That's what always pisses me off. I am not from US, Europe or Middle East so as someone watching the events and not being part of it, it never makes sense to me how US never get any restrictions when ideally it should be under most restrictions and sanctions. 9/11 happened, the terrorists were once trained by US and ut bit them in the back, they then caused chaos in Afghanistan and couple years ago left them in lurches, disturbed the whole middle East, disturbed Iraq (I am in late 20s so basically I have read all those news happening in real time). If those sanctions and US pressure wasn't there, Russia would still top all lists. The same is with India. US is now showing lil more support to India bcz it wants to counter China and India is a big country with growing GDP and young population and is a neighbor so that's the best bait but India is a large country and isn't the same as Ukraine and also have several ideological differencrs with US and Europe for many reasons so it's not the same as dealing with European countries around Russia. It is a shame that players cannot play because of their nationality, but given the world situation right now - these players should seek to leave their country if they want to play in the West, or otherwise they are just trapped inside their sh*tty country which declares wars without any good reason.. sadly sports and sport organisations are tied to their governments and this is the way things have always been. Also I really don't see what Russian chess players or athletes in general have done wrong. Nepo, Grischuk, Dubov etc are somehow held responsible for the actions of a totalitarian regime? Also it's just inconsistent as there are many nations competing in the olypiad a.o. who are currently agressors in a war or fighting bloody civil wars, but only russia and belarus get boycots. Belarus isn't even directly at war, arguably less involved than the USA or some EU countries, just on the side of the conflict that some comittee dislikes. Totally unfair and I wish the best to all the Russian chess legends (but also youngsters) whose carreers are beïng held back currently. edit: not saying magnus should pay anyone btw

Its not that simple, Russia is trying to undo the NATO advance that was happening in the past decades, if Russia doesn't react then they will be surrounded by enemies and it just takes one false flag to "justify" a NATO operation into invading Russia, its dumb to just sit at home and say "I won't do anything bad so my enemies won't attack me", well, they can pretend like you've done something bad and invade you anyway.
