A day ago I watched The Charismatic Voice interview Floor (it was very long). Floor was incredibly down to earth, kind, and seems to just “go with the flow” as you mentioned in your reaction. She’s the type of person I’d be honored to have as a close friend even if she wasn’t famous.
@iainmackie642112 сағат бұрын
Absolutely the other way round. Floor was a metal singer first and then learned a bit of classical singing. Floor's classical training is way overstated - she did one year of musical theatre and opera during her studies. All of the rest is just her hard work and practice. The woman is just astonishing!
@paigefoster37516 сағат бұрын
Floor has classical training, as you can tell. Their are several opera singers who have done reactions to her, particularly Elizabeth Zhaaroff (The Charismatic Voice). She did an interview with Floor, who said that she approaches a song first from the perspective of what she'll be communicating, including characterization and particularly emotion. That's particularly important in opera, which is mostly sung in the language in which the original was written. Most audiences (at least here in the US) don't speak them and often don't know the actual lyrics, so a lot of the meaning is expressed through the delivery. Floor did a fantastic job of that with this performance.

Your comment on her attitude was spot on. I also think that Floor considers the live audience "her" audience for the time it takes her to perform. She also is famed by her (hired) band to be a perfectionist with absolute hearing, but a feast to work with as she is patient to wait for perfection, and always creates a warm, family like atmosphere around her. And above all, she will ALWAYS be prepared to perfection. She will have thoroughly thought over every note and every move she makes during her performances.

I always love your reactions on Nightwish and Floor. Floor started singing in a metalband (After Forever) when she was only 16 years old. After 2 years of experimenting with her voice, The Rock Academy in Tilburg (NL) started (1999) and to get admitted to the study, she (like others) auditionned with her band. In Rock Academy, she got in contact with a singing teacher from the conservatory (Edward Hoepelman) and after she finished Rock Academy (4 years), she studied 2 years in Conservatory in classical singing and musical theatre. So first it was Rock/Metal and then Classical. As a singing teacher herself she, later also learned how to grunt in a healthy way. Greetings from the Netherlands.

People have suggested the Floor could be an opera singer, but she has said that she's not a fan of opera at all, so performances like this are pretty rare. She's perfectly happy being a metal singer who occasionally scratches the surface of classical singing.

She isn't a trained classical singer that transformed to metal. She has been a metal singer since the age of 16, and got classical training to become a better metal singer. Floor talked in depth about how she developed her voice in her interview with the Charismatic Voice. She said that she found there was extensive knowledge of how to sing classical and opera, but very little about how to transition to pop, metal and other contemporary styles. I can't remember off the top of my head the course she took in rock/metal singing, but she did say that helped her a lot and that there should be more of it. She herself taught singing, including for harsh/growl vocals.

Something that you should know about FLOOR JANSEN. She started singing in a symphonic metal band at just 16 years old. After Forever (1995-2009). Then she created a new Progressive Metal band, ReVamp (2009-2016). In 2018 she released a personal Hard Rock project (Northward). In 2012, she was invited by Nightwish to finish their world tour, after the band's second female singer (Annete Olzon) left. In 2013 she became Nightwish's full time lead Vocalist. She is a singing teacher. She sings in Dutch, German, English, Spanish, Finnish, Swedish, Italian and Latin. She sings Heavy Metal, THrash Metal, Pop, Rock, Symphonic Metal, Aria and Opera. She even sang rap. In March 2023 she launched her first Pop solo album "Paragon". THE BEST SINGER TODAY IN THE WHOLE WORLD.

@yvonnevanwaegeningh-tiggel457713 сағат бұрын
@@bennybuffylove I'd like to add a bit of info to that if I may... because many people seem to think that anyone can growl... and most of those who start like that lose their voice after a while because they are not doing it the correct way. There's more technique behind it than you'd think at first glance. Maybe check out the interviews that Elizabeth Zharoff from The Charismatic Voice has done with Will Ramos from Lorna Shore, who does a lot of growling and screaming. They are even doing official research right now, and several singers, including Tatiana from Jinjer are taking part in that. The goal is to find out more about the technique they use and how they do it without harming (or even ruining) their voice. Very interesting subject 🙂

Whatever Floor is singing, she is always dedicated to tell the story of the song. She went to the conservatory to learn how to properly use her voice, her body, her posture to project the emotions connected to the story of a musical piece. You don't have to understand Italian to hear the desperate girl she's representing in this aria, being in love for the first time, thinking she can't live if it is without her lover. Floor only uses technique to be able to tell the story just right. Not because others find some technique is appropriate. This is what I love so much about Floor Jansen.
@AlldaylongRock10 сағат бұрын
In her Tea Time with Elizabeth Zharoff, she said something like: "Technique is just a tool. I want to tell a story while singing and will use whatever technique best fits that story and feelings" That's why she has went to cross frontiers of singing, from classical to growling. It's just a bunch of tools.

You should know by now that the goosebumps you get when hearing Floor singing are called Floorgasms. The best Floorgasms come with a watery feeling in the eyes. There is a YT reaction around (can't find it) where 4 singers are compared singing this song: 2 professional opera singers, Tarja (first NW singer) and Floor. The 2 pro singers were technically the best but emotionless. Tarja was great, but for Floor I would run to the gate to catch her.
@32a34a10 сағат бұрын
When you were talking about opera singers and how they have to project etc etc the first person I thought of was Elizabeth Zharoff aka TCV singing Martern aller arten. You can see in that performance Elizabeth is really projecting and you can see she is working hard at this performance.
@WNYretiree15 сағат бұрын
Lots of good comments here talking about Floor, her talent and her ability to communicate emotion and I agree with them all. To me, one of the most engaging things is her ability to convey emotion. She brings you into the emotional content of the song, but doesn't overdo it. The result is you believe that she is feeling what she sings, not just carefully planning out each note for the greatest emotional impact, which can appear almost programed and not real.

A progmetal song with an incredible solo of Floor inbetween. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWSQkHlvpderaqssi=Lu1DuzrdWD3K8EDo With her band Revamp (2 albums 2010-2013) she constantly switched between clean singing, grid and growls and opera within a song! First of all, a bit of contention, so I will use Floor her words: "I am classically trained, but not to a great extent". Floor disliked opera for it being too perfect. She is a perfectionist, but even she was not perfectionist enough for opera, resulting in a rejection by one of her conservatorium teachers saying "you don't have an opera voice". She also dislikes the lack of artistic freedom in opera that metal offers in spades. She went on with a (private?) teacher from the conservatorium who did Musical Theatre, stage presence and some opera with her. That all occured after Floor finished the Rock Academy. So she is originally a Rock educated singer. By her own judgement, she did not learn a lot at the Rock Academy (the school was very new at the time). Floor herself was not too enthousiatic about this performance on Dutch TV in between the world tour of Nightwish. As you asked, no, Floor does not sing pure opera anymore.

Floor is so talented singer that she can concentrate in story telling and choose witch quality of her voice suits best to a part of song she is performing. That's why it's easy to listen and watch her. We never see her struggle red-faced shortly going to faint just to hit notes bearly. World class singer like she is makes average song good, and good song magnificent. I'm so happy Nightwish got her to be their vocalist. ..Kaisa ❤

Floor is certainly not an opera singer turning metal. She started at the age of 16 with the (symphonic) metal band 'After Forever' in 1997. Later she joined the then new 'Rock Academy' and graduated in 2003. Shortly after she attended the Conservatory and did opera and music theatre for one year each. She calls herself a musical nerd, always seeking for new skills to put in her already overflowing musical toolbox.

I happened to just watch the original TV segment right before youtube recommended this reaction you posted today. (All hail the algorithm?) In the interview before, she had just gotten back from touring America with Nightwish after they parted ways with Annette. And was a few days away from flying out to start their South American tour. This was *early* 2013, she had only joined Nightwish on tour a couple months before this. (They didn't officially announce their decision to make her a permanent member until October 2013, (which was after this and after even Wacken open air 2013) but said it had already become clear that she (and Troy) were a perfect fit so they weren't going to wait until their planned 2014.) They didn't mention it in this interview, but she'd been singing in metal bands since she was 16, notably After Forever then ReVamp. (The latter of which basically folded when she left to join Nightwish.) She had some training at the dutch conservatory (like 1 year?), then joined their rock academy when it first opened. (One of the teachers she really connected with was a musical theater guy. I think she mentioned this during a Beste Zangers episode; some people have made fan-subs of those to translate the talk portions. e.g. Denise Hofs - ENG subs: Beste Zangers 2019 - Floor Jansen Episode 4) But anyway, classical wasn't her main genre. One of her bands had opened for Nightwish on a previous tour or at least in one concert. The video I watched with the interview portion is titled: Floor Jansen interview (with subtitles!) and Puccini Aria Live in Tiende van Tijl 2013-1-2 (is that what you're linking in your patreon? IMO reactions should link the original thing they're reacting to, same for any video about another video.) edit: Forgot to say, I enjoy your reactions a lot. Always appreciate hearing what exactly makes good performances good, and sharing the joy of enjoying good music.

Thank you for your insightful reaction! I grew-up with opera music as my mother was a Callas fan. Floor's version is, as we say it the Netherlands: ingetogen. (Subdued). She's setting a kind of clean referrential standard and refrains from adding all kinds of frilly show-off vocal techniques. And do not get me wrong: a referrential standard in a kind of (typical) Dutch-style of less is more approach. Flawless in simplicity. Where some singers may have used the opportunity - to perform on Dutch National TV - to go for a total I-will-show-you-how-very-good-I-am approach, Floor instead kept it all very small albeit perfect. She's nice and humble; what a gem for music in general terms.

IMO what distinguishes the classical singers from "ordinary" professional singers - with a possible exception of musical theatre singers - is the ability to engage the "classical singer's formant" in order to be heard unamplified over an orchestra. I think Floor has that ability on top of all the other techniques she has in her duffel bag. Another really enjoyable "classical" performance is Floor singing with her friend Simone Simons - of the Dutch Symphonic Metal band "Epica" - the Baroque song "Stabat Mater Dolorosa" from Pergolesi with a full orchestra. The setting was the 10th anniversary of Epica, so in front of hundreds of heavy metal fans. (the band took a break for that performance) kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6LHp3mGd6yBZsUsi=Z9sQiNK86feUc-4_

She had classical training but also she used to sing a lot in a operatic style in her first band After Forever (late 90s-2009) Of course it was with a mic but still she used that kind of tone a lot. Similar to what Tarja was doing in Nightwish around the same time. Nowadays in Nightwish she rarely uses that style anymore, except in specific songs like Shoemaker. That is purely a artistic decision from Tuomas who is not composing that way anymore.

A very interesting reaction Nick. I think metal singers are the most capable of singing opera out of all the genres. I personally prefer listening to the metal ladies singing Disney and pop over the Disney and pop singers themselves and also over the “musicals” singers. The stronger voices seem to much improve the songs. I wonder how far Floor could have reached in opera had she not preferred metal as a career (our gain of course!)?

Floor Jansen did sing Symphonic Metall since 1997, as the lead singer of After Forever until 2009, after that ReVamp and of coarse since 2012 Nightwish. So she has a carreer in Metall for over 27 years. As far I know, she did 2 years of Opera study, after the Rock Academy in the Netherlands. Greets from the Netherlands. If you want a little taste of After Forever have a listen to this single of 2007: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pInNc3ice7SGjKs

Floor would be the first to tell someone she isn't an "opera singer," however I think if she had 25 years in Opera instead of metal she would be a prima donna in the proper definition. Still, I have to say I'm glad she's metal. It suits her personality and you're right, the versatility super powers would not have manifested in opera. Female metal vocalist goat is a pretty decent outcome I'd say. 🔥🤘🔥

Finally. P.S. She only studies musical theater & opera part time for one year each. The she realized that classical singing was too limiting for her vocal abilities.

Another singer you'll want to review is Brittney Slays from her band Unleash The Archers. Unlike Floor, she's a classically trained Soprano. There's a great video of her and another gentleman doing La Traviata, which is brilliant! Like Floor, she can do rock and metal; however, I don't believe she can death-growl. Still, she's got an amazing voice. Tonight We Ride is the video you'll want to review. Great video!

Hah! Nice way to get triggered by a brilliant reaction to one of our greatest vocalists. So: "..these kids, going on talent shows.. just a gimmick". Agreed, BUT.. for another Dutch gem, Amira Willighagen, who was discovered in a talent show (Holland's got Talent). A YT self-taught "classical style" vocalist who wowed the audience as a 9yr old prodigy, singing.. (drum roll..): O Mio indeed!. This is a bit later: "Amira Willighagen - O Mio Babbino Caro - HD - André Rieu (Love in Venice) Maastricht - 2014" Enjoy! BTW: she's well-known in opera circles as a professional opera singer these days ;)

NIck, please could you react to Dame Clara Butt singing either Land of Hope and Glory in 1911, or Il Segreto from Lucretia Borgia? Her voice was huge. Sir Thomas Beecham said that "On a good day, you could hear her across the Channel." Elgar wrote Sea Pictures for her. So she was rated hugely during her career. I'd be interested to hear what you think of her technique because it's very different to the way low voices are produced today. Cheers

Floor can sing anything ... she is a goddess to me, in her musical qualities as in person. She's definitely a very, very nice and amiable person, as shown in a very moving tv show about her (kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIPUoqCXadCKf8k and have a look at her performances in the tv show Beste Zangers and be sure to catch the before and after conversations too because they tell so much about her person). Did I ever tell you that I love Floor ... ?
