It really helps to work with people you actually like. Ian working with Karjakin was a strange choice. I'm sure they get along well but they play completely different styles. I think going with the petroff was a poor stylistic choice. Ian got bored and tried to spice it up (game 8 Kf8) because he thought everything was equal. He was right. That move didn't lose, but it made his position much harder to play and he blundered later with b5. Karjakin would play Qe7 and make an easy draw 10/10 times

Chess is such an individual game that we forget the team work and effort behind the scenes, there's SO MANY moving parts. Who you choose to be part of your circle affects not only your breadth of knowledge re: latest opening trends and ideas but also your mood and performance. You also have to calibrate the team to YOUR individual needs and temperament. This is where Magnus's prowess in fantasy football comes into play he knows who the young talents bursting with ideas are, who is the voice of reason, who keeps the fun in line and has a rigorous work ethic etc. Also players evolve and their styles change overtime so Magnus is seeing that and making adjustments as necessary on an intuitive level. On top of that you have to make sure that the people you add to the team work well with each other. It's not just hiring a few 2700s putting them in a box, shaking it up and seeing what happens. There's an art form to this so much so that I am 100% sure this strategy of calibrating teams will be emulated in the future if it hasn't been already.

@pineapplesareyummy63522 жыл бұрын
The most revealing is actually Daniil Dubov. We knew he was Magnus' second in 2018. But here, his fellow Russian GM was playing, so I had been wondering would Daniil switch sides and use his knowledge of Magnus' play to help Nepo prepare. Now we know. Daniil is doubtless one of the crowd's favourites for his attacking chess. He actually achieved very nice victories against Magnus as we've seen on Agadmator's channel. Too bad he's just not strong enough overall to make it past the Candidates and be a credible challenger to Magnus for the Championship title.
@DMRIFAT2 жыл бұрын
In the Championship, facing magnus is not a cup of tea. Nepo is quite a good GM to face but fortunately that didn’t work out. Dubov has potential but not that potential that could possibility beat magnus in 14 games marathon. I would rather choose Alireza to face this magnus in the Championship.

@pineapplesareyummy63522 жыл бұрын
@@DMRIFAT Alireza shows excellent promise. His rating is actually higher than Magnus Carlsen at the same age. We'll have to see what happens in the next year or two, whether he can keep up his insane streak of victories against top players. Everyone will inevitably also hit bad patches, and it remains to be seen how Alireza will deal with the psychology of his game. I agree he's the most promising future candidate for World Champion. In fact, I pretty much think he will be a future World Champion. Right now, I still think Fabiano Caruana is the most robust opponent for Magnus, simply for his sheer consistency as the World #2 over many years, and that he has the tenacity and temperament to go all the way with Magnus. He fought to a draw against Magnus last time, and losing in tiebreaks was expected since faster formats are not his strong suit. Besides Caruana and Firouzja, I have Wesley So as the other credible challenger who has played great chess over the last 12 months. I believe So beat Carlsen in Fischer 960.

@@nunomacuacua yea in past world championships, but who would expect that Dubov will be on his team again, against a Russian player. I mean there are lot of people that come and go. And it’s definitely not a public knowledge before the end of the match. There are a lot of things that are not public especially before the match, I mean there is logic behind that. Did your smartass know that he actually also worked for a week or so during a camp in Spain with Giri. Probably not :)

Daniil's opening ideas make Magnus even more dangerous in the opening He is the most creative chess player ever IMO
@bbrodriguez4202 жыл бұрын
That's probably still Tal or Ivanchuk, even possibly Grischuk or Jobava but Dubov is on the same level of creativity.

Terrific team!!! Congratulations!! I was very surprised with Dubov, but a very pleasant surprise. A team does not mean it has to have top ten GMs, but a balanced one where everyone can bring something and really be part of a team. Even for just crackin the joke!

I really like Dubov's style, but unfortunately, I have very strong doubts he'd ever be playing for the WC. His best suit is apparently at Rapid time controls, where he achieves his highest ranking in this format. In classical, there are at least 20 players stronger than him. I don't see Dubov ever getting close to 2800 Elo. He's not that young.

From what I've seen from him, Laurent Fressinet is the nicest guy in the world. I love how Magnus presents 2700+ players as buddies some of whom are just here to lighten the atmosphere. Is the Jorden guy, the one who won the last wijk an see ? Looks like that team is having a great chemistry. The few who complained Dubov went against his mother Russia should realise how nationality is flexible in chess, with top players like Fabiano, Aronian & Firouzja changing countries (not to mention Kasparov, Spassky, Fischer & Alekhine).

I remember being so surprised when Jordan started breaking into 2700 but it makes sense now. Probably when they started working together. Alot of solid 2600 players break into 2700 briefly when helping title contenders. Only Nils hasn't broken 2700
