Dear Mahalia, I scketched a portrait of you during the time my heart was broken, because I wanted your song to be in my heart and mind. It helps so much to hear your voice praising God, then I know that I can praise God too in my own way. This song makes me happy when I am alone and no one is listening, then I can sing too. I have a deep appreciation for the life you had on earth and I hope the Lord is listening on the other side; I want him to tell you how important your life is even now.

I always tear up at the 1:27 mark when she starts clapping and smiling, because you can tell she knows where she’s going when she dies and that she’s looking forward to it. It started getting good to her, and for those few moments she forgot that she was in failing health. Its beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time...

A highlight for me as a young man (I’m now 80) was in 1966 during the Chicago Freedom Movement, when Dr. King came to give a public face to the effort to open up the housing market to everyone, regardless of race. At one of the rallies which would precede the marches we had into all-white neighborhoods, at a church near 71st and Ashland (I think Stroy Freeman was the pastor,) Mahalia introduced Dr. King, by singing “Joshua fit the battle of Jericho.” Such love, such energy, such passion! Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was transfixed, and glowing from ear to ear. That was a great kick-off for what became a brutal confrontation with a racist mob, which burned dozens of cars and pelted the marchers with bricks, bottles, and firecrackers. It was a testament to the organizers (which involved American Friends Service Committee - Quakers, for whom I started working the next year) and Dr. King and folks like Mother Marhalia that the marchers completely adhered to a Discipline of Nonviolence. We knew where the Source of Strength was, and God was our protector as we did a contemporary version of “Fittin’ the Battle of Jericho.” “Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, sayeth the Lord.” -David H. Finke, now in Oberlin, Ohio, and grateful for all who have guided me On the Way.

"Gonna put on my golden shoes!" (2.04). Compare with the following excerpt: 'Mahalia Jackson skipped down the dirt road after her ten-year-old brother. “Peter,” she cried, “wait for me.” Peter was on his way to the levee along the Mississippi River. He looked back at his five-year-old sister, playing along after him. “Hurry up, Halie,” he called. Mahalia didn’t really care whether she caught up with him or not. Mostly she enjoyed skipping along barefooted in the fine dirt. Gradually the dust formed a light brown coating on her feet which looked like a pair of shoes. She laughed and called to her brother, “Wait for me, Peter. Wait to see my new shoes.” ' (from Montrew Dunham, Mahalia Jackson: Gospel Singer and Civil Rights Champion, Patria Press Inc., 2003, page 1). What a passionate executant! Thanks a lot for the video.

I often find myself wondering how Mahalia felt toward the end of her life, in her final few years, when she was only in her late 50s. Her beloved Dr. King had died in 1968 and her own health was failing. Did she feel discouraged? Possibly. But she kept going on, strong in her faith in God and always wanting to uplift and encourage others through her music and ministry. Here we are, nearly four decades after her death, still being uplifted. It's as though she never really left.

@ezikah Sallie Martin is at 1:54. She was a gospel singer and an even better business woman from my understanding. She had her own group and did much work with Thomas Dorsey. There is a great video on here with the two of them in their latter years. Her voice had a gruffness to it but I love the sound. She was not a Mahalia. She was who God created her to be, Sallie Martin! Check her out on here. I think you will enjoy her.

@PennTrafford I doubt whether that Mahalia knew the impact she would make and the countless generations that have come to learn not only about how triumphs in the style of gospel, but her impact on the Civil Rights movement and her support of Dr. King. In her later life she WAS very depressed plaqued with health problems. She continued to perform, sometimes going from bed to stage and vice versa. But she went on, as this is her last performance before her death in January 27, 1972
