I first bought Magic back in the early 90s when I was elementary school. The art got me in trouble with my parents. I started playing in middle school when I worked at a summer camp where my boss was a former judge from a world/pro tour. He showed us EDH which he called the judge's format and shared his cube which had everything from alpha and up to everything that year. What a time, we all poured on out when Hasbro took over. I love this content and everything your channel does, even the yugi stuff lol

Someone had to name drop the format in these comments! Goblins is a tier 1 deck as it adds stuff like Lackey, Matron and Ringleader to this shell. UG Madness isn’t quite as good, although Survival of the Fittest does bump it a bit, but you could build a deck very similar to the one played here very cheaply (especially if you weren’t fussy about printings or condition) and it’s a great way to get into the format.
@Nagy1989

An additional complication with the math around the Goblin deck's damage was that damage used the stack at this time in Magic. So you could block/be blocked, assign the damage, then sac that creature for damage and still have it deal the assigned combat damage. Onslaught was the first set that came out after I started to play Magic. My friend had a Goblin deck; I had a Cleric deck. We'd sometimes have games that went until decking!

I started playing in high school, with Odyssey. In 2003, I got to attend type 1 Worlds at GenCon Indy. Afterwards, I sold my Alpha Lotus... $900 was a lot back then! My favorite memory from that time period, besides my time at GenCon Indy, was release night for 8th Edition. I pulled a foil Wrath of God during the draft! It was my biggest pull I had ever had to that point. It was a gorgeous card. (I can't do the contest, so just figured I'd share here, since I'm on the other side of the ocean.)

So fun to read all the stories. Everybody has their great first pulls from a booster that stick with you forever. Mine was Shivan Dragon, which I later replaced with a beta version of the card and kept it on my wall for 10 years. The card isn't even that good, but it's iconic, just like that really cool 8th edition Wrath of God. (the art is a perfect mirror of Damnation)

So much nostalgia in this one! Blue/Green madness was the only one of those pro tour decks I ever owned. My first magic deck ever was a 7th edition goblins precon, so goblins have always had a special place in my heart. I ended up using a lot of the cards in Frank's deck.

Im not surprised that you didn't cover it in this video, but something that was different about the rules at the time these decks were played, was that damage used the stack. This actually made the Goblin Bidding deck much stronger at the time as it could block then put damage on the stack, amd THEN start sacrificing goblins to ping opponent's face or creatures for damage. #valuetown

The UG madness deck was also surprisingly affordable, it had almost no rares outside the manabase. And Goblin Bidding being still in Standard when Skullclamp was printed allowed it to go even more bonkers, even if clamp was more famous for the elfball and affinity decks it enabled.

I own a copy of that Wolfgang Eder Goblin Bidding deck and having casually played it extensively for years, I can say Frank's assessment while sideboarding concerning the number of black mana sources is absolutely spot on. Even with Bloodstained More and Shadowblood Ridge, the deck struggles to balance being a primarily red deck while needing to have 2 black mana by the time it can make 5 total mana. Modern day mana bases capable of pairing duals with fetches have us spoiled. 😂

I was playing in a JSS (Junior Super Series IIRC) tournament back in this era, and was playing mono black clerics. I had used dark supplicant to grab a Scion of Darkness and steal my opponents Goblin Sharpshooter, then proceeded to use Cabal Archon as a sac outlet to untap the sharpshooter, but in reality just using sharpshooter to kill his 1/1 Goblins was already pretty much game. I did end up using his own Sharpshooter against him for a quick lethal.

I was 13 around this time as well. I still have the Squirrel Opposition and reanimator lists from Odyssey/invasion and odyssey/onslaught respectively. But I had the tournament legal cards for u/g madness. It was impossible for me to get to a sanctioned FNM event because they were more rare, so I played at a local shop that did vintage with 9 proxies. I got wrecked but no one was happy to see a turn 3 flying 4/4, even if they were playing power 9. Vintage wasn’t quite as broken back then. Edit to add: in terms of color hosers, don’t forget about blue and red elemental blast. I saw so many at the local vintage shop.

I started playing FNM right when Odyssey came out. UG madness was the first actually good deck I made because all of the cards were pretty cheap for how effective it was. Good memories of losing a lot of matches as a young kid.

I can't believe I didn't see any of these videos until recently (people were talking about the double 5-0 Fact or Fiction bluff in the comments of a recent video) - these are FANTASTIC and I'd love to see more like them. Perhaps looking at 1994-1996 Standards could be interesting? Sure, you have the insanity of Urza block, but the fair Magic of those days was fascinating, as was the development of the modern concepts that are second nature today (like Sligh's mana curve and The Deck's removal/stabilization/draw which pioneered the modern "answer everything" control archetype).

Back in the day, my twin and I went to a card shop to buy some cards and there was a tournament going on. I saw the Madness deck and I watched the game and I wanted that deck so bad, it looked so fun. So I've built it and it is my pet deck.. Then Blazing rootwalla was released. So I adapted that one single card into the deck(in the old border, obviously) It's still my favorite pet deck.
