Why I’ll Never Buy A New Car

I’m only 21 but will probably never buy a new car. Here’s why:
Reasons to buy an old car
4:36 1. The price of modern cars
5:35 2. Working on new cars
7:02 3. Insurance costs on modern cars
8:01 4. Classic cars can be reliable
9:09 5. The cost of new cars
10:19 6. Cool factor
11:29 7. I think ‘old cars’ are the future
Reasons not to buy an old car
11:55 1. No airbags

all these points are solid. Old cars are just cheaper and more fun. You can also usually tell that a person with a classic drives a cool car because they love cars as opposed to a person with a modern sports car, where there's a good chance its just a status symbol.

Same, 25 and my daily is a 2002 Camry. Love the early 2000s vibes and it is on classic registration (taxes and insurance are negligible). Last year, I almost bought a brand new Civic sport hatch with a 6-speed manual but the dealer wanted 32k. I offered 28k cash and they turned my offer down. $32,000 for a near base model civic with a manual is wild. Will happily daily my Camry for the foreseeable future.

I'm a 50 year old American and I am very frugel with my money, I appreciate a young man such as yourself seeing that 50 grand is extraordinary even at your income level, just because one can squeeze out the cost doesn't mean they should, I live in an affuant area of Michigan and the ridiculous money that people spend on vehicles is mind boggling, all my cars are old, I fix them up because its a challenge and its still exponentially cheaper than a new car, insurance is cheap, and I have something unique, and I'm old so I need projects.

I daily a 1997 miata I bought it last year for £2150, I had to spend £2000 on bodywork had to get new brake discs new suspension joints and springs, new clutch etc… ended up spending about £3000 to get the car completely fixed up. So I spent about £5000-£6000 buying and fixing a 27 year old car with 123k miles. (1.8L engine btw) and it works great. No problems at all after driving 8k miles not broken down once, sailed the yearly MOT test. Never broke down since I first bought it. So I practically have a brand new NA miata for 1/6th the price of a brand new 2L ND miata. The best part is I don’t have any stupid technology in my car spying on me or just weighing me down. As someone who is now 20, (I was fresh 19 when I first bought the car), it definitely felt risky at first but it’s probably the best thing I ever done because I’ve always wanted a miata. Only thing was I always wanted an NB but recently found out they rust so much worse than the NA so settled for that instead.

my father has a Volvo 850R and had a Mercedes CLA45 AMG for around 6 years and I learned to love the Volvo over the AMG. The AMG has more power but it lacks so much in emotions as it’s a “boring” 4 cylinder, full of electronic nannies and a DCT. On the other hand I feel much more engaged with the Volvo as the 5 cylinder is much rawer and sounds so great while also having more fun with its manual transmission. And I can’t have fun with the AMG without breaking the law while the Volvo is always fun

With financing, we are merely paying the monthly "rental" and we do not really own it because we keep changing the cars and paying the new "rental" payment through financing.

If you even have a light accident in a modern car it sets all of the airbags off and then it is written off because of the massive cost of replacing all of the airbags. This whole video holds up if you need to have an enthusiast car that’s not expensive and can deal with fixing it when things go wrong. For the majority of people that want a normal A to B car, you can spend 25 to 32 grand for a good new car (higher resale) and keep it for 10 years. I’m talking about Toyota Hondas and Mazda. You could buy the same brands used if you want to save money. I can fully understand the argument for buying older cars, but there’s things to consider that enthusiast seem to just overlook. Crash Safety, reliability, basic technology. This guy clearly has a interesting lifestyle, but I highly advise the clarification of millions of people who don’t jump on the same bandwagon. It’s not because they’re idiots and like to spend money. Nice video though thank you.

My mom was trying to convince me to sell this vehicle yesterday, saying that I could put the money in spending into the purchase of a reliable newer vehicle. I look at the money I'm spending in repairs as like the purchase price of the vehicle, and in the meantime, I know I have a new battery, new rear brakes and rotors, two sets of new tires, and soon a new radiator, plus no car payment. I told my mom, thanks for the advice, but no thanks. Plus, every time I use the vehicle, I think of my dad and I say a prayer for him. This means more to me than money. Of course, I know that it'll have to go to the junk yard someday, but that day isn't now.

I financed a new car one time, and leased a new car one time. The car payment + insurance costs were far greater than what it cost me to own 2 or 3 older cars simultaneously, including what it cost me in parts to keep them on the road. I think when you start doing more of your own maintenance you'll really be stoked on just how much money you're saving over financing a new car.

German here with a c124. Bought it when i was 22 and the maintainance cost are totally bearable. Payed in TOTAL 70USD for the front brakes plus rotors and payed a friend to do it for a box of beers. They need you attention here and there but in total the repair (if you can do it by yourself) is much cheaper than having a new one. W124 were mass produced mercedes and therefore parts are totally available

I have already told people I would never buy anything past 2014. My mom’s w204 facelift has never given her a problem and she treats it like garbage. The reason he had a problem with that pre facelift w204 is because the m272 has balancing shafts that can go bad and none of it was refined. The facelift models are the most bulletproof Mercedes of that era as long as you fix the subframe and you don’t skip any maintenance intervals. I have a 2007 a4 b7 3.2 6speed and even though it scares the shit out of me with a code once in a while but it has never left me stranded. I also could change the oil easily and change spark plugs with minimal effort on that car. I do know that the timing will be expensive and a pain in the ass but besides that it will last longer than most newer cars.

Now I have had to change some parts like the waterpump and such but I have saved money through the 3 years I have had it compared to the 2007 Volvo V50 I had which there was problems with all the time and it was expensive to fix. It is much more fun to drive and old car as it is more of an experience.

Definitely understand the "never buying a new car." My dad bought his W213 new and the day it was delivered, the burmester speaker on the front driver door was not working. Had it not been for the warranty, it would have cost us a lot. The new headlights are cool but they have 80+ led's in them so the only way to fix them is replace them. Don't want to know how much thats gonna be 🤷‍♂ I'll happily keep my 05 legend running for as long as possible. Aiming for a W123 as my next purchase 👍

Whether they’re old or new, if you’re making car repairs you’re almost always replacing parts not fixing parts. At a minimum, a brake job on any car requires you to replace pads and rotors (I suppose you could “fix” your rotors by turning them but you still have to pay someone unless you own a lathe). I’m trying to think of an example of fixing a car part as opposed to replacing it. Not much is coming to mind. Maybe some vacuum, coolant, and brake lines can be “fixed” without having to replace them. I suppose on very old cars you can adjust carburetors, ignition timing, valve lash etc. which is arguably fixing not replacing. At any rate, the internet and KZbin is available to everyone so you can find out how to repair anything including older cars. It’s crazy to me that people take out huge loans on new cars and pay outrageous insurance premiums. You’re doing things the right way and the knowledge is available to you to make repairs which was not the case when I was your age. I’m 59 and I have a 2007 MB SLK 280 as my daily driver and a 1969 VW beetle convertible as my fun car. I love them both and will never sell them and I enjoy very much fixing and maintaining them.

Well done! It's just cause you're a car guy- simple as that. You'd rather have something more interesting and that has a chance of being repaired by normal means and still running for years, even if there's a bunch of small headaches along the way! You'll spend less overall as you said, especially re: insurance. And you see plenty of modern cars waiting for a tow because they've broken down. Got my kid a '99 E-Class for a first car, and I do not regret it.

Agree with everything. I've had a few cars now at 29, and the one I'm using right now is an 1984 Chevy Caprice with a diesel 350 v8. Need to fix a few things on it, but it's basically free to own. $30/month insurance (full coverage), no taxes since it's classed as a "veteran", drives smooth, it's the ONLY "american" on my parking lot with lots of neighbors diggin' it, plus parts are so cheap for old cars. Most of the time you can fix any mechanical issues yourself if you have a manual or access to the internet, or, if you have a friend with mechanical knowledge they'll happily work on old cars for a few beers in return. I live in Sweden, where there's a huge culture around american cars and older guys who knows how to fix anything are everywhere.

Hi, Czech bro here. I own a 1986 Jaguar XJ-S and a 2013 Jaguar XF. The former burns around 15 to 16l per 100 km, has no cat, no lambda probe, no nothing (it does have a Lucas EFI, which may or may not be a good thing). The latter drinks 6/100, has a cat, a DPF, and a couple emissions system maintenance bills to its name. Guess which one is allowed into low emissions zones everywhere, and which one is banned or taxed in some places.

As a 986 Boxster owner, I'd encourage you to scoop one up sooner rather than later. The 986 following is steadily growing because other cars that were previously well under their price range have crept up into Boxster territory which is pushing Boxster prices higher. Get in before they become $15-$20k cars.

Speaking purely for the domestics, cars hit a low point in the early 80's, the depth of the Malaise Era, but then got better. And from the early 80's for about 35 years they generally just kept improving. Thought that was going to continue, but nope. I spoke to a lady friend who recently bought a KIA minivan looking thing. "I like the bells and whistles" she said. Hope she likes replacing engines and electronics or being in perpetual debt too.......

This is a good philosophy. Every time I need a new (old) car I go back in time. I want to end up in the late 60s -early 80s. Cars used to be easy to repair. The engine was exposed and things were easy to reach. Now we have plastic covering everywhere. Bumper covers, Lol... This is my pet peeve. In the future our cars will probably be made entirely with plastic.

Glad to hear from an enthusiast competent 21yo about his youngtimer cars passion. Reclaimed quality is more sustainable than new stuff wasting resources for profit. New cars will make you suffer from financing, planned obsolescence, depreciation and constant beeping. Should be a warning to us, never mind the message on your car's display. 7ties and 8ies cars make affordable daily drivers, just need maintenance and can easily be fixxed, except maybe your Roller, what a shame. Safe driving is more effective than expensive tech supposedly protecting you from damage in the worst case.

I'll drive it till the engine gives out, and I'll replace it with a brand new engine, brand new tranny, redo the interior, and redo the suspension, and I'll still have less invested in it then it would cost to get a brand new truck. Also have a 1983 Jeep CJ5 that I'm replacing the engine in, and it's my project car. Old cars are the way to go. New cars are complete junk.

There is something so charismatic about older cars in general. In the age of every influencer having a wrapped Huracan or GT3 RS, I have always preferred having a well maintained older car. I would only buy a newer car if I had kids and cared about their safety. Newer supercars are just not exciting to me, they're just bragging rights for lap times and numbers. They don't feel visceral and rare like older supercars.

Also really realiable in terms of chasey, older cars feel way sturdier. And the main reason is probably styling of older cars, they are just timeless, both design and engineering. I would probably never get a new car as well! Keep the old ones alive and respect the elders!

Just the idea of losing almost half of the value of some new cars in the first three years... I've always had slightly odd older cars that nobody else wanted (Saab 900, Alfa 156 V6, Datsun Laurel, Mercedes W123 200D, Fiat Argenta, Renault Vel Satis,...). I drove them for a year or two and sold them without any loss in value. Being able to repair them myself is also very important to me. My current car (Mercedes W210 280e '98) has front and side airbags, ABS, ASR, heated seats, air conditioning,... What more could you want? In all the 40 years, the Renault was the only car that left me stranded once. For towing my car home, my daughter came along with her VW T4 TDI ( yes, she is also in the mid 20s ) . Replacing the crankshaft sensor for 25,-€ and .....done ( Btw, I will never sell the Renault Vel Satis. Look it up, I bet, you have never seen something like that )
