Majestic landscapes, meandering back roads & a national treasure. Yorkshire Dales - North Pennines.

Today you join Vet and I in Hawes ahead of another 'back roads' ride through the Yorkshire Dales and up into the North Pennines. Our ride today is a little different. We took our inspiration for this ride after watching a number of television documentaries about the life of Hannah Hauxwell, a single woman who lived and worked a dilapidated farm in Baldersdale alone.
Low Birk Hat Farm had no electricity or running water. Hannah's income was less than £300 per year in the 70s, that's around £3000 per year in today's money. Her life was a daily struggle against poverty and the harsh climate of the North Pennines.
Hannah's life was the subject to a number of television documentaries. Her stoic nature and 'make do' attitude endeared her to the nation. In this ride, we'll expore the back roads around Baldersdale to try and find some of the important sites in Hannah's life.
We'll ride up through the Dales from Hawes to Barnard Castle on some amazing roads before heading to Cotherstone and Baldersdale. The bleak lanscape was outstanding and further reinforced the difficulties Hannah must have faced during the hard winters.
We'll finish the day riding an amazing road from Hannah's farm to Brough in Cumbria. All in all the ride was about 60 miles.

A lovely effort once again. I visit the Dales and Moors every May and September. Been going up for years. You always start out in places I know well, but it's only a matter of minutes before I start to feel I've never been. I've heard of Hannah Haukswell but I haven't seen the documentary series. In the States we only get a select amount of British television. The internerd has opened things up considerably. I'll look to see if they are on KZbin. After all, I know all about Fred Dibna now. 😁And I have friends that have shown up on The Yorkshire Vet. (I stay with a friend in Thirsk when I'm up) Thanks again.

Having been born n bread in weardale my grans friend was a relative of Hannah's to say she was carefull with money mmmm 😏 lovely lady tho.... I remember the big reservoir Selset... getting built fathers idea( farmer) of a sunday trip out take us to see construction then fish n chips in Barnard castle happy days😂 ps love the giggle going for air on vstrom👌👍😊...
