai Fu in that particular show (The Classical Conspiracy, live CD), which was before she transitioned to soprano techniques, I think. I don't know if you'd ever do those two, but I'd be curious to see what kinds of critics you might have still.

This was recorded end of 2012 or beginning of 2013. She had just (2 or 3 months) joined nightwish. Before that she had a burn out and did not sing much. That might explain the breath control issues. She normally does not have them.

@@davidbarrass5210 Maybe, but the point I tried to make, is that at that point she was unsure if she could stay with Nightwish forever or should pursue a Dutch career. Learning Finnish and Swedish and all the other life's choices can make somebody pursuing too many things at once.

Floor Jansen is the current lead singer for the Finnish Symphonic Metal band Nightwish. In this particular TV show they had singers from other musical styles singing an Opera piece. This performance is from the end of 2012 (broadcasted early 2013) when she just had replaced the previous lead singer in Nightwish during the midst of their Worldtour with only 48 hours notice). Besides the Rock Academy in the Netherlands (from which she graduated in 2003), she studied as far as I know only 1 year of Opera and Musical Theatre. Opera is not her favourite music style, and she studied it to expand her music tool box she puts to use in her own singing.

She is considered the best singer of her generation and to us in the Nightwish Army the best ever. You have a pretty voice and you are singing after Floor sings the way you think the song should be performed. Your opinion and I respect it. I would like to thank you for this reaction. It is very honest, and a process why a lot of the floor fans who try to put down TARJA are just showing their ignorance. They say that floor is better than TARJA because she can do classical or opera just as well and also the contemporary style better than TARJA. But the fact is classical is not as much of a strength for her as it is for TARJA , the same way that contemporary singing is not as much of a strength for TARJA as it is for floor. They both have a give-and-take when it comes to their strenghts, and they both dip into the other style when they see fit.

This was in the period she just "ended" her burnout and she just started at Nightwish (if you check the full version she tell that it was just a couple of weeks after she was asked to sing for Nightwish. I am not into opera and don't know anything about it, but I myself heard those things you mentioned it didn't sound bad but it sounded like it had to be different from what she was "doing". I also like your voice when you sang those parts (although I never was into Opera because for me it's to loud in many parts (I "have" hyper sensitive hearing, and some parts of opera hurts my ears, not saying because it's bad but just to piercing for my hearing).
