Magician reacts to Jandro 2019 perform his mentalism card magic act where has a prediction waiting inside of his lego box for Penn and Teller on their show Penn & Teller Fool Us 2019. Jandro is from Spain and invented this magic effect, and has a very funny magic act. Overall a great performance for sure! This is Fool Us Season 6 2019. What did you think about this magic effect?

Your explanation fails because Penn would have seen the clay opening as soon as the top part of the lego box was broken open. Also where would the rest of the cards be hidden? Perhaps in the table, but again the timing was not sufficient to take it, insert it in the box, and seal the clay.

@@brianbatie6650 The clay seems to have a flap on one end that opens like a hinge, which I believe he could seal before the lego box was open. And he found out the value of the card early on, so it seems to me he had a lot of time to get everything in place. But we each have our own opinions :)

Jason Parker Whoever is commenting that his hand in the box was misdirection or that it wasn’t doing the dirty work, name another way he could have done that. I still have no guesses esp bc they don’t just give away Fool Us Prizes except for David Ross. If you want a Fool Us Trophy like Ross, write books that revolutionize a form of magic to the point where it teaches other magicians for generations

Guys, you are missing two main points in my opinion: 1) Penn&Teller know magic way more than we do. They know when a magician uses slight of hand, they know in which situation they could of and they know which objects could have been involved. Also, they were on stage, so they clearly saw his arm moving or not. 2) The point of the show is not saying "he used slight of hand", it is to exactly tell how the truck was done, if they do not get it, then they are fooled. It is obvious that something was hidden somewhere and some hand movement was made but if they do not know how then they are fooled, as easy as that. This is in my opinion one of the most amzing tricks ever done on the show and the reaction of Penn&Teller prove that

they are also staring at him very closely through the entire thing and only have one chance. expert youtube magicians in the comments slow everything down and rewatch it over and over again and still come to wrong conclusions most of the time.

Yes, people (lay people) guess, because that's what the show is about. Some magicians welcome this because they can improve their routines, others are offended and work with producers to edit the recording of their performance so that their bad or transparent strokes are removed. Then, of course, "bold" theories emerge. This trick was done very well, without editing. Of course, a layman does not know that the alpha-omega of this trick is to break the box with a baseball bat and create chaos. How to deliver the correct card to the mailbox is a trivial matter. The alarm is not for mechanical contact, but for a photocell ... No less, often a layman is influenced by Penna's statement, who certainly knew how the trick was done. However, it is necessary to meet the requirements of producers due to the attractiveness of the show. It's bad, but it's happening. In short, the format of the show is about guessing the method, even at home in front of the television. Bad judgments by lay spectators are also fun, and that's part of it. It increases the attractiveness of the show and the magician has feedback that he did well if he did not reduce to video editing. If you just want to enjoy magic and uncritically receive everything that the TV screen provides, programs such as AGT or BGT are produced for such undemanding viewers.

I got the feeling that they expected a switch later on and once Penn realized that there was no switch upon opening the box, it was impossible to backtrack to where the trick actually happened. Imagine this: I am going to tell you 100 statements, one of which is a lie. Nothing seems suspicious so you expect the lie to come later. Once my 100th statement is a clear truth, you can't just go back easily and pick the likeliest lie, but you might get a good guess if you recorded me saying them and rewind, but I would've fooled you nevertheless.

​@@DL-kc8fc Nah the crux of this trick is how he obtained the correct card. All that "break the box with a baseball bat and create chaos" achieved in my opinion is let everyone know that the box has nothing to hide and it's too late to try and catch him redhanded

I agree with the hand in the box being there to plant the card. The only thing I would point out is that Penn & Teller had a much better view than the TV audience. Both were looking directly down into the box before, during, and after the smashing. The scene you laid out would require a tremendous amount of dexterity in a very confined space with two skilled magicians watching his forearm and wrist intently. Maybe they thought if he could pull that off without either of them noticing, he deserved it?

I don't think he could have selected a card, without looking, while talking to them and being all excited like that, and put the rest away, all while his hand was in the box. im 99 percent sure i have that alarm actually, looks just like mine and it don't react to light, its just a magnet, cheap ass door alarm lmao, i think he lied and he did use a force kinda, the orientation of the box does not support him sliding a card in, you would see a slit, and if he opened it the clay would be streched on the side or the alarm would have went, plus there was a damn key and they could see the box in front of them, i think it was a force 10 of 10, only reason he didn't give them any options to switch anything is because I think you got it right knowing what color teller would choose, presenting which suits he did first and such

Look at him squirm around between them during the selection and the magic wand joke. He could be shuffling a deck in that box and nobody would be able to tell. I'm not impressed with the illusion but he has skills at misdirection. He has a huge prop box with plenty of space. All he needs is compartments for the cards inside the box that look like toy bricks, he counts the ordered cards in the suit box to get the selected card. He already has the box with a gap in the construction with the clay peeled back. He slips the card int he gap without every opening the box or messing with the pi-pi alarm and he smooths the clay shut over the box.

Could he be holding an index attached to a cord, which was then pulled up his sleeve at the same time that he takes out the baseball bat? When he repeats "2", it looks as though he is counting through the index -- which might explain why the card was bent: he pulled it free with only one hand). The card was stuck under the edge of the wooden box, as if it had been pushed in from outside, and the clay looked like it had been freshly crimped along that same edge. Both Penn and Teller were distracted from looking at his arm while Penn was juggling the baseball bat, you don't need that much range of motion to crimp some clay, and he moved around enough to disguise any minor movements of his arm anyway.

Penn said it himself it's different to watch magic tricks live than in a video where you can pause it and watch it again, maybe that's why they got fooled that fast :)

@@billrundell2097 Penn stated during Kostya Kimlet's first appearance that he's easily fooled. Paraphrasing a bit: "It's easy to fool the big dumb guy! 75% of the acts fool me! That don't mean jack!!" Of course, that means they have to fool Teller, who is little smart guy. Didn't help that Teller was as flummoxed as Penn.

Alberto Yaconi I’ve had that at my disposal for a while and still have no clue about some of the most iconic parts of Eric Chien’s Ribbon Act. The ribbon cutting the card into a quarter piece. Then pulls ribbon back and it’s restored. He has that gimmicked card that is half red/half blue only this one does it on on the long side of the card. Yeah. Slow mo hasn’t helped. But Penn is 100% right. Add Juan Tamariz and you have an instant classic. Tamariz is one of my favorite magicians mainly bc he’s one of the GOAT’s in card magic. He’s given back to the magic community for so long through books, DVD’s, instant downloads, etc. Also - Tamariz helped Siegfried Tiebler fool them. He did a fully self working card trick that was invented by Tamariz. He’s a legend!

What do you mean it was a great explanation, and good inference from how the magician was acting. You wanna know which fingers he used to pick up the card or the x,y coordinates of the box inside the lego 😂

I think it's safe to say he fooled everyone. If you just say he did it in some way, the goal of the show is that whether you can trick penn and teller on how your magic trick work, mechanisms of your props and all that. But the fact that penn and teller had a close look at the box, the clay and everything and still couldn't figure it out exactly how he did it, it was just rightful that they gave him the trophy. Specially ballsy with how you do it under their noses, who has been doing magic for ages and basically has mastered magic at a certain level.

P&T have done versions of the “object in an impossible place” trick. But they always handle the props through the (almost) very end. I think they assumed he would do the same, so when he gave them the clay block to open, they realized the magic had already been done and they missed it. Also, the show might have edited out a little bit of deliberation on stage.

Well he essentially still did handle the object for the entire trick. He had his hand in the box and on the clay block the entire time while choices were being made so he could’ve been doing something in there to that clay block and box inside that we couldn’t see

I've been to one of these shows back in 2019, wasn't Jandro but they edit out a ton. Sometimes Penn and Teller deliberate for 30~ minutes with each other, the judges in their ear, etc.

Since no one seems to have come up with how the trick was performed exactly, I'd say he fooled us. It's easy to theorize how it was done, even with a hand in the box, which is visible in the opening shot as he comes onstage, but theory is not practice, and if Penn and Teller were genuinely fooled in the moment, who are we to nay say their conclusion?

A year old, I know, but I disagree with this logic. I would say that guessing that he stashed and index somewhere in the construction, if true (which it has to be) is good enough to say that this isn’t a fooler.

@@collinsmcrae It would be stupid for them to just say, "yeah it's slight of hand, he did something in that box, he had cards stashed somewhere", well no shit, that's the obvious part. The thing with this trick is that no one knows HOW exactly he does that: where were the cards? How did he get rid of the rest of them? Are they in the table? or in his sleeve? That box seems pretty tight, was the box opened from the very beggining and he closed it after introducing the card, or did he snuck in the card some other way? All that while he let Penn destroy the whole box thoroughly looking for the cards, and with a very entertaining show that was a very good distraction. It clearly wasn't done in the way they were expecting in the moment. If the only thing you have is a generalistic guess of how it could have been done, then it is a fooler.

@@collinsmcrae Indeed. The illusion is based on the premis it's the same box in Spain and the box is not gimmicked in any way. If you measure the box you can see easily there is room for 40 cards in the base. It would be easy to have 4 stacks inside the base, pick the right one and count out to the right card then conceal the rest in the base. On another note, if it was a free selection in Spain, didn't he limit the number between 1 and 10? Why couldn't a picture card be selected? In the past, P&T would say "Can I examine the lego house?" and if the answer was no, a guess of "You got shit happening in that box" was enough to say "Not a fooler". Am I right?

I don't know, it looked like Penn was deliberately smashing in a way to look for hidden cards. Another thing is that with the way the show works, usually P&T give themselves only one guess on how the trick was done, and if they're wrong it's considered a fooler. It clearly wasn't done in the way they were expecting, so they probably just gave him the trophy for that alone.

Yeah, they have not seen him remove the extra cards and they probably have not found a way how he got the card into the box either... that probably counted as fooler for them, they might try some wild guesses but I do not think that would be in the spirit of the show, they really were fooled.

I wonder if the perspective of the cameras makes the trick seem more explainable than it really is. Looking back at some of the closer shots of the table after Penn finished breaking the block, there doesn't seem to be that much of the base left on the table. At 9:23 Penn even hits one of the larger base pieces again after it fell on the floor. I agree Jandro must have gotten the card into the inner box while he had his hand in the Legos, but I think the fooling part may be that even with (mostly) free reign to smash the Legos, a very close perspective, and everything after that point being entirely in Penn's hands, they didn't know where the card came from.

Love this trick and love the comedy and delivery of Jandro the magician. If we had to think of this as a puzzle then we can assume a few things. First, his hand is in the lego box for a reason. Second he has a deck of cards in the box sorted by suit, and by number. When teller choses a suit, the rest are nullified and put away. Then Penn chooses 2 flip to 2 and omit the rest. The clay box has an opening to allow the card to be slotted in, which can be smudged after insertion. This is plasticine not clay so it is still soft. The remaining cards are hidden up sleeve or similar...and voila it doesn’t seem that unplausible. But that is one guess... and a plausible one at that. What do you guys think? Also I’m almost certain since when Penn takes box, you can notice that the box is not sealed uniformly all around, You can see when Penn takes the box there is a kind of lip that has been pressed together. I would conclude that it was open at one point allowing a card to slide in. The box can remain closed as the gap between the lid and the rest of the box is enough for a card to slide in easily. I’m pretty convinced this is how the trick was done. :) But not to take away form the amazingness and comic delivery of this trick.

The box has three sides where the space between the lid and the box is obstructed in some way (lock, sensor, rear hinges), and one side that is not obstructed at all. If you watch carefully as Penn takes the clay off you can see that the side that is not obstructed is also the side where the clay is not perfectly smooth, but rather forms a flap that appears to have been simply pressed together. He had to have slid the card in under the lid from that side and then pressed it closed before giving the bat to Penn, which makes his method of storing the cards and selecting the correct one the only real mystery.

I think that they were expecting him to palm a card and put it in the box while he opened it or something like that, that's why Penn says "you're gonna let me open it?" because he didn't really expect the card to be in the box yet. They know how he did the trick now for sure but I think he really fooled them in that moment

I think you're right for the most part. The only different thought I have is that he sleeved the cards. I also bet you're right about Penn and Teller being on stage actually made it harder for them to process the trick. We take for granted that our cozy, home view with the ability to pause and rewind is a far cry from the in-person experience.

They have to explain how it's done exactly. Even if there is one element they don't get, they will be "fooled". So, your explanation won't cut it. You would have to just take a guess at it, which is what they would have to do as well, and that's sort of unfair because that's just random luck at that point. The truth was... they didn't know, and neither do you. So, he's a fooler.

"They have to explain how it's done exactly". Nah, they have to explain the idea behind the trick. They usually talk in "codes", so they do not give details most of time. If the magician is not satisfied with the explanation, he/she will say they are wrong or that they should give more details. And that happens quite often. "You would have to just take a guess at it". That's what they do most of time though. Sometimes they get it right. Sometimes they don't get it right. While he had his hand hidden, he chose the card, placed it inside the box through an entrance on the side of the box, and closed it... This is a perfect and acceptable explanation. They don't need to provide details on what the secret entry looks like or how the card selection was done (because obviously there are dozens of different ways to do this), they just have to guess the concept behind the trick.

But for this one, they could have figured all of that out, but they still missed the sleight of hand where he got rid of the rest of the cards. They can’t just say “sleight of hand” in that case, they need to catch it. They were right up there with him and watching him the whole time, so they didn’t see it and assumed the switch would happen at the end (which is why Penn was so surprised when he was allowed to open it).

One of the most entertaining magic acts I´ve seen in a long time! Perhaps more standup comedy than magic but even the trick is pretty darn hard to explain. My best guess is that it took some engineering, mechanics and electronics to pull this off. Many possible ways to do this. All of them complex. At least they are in my head.. ;) But this just makes this magic trick soo good. When a trick makes you thing about it for hours == good. And I do agree with you that I´m a bit baffled that they got fooled without even trying to explain it. Perhaps since unless you know how its done you can only guess. I want to see more of Jandro!

I think that the reason it was given to him so quickly is because Penn was right there looking down into the box. He saw nothing that would indicate how it was done, he peeled back the clay and didn't see any way it could have been bypassed, and he opened the box and didn't see any way it could have opened (unless as you say, it started open and closed during the trick). So when he saw nothing that could explain the trick, he knew that going back to his chair and talking about it wasn't going to help. At best they could have guessed, so it was a clean Fooling.

Jandro was very entertaining! I absolutely think Penn and Teller claiming to be fooled had everything to do with them being a part of the trick and so close to it. I watched the “original” clip on Jandro’s channel and decided to see what anther magician thought about it. Viewing it the second time I believe I noticed Jandro’s sleeve on the hand inside the box had angles and flat edges. I think he had to compartments in his sleeve each holding two suits. When he was given a suit he had a way to separate it and when he was given the number he could just count. The box was already locked but there was a slot just big enough for him to slide a card in, that’s why Teller seemed to have to pry the card out a bit. The clay obviously looked like it had just been molded on one end.

Lee McElhatten I believe the cards were in the table. Tho the benefit to the sleeves would be less accessible to being searched. Penn or Teller could have searched the table. But they didn’t. My vote 🗳 in the table in the box. Because why is your hand 🖐 in there the whole time!!

I really love the tricks that involve Penn and Teller. They are great even in other people's routine. My guess is that he had the cards deployed inside the lego box in a system to easily get whatever card P&T chose, he got the card inside the box through a slit and put the rest of the cards in his sleeve. He had plenty of time to do all that. The trick is fine but the entertainment is great

YTglobersan Globersan I watched, he never has a chance to get the deck out of the box. I think the deck is still in the legos. They were fooled because they expected him to slip the card into the box when he opened the clay, but he had it in the box before the smashing, I assume the only reason his hand was still in it was to protect the deck.

Jason, you deserve much credit for how you keep your content entertaining AND balanced. When I say balanced, I mean you discuss the trick/effect in a way that is engaging for your audience as well as entertaining. You are funny and thought provoking, but balanced in that you never give the trick away. I like not knowing how it was done. I am not a magician. (My dog doesn't even confuse me for a magician! And he's..... well.. pretty stupid. He looks at my hand when I try to point and say "Get 'em, Rusty!") Anyway, point is --- I love magic; i love your channel; i love how you get me thinking w/o "giving away" stuff (like other channels; btw, why do they DO that!?); and i love that you aren't afraid to try new things for your content! This is by far the best trick on Penn & Teller. I agree with you that the only way it’s done is exactly how you describe it, but the fact that he was able to do it in a relatively short period of time and get that card inside the box and close and clay the box with one hand is amazing.

of course there is a technique to the routine, but the guys talked about the obvious that Jason was pointing out, and neither saw evidence of it. Probably even a misdirection. His animated behavior would allow him to move his hand back into his sleeve, and the jumping around at the end to hide the evidence is more likely to me =)

In an interview (in spanish) Jandro say that he have an amazing second part of the trick... but they give him the trophy so fast that he didn't have the chance to do it (he plan something for where they talk code), so he reserve that now for the live show in vegas. O.o

I'm a year late. I have to say this was an entertaining trick and I loved his personality. Going to timestamp 9:18 I can see that Penn destroyed the lego base. I mean, nothing on a magic stage is an accident. Anything and everything there is there for a purpose. That purpose may be for the presentation, may be there to distract, may be there for the mechanics of the trick itself. However, that table the legos were on is way too thin to have hidden compartments, particularly a deck of cards. Everything that happened in the trick had to have happened inside the lego box. By taking out the walls and the base that the clay box was sitting on, Penn eliminated where the cards that would be used to make the switch could be kept. The key was outside the lego box, so there obviously had to be another way to open the box. The thing is, Penn had the box and I'm sure he inspected it while Teller was handing out the key. He might have found a second way to open it but if he couldn't find the cards when he smashed the legos, and he was given control of the box and the clay it probably got both Penn and Teller wondering the method. At the 11 minute mark, Teller is telling (^_^) Penn something and he looks completely bamboozled. I'm thinking that whatever happened inside the lego box was a method they were unfamiliar with, or more likely, they were expecting one method and got misdirected by getting another. Or, maybe they gave him the trophy, walked back to their chairs, stopped, slapped their foreheads and called themselves idiots.

The only thing I can think of is that somehow there's a deck with some cards (no royalties), and he uses his tact to choose the ones they choose, then slip it over one discreet opening between the box joints, then somehow hide the deck in plain sight (the Legos help here). Cover it in clay, and then smash the box to let the card fully into the box as Penn is smashing.

100% figured it out. If you pause at the right moment you can see that his inseam of his sleeve that was inside the box is kind of flat (as if there are cards inside. Just wide enough for a deck of cards. My theory is that he had a full deck of cards in there to start, then as Teller chose a suit he slid them out onto his palm, and then up into his sleeve. Teller picked the 3rd suit, and you'll notice the flat part inside his sleeve is about a suit's worth or cards. He did a lot of comedy and stalling and I think that was him counting and sliding cards down into his palm. When Penn picked the 2, he took all those cards that he had slid into his Palm and slid them up into his sleeve. The seal on the clay wasn't solid. I think he counted the cards, slid the 2 of diamonds into the box (which was a lil busted looking on one side) and sealed the clay up all with one hand. (So so impressive) All that being said, this guy is the most ADORABLE guy I've ever seen and was super funny! BUT I'm pretty sure I got him.

I have to agree with you. His hand being in the LEGO box hidden the whole time was immediately suspicious to me. And as you surmised I’m thinking the box and clay were either already open or had a side hidden door and he had 4 sections of cards based on suite, likely embedded into the base of the LEGO structure. His presentation and distractions allows for plenty of time to move the correct card Into the box, lock it (which is an easy one handed maneuver) and fold the clay over. From then on it’s just more presentation work having Penn break the box open etc.

Ben7seven7 I think this could have been much better if the hand was not in the box the whole time. He never tried to justify it at all. The house or box is just a littéral cover for the dirty work. I LOVED the humor and presentation but to watch someone standing behind a big box without justification in an uncomfortable position makes no sense. IMHO. It not really even a puzzle much. Penn says something to the effect that this would be impossible as he began to open the clay. I don’t know why he said that. It was not what I expected to hear at that point.

If it was imbedded why would he allow Penn to destroy the structure so easily? That's what fooled him honestly that fact that he could do whatever he wanted to the Lego box and that he was given the choice to open the box. He even smacked really near his hand on the base which no one seems to point out. And found nothing.

The alarm most likely works via magnet. The system seems to be a "door break" sensor where, when the two pieces are separated, and the alarm unit loses the magnet, it goes off.. You can see the other piece of the system mounted inside the box. If he could have slid the card into the box through the slit at the side of the lid, it wouldn't have set off the alarm at all.

Here's what we know for sure : Before selection : The alarm is off, the lock is open, the box is open, the clay is pre-shaped around the box but not fully closed. He has a deck of cards available. After selection : He places the right card inside the box, turns the alarm on, closes the box, locks the lock, shapes the clay. The only real question is : wtf did he do with the deck ? I've seen people saying the cards are hidden under the lego floor, or inside the legos. I think that'd be dumb because he couldn't know how Penn would destroy the box. He HAD to take the cards out of the lego box. One way I can think of is strings. Cards are scotched or glued to a long string. He takes out the card he wants, then pulls the other cards away through his sleeve. Depending on the size of the hole in the box, maybe he could take the entire deck at once. He also could have a way to destroy the cards inside the box without letting any ashes or debris of any sort. Or maybe he drew the card himself. Maybe the peepee alarm contains something to print a card, or to destroy cards, or to hide cards. Maybe the deck is in it, actually. That would explain why the selected card was clearly folded. Anyway, I think that's the part that fooled P&T. The rest is too obvious for them to miss I think.

My best guess is tgat box is acually a machine, one guy said that he knows him personally and that he wanted to let them inspect everything, so I would bet on the box, It could explain why he did only one to then. Printer could also be the case he maybe had some little remote in his hand and then he just put it into the clay.

if you see close, is like he slip the card between the wood (stil traped in the small opening) teller have to pull the card out, in that maner he can put the card in and have the box and alarm closed and armed.

I think the cards were probably in the box to begin with. He most likely had them separated in four piles by the suits so when they picked a card, all he had to do was grab the pile of the suit they picked and then counted down to 2. After he got their card, the rest probably went up his sleeve. As for getting the card in the box, if you notice, there’s one side of the clay that has a slit in it. With it being soft clay, there’s no reason for the box to not be fully covered with the clay without there being any openings. The box either has a false bottom, or he just opened the box and put it in. The alarm actually didn’t even go off until the box was almost fully open, so he could’ve put the card in and then locked the box. I think there’s a false bottom because if you noticed, after Teller grabbed the card, Jandro immediately slammed the box closed. He didn’t want them inspecting the box. The card obviously wasn’t in the box the whole time wrapped in clay, and he gives that away because you can see the arm in the box moving the whole time. The guy is funny, but I felt like this whole trick was him just buying time. There wasn’t much magic to it in my opinion. Teller drawing the 2 of diamonds was also pointless.

That's bullshit if he had piles of cards where the fuck are the cards his arm can not move all that much inside. When Penn broke it open there are no cards inside and one thing he emphasized once he was breaking the Legos was that he didn't move his hand at all. He had his hand on the box the entire time. But definitely there has to be something he is doing he wouldn't construct that Lego box for nothing.

He used his talking skills to pull the two of diamonds from a secret compartment in the base of the leggos or table. The 'pepe alarm' is magnetic but if you look it also has the on and off switch. He found the card and simply inserted it in the box, turned the alarm on for show presence and locked it. wrapped the clay around it and the rest is history. Cheers!

I think that's close to what happened, but I think it was easier than that. I think the wood box staid locked at all times and the alarm was active at all times. Take a closer look at the inside of the wood box. See the big gap below the back wall of the box? Also note that the card was found inside the box "the wrong way" and bent, as if it had been inserted narrow-end-first through the gap under the back wall and collided with the front wall. Also notice that when Teller pulled on the card it was partially stuck in the gap and he had to yank on it, causing it to make an audible "FLICK" sound, which would not have been the case if the card had been resting in the box during the entire trip from Spain to Las Vegas. The wood box came on-stage empty, and the 2-of-diamonds was only inserted after Penn said "two". Jandro then questioned Penn, "Two?" to buy time. He then retrieved the 2-of-diamonds from some cache (hidden deck? in hand? in sleeve? in Lego box? under table?), inserted it in wood box, and crudely re-crimped the soft clay, before he allowed Penn to start "smashing". Cute trick, but didn't fool me for a second. I knew literally the very second he rolled the Lego box on-stage with his left hand inside the box how the trick worked.

i seen them do enoug that even whtn they really like the performance they dont just give away a prize. as i recall they loved 1 person somuch they said we be calling you. You didnt fool us but u did so great we still want u at our show. so no they didnt give him fool me award for that reason. they were truely stumped. they didnt see him do it. they have to know exactly how he did it, and yes penn smashed the thing up good to try and give the trick away and or figure it out. they didnt know exactly how it was done instead of trying they just gave it to him

So after hearing what you have to say, I think I know how this is done. 1. the bottom have 4 rooms, with lego this is easy. Every room have 10 cards in one suit. 2. the boks with the alarm is open, and runs on light, or only actives after the lit has closes first time. 3. the clay boks is lays open around the boks with the alarm 4.when they choose a suit, he close all the other rooms. When he gets the number he runs through the card and picks the card. He then puts it into the alarm boks, closes it with the lock. Paks the clay around. And then he has all the time in world.

Amature magician here. I think the "card in an impossible location" trick is almost always done with a palm. So the moment P&T saw the box, that's what they were assuming. So they turned their brain off a bit and were expecting it. That's why Penn was shocked to find he let Penn open the box. I think it fooled them once, but if they watched it again they would understand. I was completely fooled by this trick, but your explanation makes sense. The trick doesn't seem like it can be done any other way. As Penn said in a different video, the trick is "Too perfect."

Though if you watch the video on Mike Super's channel, you will find that Mike has edited the video so that Penn doesn't say that, probably because it makes him look really bad. That said, in that video, he doesnt actually explain what "Too perfect" is. I have seen a video of him touching on what it means but I can't remember where. Basically "too perfect" is a concept in magic theory where, if your trick is so cleanly done that there is no possible room for false explanations to exist, then the audience will pick up on it and solve your trick. Audiences are predisposed to try to understand how magic tricks are done. It's human nature. Due to this, it makes sense why magicians go out of their way to remove possible explanations, because if you remove certain plausible explanations, or "outs" as they are known, from the audience's minds, it becomes more mystifying. However there is an art to this, and if you remove every potential out for an audience member's imagination to explore, the explanation will suddenly become really obvious. E.g., if there's only one conceivable way to do a trick, that's how you did it.

All of that said, I absolutely do not think this trick was "too perfect." For a few reasons: 1: The fact that his hand was inside the box the ENTIRE time actually works to his benefit in this case. Through this alone, he is leaving a lot to the imagination. It seems to me a probable "roughing up" touch that makes the trick less perfect by putting a lot more ideas in your mind that could very well be wrong. 2: While the explanation Jason provides in this video makes sense (though I don't think it was entirely correct), there are a lot of potential explanations outside of this. That said, all of the explanations that I can come up with seem either very risky and easy to fail. I can't think of a way to consistently pull off this trick without immense risk of exposure (I particularly think this is true of Jason's "card panels in the base of the Lego box explanation). This trick is sort of the antitoo perfect trick. It's mystifying but leaves a LOT of outs. So many that I don't believe any of the outs I've imagined are correct.

Penn and Teller have that rule that they have to figure it out after watching once and I think they quickly chatted and agreed they didn't know how it was done and Penn had that box right in his hands. I'm sure they had similar ideas as you talked about but I guess if the box was sound then the whole trick was a mystery. They do love being fooled.

The suspicious part to me was the lack of discussion. Unless there was a weird camera cut there wasn't any supposition between them. Penn just looked at teller and said something like "Do you" and then he called for the trophy.

The part that fooled me was how Teller's signature magically appeared on his drawing. Okay, okay, you always call out when the producers cut the video for time and presentation, but you didn't say anything about it this time, so I had to.

I agree with you. Since the other magician picked a card randomly and no one knew what the card was but he only gave Penn a choice from 2 to 10. How did he know it wouldn't be a face card. I like your false base theory.

Penn had a choice between 1 and 10, rewatch this moment. What would the performer say if Penn chose 1? I am also very curious why face cards were not the option.

The box is a printer. There is only one card ever in the box. It has no numbers and no suit. (That's why there is no face cards. Too much to print.) He gets a two digit code to the printer and a the 2's and the suit are printed. Note that the old magician (and us) are never shown the face side of the deck. All the cards have no numbers and no suits.

@@fisherli1400 He was referring to the original selection in Spain. Of course he had the key the whole time and we were never shown the gluing of the block box so he had lots of time to do whatever he wanted in between. He also had lots of time to do whatever he wanted while he was questioning Penn about his choice of 2 and while Teller was drawing the 2 and while he was complimenting Teller on his drawing ability and asking whether P&T had a magic wand and producing his own wand and admonishing Penn not to hit him in the head. Lots and lots of time. One minute and sixteen seconds, assuming there was nothing edited out. (I watched the original video) So I think Jason got it right. In fact I came up with the same theory before he said it.

That's a really clever way to do that kind of trick, and they've busted a couple of magicians that way. One doing a similar trick Penn told him in the reveal "you couldn't have done that trick ten years ago, if you catch my meaning," and the gentleman conceded he was right, and did not get the trophy. The catch here, and the reason they gave him the trophy right away, was that THEY got to handle the clay, the box, the card. All of it. If there was any sign of a printer inside the box, they'd have busted that. Their amazement was that they were allowed to handle it all, and found the trick super clean, and "impossible" in that context. I think Jason Parker's analysis, that the guy had chambers with different cards, and a way to slip the card in while they were doing all that talking beforehand, makes more sense. After all, one key thing was that the card was a bit bent in the box. It was NOT bent when he put it in on the video, in spain. But, it was actually just a bit bent, like it had been handled by one hand, by feel alone, and was maybe a bit difficult to shove into place. There would not even really need to be a door so much as the side sliding up just the tiniest bit to allow the card to be slid into a slot. And, in fact, difficulty getting it into a slot might account for the bending. Once he takes his hand out, he gets to hold it up sideways, which he did, in order to ensure the card slides all the way out of the slot and rests on the bottom of the box. P&T don't give the trophy so much for technical things, though, as they do for a performance that astounds them and leaves them feeling excited about what they've seen. And this guy was GOOD! And did it with them on stage (guaranteed to win their love) and let THEM open the box... letting them handle any of the apparatus always impresses the hell out of them (and I understand why).

It wouldn't actually need a light sensor over a magnet (IE: the alarm doesn't matter) though because it could be the box was closed and locked from the start and the card slid in at the base. If you were worried about a gap between the wood side and bottom being noticeable, just squeeze the clay a few times near there and the pressure could close it up. ...if that makes sense...not sure I'm typing it as well as I'm thinking it. lol

Those alarms are cheap and basic. There’s the siren unit and then another smaller bit which works as a sensor. Magnet probably. Many people in Europe use them for windows or doors. When opened by the outside by burglars for example, when the 2 bits of the unit break apart the alarms sounds. Just said all this because it does seem it is as simple as that one. They didn’t even inspect the box properly, surely he had a way to slide the card inside using another opening or gap. The way the box was wrapped very suspicious. But even if they tried to guess, if there’s still those 10% they don’t know how its done - it’s a fooler

@@AveragePicker oh guys you are funny, light sensor :D. Why? Gaps in box is big enough for card to slide inside. Look closely there are definately big enough gaps beetwen cap and box and bottom too.

Note that there was an uneven gap of about 1/4" inch between the box's bottom and its back wall. Also note that the card was jammed in the crevice between the bottom of the box and the back wall, and Teller had to pull on it vigorously to dislodge it, causing it to make an audible "FLICK" noise. Also note that the forward end of the card was bent, as if it had been inserted narrow-end-first into the slot along the long back side of the box, causing it to collide with the front wall then jam in the back slot. Also notice that the clay as very soft (if that's even clay) and the back side was hastily crimped together. Based on that evidence, my guess as to how he did the trick is, there were 13 hidden compartments in the base of the big lego box -- A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K -- and each compartment had 4 cards (Spade, Club, Heart, Diamond). 2-of-diamonds was this just a matter of sticking his hand into slot 2 and grabbing 4th card down, cramming it into the bottom-rear crevice of the wooden box (badly, as it turned out), and crimping the clay with his left hand before Penn smashed the lego box. Were P&T fooled? Absolutely not. They were right there and saw everything: the hand inside the lego box, the huge gap at the bottom of the back wall of the wooden box, and the card that was bent and mutilated from being crammed into the box the wrong way. They'd have to be less than 2 years old to miss those things, as any toddler aged 2+ would have seen those things. So, nope, they weren't fooled for a picosecond; they just wanted Jandro in Vegas, so they gave him the trophy.

You're right about his hand; it's kinda suspicious how it's inside the Lego box the whole time. But, since Penn and Teller were both on stage with him, I'd have to assume if he did anything big and gross, they would have seen it . . . even if he put the card in the box and sealed the clay after their prediction (which I assume is doable in multiple ways), the tricky part would be how he GOT that card, one-handed, without doing anything big enough for them to notice. Maybe it was a card dispenser up his sleeve; there might have been a reason he limited it to only 1-10, and he could have had time to sort his card-loader by suit once Teller had made his choice.

cards were hidden in the sleeves 10:15. this is easy. to begin with all 40 cards were aranged inside the big lego blocks (so big for a small box) according to suits and numbers. after picking the right card he inserted it to a gap in the wooden box then molds the clay back and finally hid the remaining cards in his sleeves.

@@ChaosoneX please watched the movie Now you see me 2. an elastic rubber was used. in this case the end of the rubber from inside his sleeve stretched up to his fingers with a clip or a clamp to hold the cards.

The clay around the box in the setup was different to the clay in the reveal. In the setup the clay was quickly wrapped over the lid of the box and was rather lumpy. In the reveal the clay was smooth everywhere except on one end where the clay was folded over on itself. The clay was folded over the left end (face lock) and as Penn held the box for Teller to pull the card you can just make out a dark line between the side of the box and the bottom of the box. I am betting that this was an opening just big enough to slide in a card. Part of the misdirection for this slot was the rather rough construction of the box and the rather large gap between the lid and body of the box. This gap in the lid would not have worked as an insert point because of the location of the alarm unit and the card was clearly located below the magnet that triggered the alarm. A simple trap door in the table would have hidden a his cards and the banter surrounding the selection and bat would have given him plenty of time to pull the card, insert it into the box, crimp the clay then close up the trap door. It also explains why he stopped Penn from clearing any more of the Legos from the table.
