@@salamander981 I will honest though, Clough and Peter Taylor (who admired Cowans) would have got rid of Brooking (as they would have Mills, Dave Watson etc) for Hoddle and Cowans mostly on the basis they were young and upcoming talent whilst Brooking was knocking on like Keegan (though both were unlucky with injuries)...that would have been the reasoning..they would have been no room for sentiment with those two..

Bit underrated but his overall record as a manager had enough high points to show he had coaching ability better than average. Norwich City the best example of how to play football.

He probably got it and was allowed to wear it as he he had been the manager of the England youth team for a brief time in the late 70s which he was given as a sop for scandalously not getting the England senior team job in December 1977.

He wasn't a bad manager - he took over Manchester City after a ruinous reign of Malcolm Allison that all but bankrupted the club and got them to a Cup Final. Had he been given a better platform to work from he could have done quite well. I'm surprised, though, the GMOAT didn't forst address him as "Young Man...."

Excellent manager at Norwich, top them to the league cup final in 1973 and established them as a half decent First Division footballing side from 1975 till his departure to Manchester City in 1981.

Having read his auto-biog I'm reminded how hesitant he was as a manager but at least gave chances to several flare players. Not sure he made the most of the talents available at the top Midland sides then such as Villa & WBA.

Coppell was injured. maybe that was why, if Clough and Taylor had got the job in 1977 a Woodcock/Regis/Francis attacking trident might have been played up front..its not true England created nothing until Keegan and Brooking came on..overall England had four times more shots on goal than Spain...

This is what Greenwood could have done..Played Terry McDermott on the right (he was a right sided midfielder)...play Brooking behind a deeper Keegan with Francis higher up..If that was not working, sub off Brooking for Hoddle and Woodcock for Keegan at H/T...I would have dropped Wilkins..for a midfield four right to left; of McDermott/Brooking/Robson/Rix..encouraging Rix to support the front two as much as realistically possible..Howe's influence though negated him..

Not starting Keegan and Brooking was a huge mistake as soon as they came on they created chances and Keegan would have scored that header if he had started the game and got his match sharpness back.

That in my view was part of the mistake but when you bring Rix instead of Tony Morley, not use Hoddle instead of a injured Brooking its not helpful..I think starting with keegan and brooking would have made sense and if they faded due to fitness by half time quickly bring on Mariner and Francis but Hoddle should have started...Coppell was injured, so who to play down the right?

Careful though - Brian gave Nigel some VERY VERY rough treatment PRECISELY so his Forest players didn't think there was any favouritism. And it worked well for all concerned. And that famously worked very well when Nigel played elsewhere at the beginning and much later on (especially with Cloughie using the Reserves and Sunday League as part of that)...
