Maine Coon Cat Grooming - Belly Shave
Maine Coon Rocky came in today for a thorough groom through and a belly clip. Underneath his armpits, between his hind legs and right down his belly had become badly matted and were causing him some distress.
So, his entire underneath was clipped away so that his coat could start afresh and his Mum and Dad could then keep on top of it as it starts to grow back.
Our longhaired cats do take a lot of looking after, but if you make it a habit every day for just a few minutes, then it will save your cat from getting matted.

I groom my 1 year old Maine Coon male 10-15 mins per day! Short sessions just focusing on a specific area, with lots of treats. We just make sure we get the whole coat well brushed out twice a week or so. No knots! :)

This was such a fab tutorial. I have 2 maine coons that are 10 months old. One HATES being groomed while the other one is so happy to have anything. They are only 4.5kgs at the moment but stretch right across my bed. I bought a shaver the other day as Lilly needs a good belly shave as she has clumps... Poppy, who loves any attention is fluffy and no clumps. Lilly is the hunter and already bringing dead mice into the house... but she hates being groomed. One thing she does love is cuddling in the evening so I have started to gently use the comb and a brush a little at a time while talking to her softly. Thank you so much for your time and videos.

Thanks for taking your time to message me Maureen after watching Rocky's video. How lovely to have 2 Maine coons, they are still in the throws of growing, you won't have room on your bed once they are fully grown!! You are certainly doing the right thing where Lilly is concerned. Just keep at her doing the grooming every single day without fail. She will eventually appreciate your hard work although it may not feel like that for a good while. Just stay calm and keep on working on her. Don't let her frustrate you. It sounds like she has her own sassy personality so just keep doing what you're doing, firm but loving. You can always introduce some background cat reiki music (you tube) or even a Feliway plug in type device . This is the age to stay consistently grooming them because as they get larger, if not handled well, they can become very strong. I have been on the wrong end of teeth and claws with some huge Maine Coons in the past and they can be scary! But if well handled, they can be huge gentle giants. Good luck with Lilly and Poppy

His adorable my mainecoon he hates being groomed but I do it a little here and there I keep him pretty good every so often I will find little mats the size of pea or blue berry so I comb softly until it just falls off

Yes Rocky is a gorgeous cat. As for your own, keep grooming on a daily basis. I have witnessed so many cats that hate being groomed eventually start to enjoy it. If you can use the zoom groom as a treat massage style brush in between the regular combing, he will soon come around to enjoying it.

Once a long haired cat is thoroughly combed out, takes just 5 min a day to run comb/brush thru& keep from getting matted.

Yes, but many owners do not realise this. They believe that cats can look after themselves. They only realise they can't when they become matted.

Not true. I have had Maine Coons for many years and you can brush and comb them until the cows come home and they can STILL get matted. Their coats are so long and thick that it's just nearly impossible to avoid. Anyone who has owned Maine Coons understands this. However, the excessive matting on the poor cat in this video is from blatant neglect on the part of the owners and they clearly did not do any sort of grooming whatsoever. First time Maine Coon owners need to realize exactly what is involved when owning this breed as far as coat care. These are not exactly low-maintenance cats.

I have had 2 Maine coons during my adult life. We had to put one down about a year and a half ago due to cancer. He was 10 years old and we loved her so much, it took a few months to want another pet. I finally found a kitten the white cream one on my profile pic. The things I’ve discovered owning Maine coon cats is that they have to be brushed daily. Their hair is so curly , most people don’t realize just how silky soft their fur is . Especially when damp. Under the arms is a really part that you can not skip. I love the breed so much,. I love mine so much. We are still working on me doing his sanitary cut, I’ve about mastered the nail clipping but the sanitary cut is hard. When I have taken him to have it done I’m never happy with their outcome. So I must master cutting his sanitary area myself .

It is a case of grooming every day for a short time. Then increasing the grooming time more and more. Your cat will become tolerant to it and then quite enjoy it after a time. Consistency is the key with cats. I have seen many a ferocious cat who hates being groomed, turn to loving being groomed because their parents took daily action. Good luck.

Sad that people will own these magnificent cats and not groom them daily,,, if it’s done they won’t get huge matted lumps,,when the hair matts it pulls against the skin the bigger and tighter they get...I’d love a Maine..

Yes that is all it takes, daily grooming. However, people are so busy with their own lives, sometimes the pusscats get put to the bottom of the to do list!

Hiya Jess, so I had my arm protectors made by a company called CHAPS over in the US. They were made to measure. They were well worth the money. As for the matted armpits, they are the tricky part to get to. It all comes down to consistency - if you can try on a daily basis to tease the matts with your fingers whilst he is sitting near you and keep having goes at them, you should be able to loosen them enough to get the moulting comb behind them to comb out. I know it is difficult when you have a cat that hates you touching them under the belly, but it really does come down to you staying calm and persevering every single day until eventually the touching of the belly becomes part of the daily routine. I have had almost feral cats turn into absolutely loving being groomed. It comes down to a daily routine - so it just becomes part of the norm! Hope this helps.

Rocky looks just like my Tyrus. My cat is matted on the chest like this too. I'm going to order a molting comb and clippers. How do you manage to get the cat to behave for you? Mine hates being combed/brushed. I can start to brush him, and he'll bit me and walk away. And this is why his underside is matted. He just will not behave to be groomed. Please, any tips you have, I would be most grateful!

Hi Renee, Thanks for your question and for watching my channel. You are not alone, most cats do not really behave for their owners because they know they can get away with it. Even my own Burmese girl tries it on with me! (How dare she!!) Lol! It all comes down to you. You have to be firm but calming. You cannot pin a cat down, and force them as you know. It will end up very nasty if that is attempted. I know from my clients, that if their cat meows when trying to groom, they think they are hurting them and let them go. This is usually not the case. Cats know how to play us! They are like children. It all comes down to daily grooming, little and often without ever missing a day. Set yourself up a grooming area, where you take your cat to every day to be groomed. And you keep going there just for grooming, no play time, just grooming. Slowly, build up the time more and more until you cat becomes more tolerant of the combing. You can play quiet cat reiki music in the background, you can even plug in a cat stress Feliway type of thing to try and calm your cat. Most of all though, it all comes down to you and the energy you give off to your cat. Don't stress out, stay calm, handle confidently and just do small sections roughly a quarter section at a time so your cat doesn't get fed up. If you watch a few more videos, you can pick up a lot from my technique and how I hold the cats and use my body against them too.
