Yes this 1963 Home Championship match with Scotland at Wembley was goalkeeper Gordon Banks first appearence for England but it would end in a 2-1 defeat. For Banks that day he could not stop Jim Baxter from scoring two and after the match would be severely reprimand by England's suptemo Alf Ramsey just as he would be again in his second international with Brazil which ended in a 1-1 draw at Wembley. As for Scotland it was retribution for their humiliating 9-3 defeat at the same venue two years ago.Denis Law would not want to be reminded of that defeat. But this time around,a world class performance by jinky Jim Baxter that made the difference and four years later he would again tease and torment the newly crowned world champions at Wembley winning 3-2.

I was impressed with Davy Wilson's tackling for Scotland and Melia's distribution for England-knew of the other more famous ones, but these two were under-rated IMHO. Looked a strength sapping match yet all players kept up the tempo right to the end. also saw St John do a 'stepover' in the match. You could see the embryonic World Cup winners team 'spine', and I believe it was only arrogance that the Scottish administrators declined Scotland to attend. Scotland outplayed them in this game, and again were first to do so after they won it. Baxter was head and shoulders a class above in both games, and McKay a powerhouse in this.

As an Everton fan I can vouch that Bryan Douglas was a marvellous skilful and intelligent player I often saw Goodison Park. Blackburn were a top side in the late 50s early 60s. Everton signed his teammate Fred Pickering in 1964 who had become a prolific goal scorer after starting out as a full back. He scored a hat trick on his Everton and England debut. Bryan Douglas may have had a longer career if he would have moved, like John Giles did years later to display his range of passing skill's in the mid field.

The visiting team Scotland avenged their humiliating 9-3 defeat by England at the same turf two years ago with a well deserved 2-1 win at Wembley. England who were to play host to the 1966 World Cup three years later found themselves two goals to nil down at half time.aJinky Jim Baxter who four years later was to torment England again at Wembley scored a brace which included a penalty. Yes,this 1963 Home Championship match at Wembley between Scotland and England on 6 April 1963 would be fondly remembered as it was the late Gordon Bank's maiden England appearance. So were two Liverpool players Gerry Byrne and Jimmy Melia gaining their first England cap. For Gordon Banks it was an unhappy England debut as it ended in defeat.Coincidentally Banks would make his farewell England appearance also against Scotland at Hampden Park nine years later in 1972.

Great game. I never rated Ian Ure. He was always for me a clumsy player. However, the match was marred by Scotland being down to ten men for most of the match. This was an excellent Scottish side. Wow...weird rules when you get a player injured that you can't even replace him with a sub. Scotland played most of this game with 10 men (and were even down to 9 men due to St John also taking an injury) . Also the English player (who could easily have been sent off for injuring the 1st Scottish player who was so badly injured he was out of the whole game,) was allowed off the field for ages to recieve treatment in the dressing room even, then gets allowed to randomly come back on the pitch to play when he felf like it. Astonishing rules. Surely subs were allowed during matches from when football started being played in the 1800's ?
