Chinese subtitles added! Thank you all for your support! I'm missing China so much editing these videos! A note about Shaxi: Although Shaxi is a fairly remote, tiny village, it is one that welcomes tourism. When I visit these remote, "off-the-beaten-track" places around the world, I am cautious to be mindful of the impact that tourism publicity could have on them. That is why in some of my videos to these types of places, I do not reveal the exact location. Shaxi historically made its income off the horse caravans that I talk about in the video, but now those no longer exist. As a result, Shaxi fell into decline and a lot of it was abandoned by 2003. However, it was put on the World Monument Fund’s list of 100 Most Endangered Sites in 2001, which gained it some attention with historians. In 2006, a project led by the Swiss government began, to restore Shaxi in a way that preserved its heritage and stayed true to how it looked originally. The project was a great success and was praised by UNESCO. Now the project is over, the old buildings have been restored, and tourism is slowly making its way to the town. The locals hope to attract more tourism to revive their economy. Although I wouldn't like to see Shaxi's tiny alleyways overrun with tourists (and the town is truly tiny, you can walk from one side to the other in 5-10 minutes), it is definitely worth a visit, and I hope that the town does see more visitors to help their businesses. (I was not sent here by any tourism board, or else I probably wouldn't have come into town squeezed into a hot little bus full of vegetables lol, a local recommended this place while we were in Lijiang, so we just randomly decided to go). If you want more magical tiny villages, these are 2 more videos of mine that I really like: Some of the most remote villages left in Europe: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnrFlKGrdrmYj8U Gorgeous tiny village in Pakistan: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHaxgpaof9OprcU

it is fantastic that a small, almost magical village could finally remind you of all those who were waiting for you somewhere. this village would remind everyone of their childhood, Mom and Dad and the sisters and brothers. everything is there for children: movements, dimensions, sounds, ...! it invites you to take your time and remember all the things you would tend to forget in the noise and speed of big cities! You had an eminently positive reaction when you got home afterwards!

One thing I didn't like about this video...that it ended. First of all it's so refreshing to see China painted in a positive light these days, as it has taken an absolute beating the past several months, while there are still such wonderful people and places overlooked in the madness. Sure does seem like a fairy tale. There are so many videos of yours Jordan, that left me feeling the same sentiment. (that ice city, Pakistan and others). I defy anyone whose heart doesn't sing after watching. The stunning beauty, serenity, your genuine reactions (the sweet thumbnail alone draws you in)...all that and more, make for an absolutely uplifting, soul-stirring, touching viewing experience. Here's hoping that the struggling village's encouraging signs you point out lead to a rebirth. I am rooting for Shaxi!

This was truly wonderful. I think I saw your original video about this little hamlet, and it was wonderful, but you turned it into art with this one. Your gentle voice, along with the gorgeous village scenes, was very calming. This is the kind of film I'd love to see in a theater, lying back in the seat in darkness, enveloped by the scenery and your commentary. This is the China I want to see and experience - 'small' China: the little houses tended to for generations, the happy people untainted by big city life, the gardens and old stone bridges. Exotic and remote, but you finally brought it home, literally - I love the message at the end, that a faraway place with an exotic culture is really closer to our hearts than we think, triggering sweet memories that make us think of home. I think that really shows that we are all the same, wherever we're from and whatever language we speak. We all want to connect. Even the doggie who extended her paw in friendship. Such details, free from political biases and business interests, comprise the real world we live in. My experience tells me that travel can be difficult from time to time but in the end it's always ever so rewarding. Through connecting with locals, discovering nuances of different cultures' unique beauty and reevaluation of myths/misinformation, travelers are of irreplaceable significance for establishing understanding and trust between peoples. With respect, empathy, and willingness to acknowledge one's own ignorance, would mutual appreciation across cultures emerge.

Touching, I think you've found the meaning of travel. Nostalgia for family, love for homeland, respect for history and ancestors, these are Chinese beliefs.

Thank you for this beautiful video and your great personality. I work in the mental health field and maybe I'm reading too much into it, but you strike me as someone who has or is struggling with depression and maybe something else. Just want you to know you're not alone and if you're ever struggling, to seek help because it would be a shame for someone like you to succumb to depression and end things. Specially during this time. Anyway, I'm sorry if I'm reading too much into it and I'm wrong, but this goes for everyone. I encourage everyone to get a warm line if they need it during this time or other helpful services for our mental health. Sorry for the odd comment and thank you for this wonderful video. I might go to china once this thing blows over now, thanks to your videos! :)
