My main personal vehicle right now is a Chevy Silverado half ton but a couple weeks ago the engine blew up on it and no idea what caused it. 180k miles and no oil leaks to my knowledge and 2k on an oil change. Our mechanic thinks that something just gave out in the engine but we’ve no solid proof of what happened yet. Got a ‘new’ engine on its way for the truck but I’m in a backup vehicle for now.

Love my 7.3's! Dieselsite has a kit for the fuel bowl o-rings that is good. Also, you might want to pull the HPOP and replace the seals there. I hadn't had any issues with the HP oil lines...yet. My last new vehicle was a 95 F250 with the 7.3. Had a huge leak in the valley. Took it to my local dealer several times and they kept replacing the rear main seal. Finally took it to the dealer I bought it from 45 miles away and they fixed something in the valley. Back then they were new...IDK if the old IDI's were similar or maybe the first dealer needed better help. Glad to see you got it back to running. I was expecting something like my hotshot rig...coolant in the oil. After I swapped the motor, I found a crack between cyl 1 and 3.

I gave up on my 7.3L Leaks... She gets a new gallon every 2 months or so and I I just stretch the miles on oil changes to about double.. It's getting changed all along the way anyhow.. It has 290k miles on it now.. and my ZF650 6spd and manual transfer case have never leaked a drip since I pulled it out and swapped syncro's ...... I bet I could fix my engine leaks with a turbo pedestal seals swap, and the heat exchange needs new seals too... but hey, who cares. Top her off and she'll never quit on you. lol
@133dave1333 жыл бұрын
How do you like your ZF650? I hear mixed opinions about them. Usually with bearing noise, and vibration, clutch fork issues, hard shifting syncro issues. Other people seem to never have issues. I'm wanting to install one in a 12' F450 is why I'm asking.

Since 2 of the bolts were missing from the drive shaft I wonder if whoever worked on it last failed to torque those 2 bolts, they backed out and the 2 bolts that were torque finally could not hold on and broke. Funny when you said rear main seal link I was thinking yea look at the oil but then you dashed my idea with that seepage hole.

I pulled wrenches for a living.... does not make me a good mechanic but I did have a high win record so its embarrassing to ask this question....said you were going to idle home right, all bolts out of shaft behind the transfer case. Now lets pretend for a moment that all is well, just missing four bolts. Question is could you rob a bolt from each joint and get the missing count down to one on each joint like borrowing lug nuts from other wheels when one decides for what ever reason to lose all that were on a wheel were gone so you just borrow..... would or can this be done since trip home is slow and short?

This is just a bad deal.. Looks like someone left the drive shaft bolts a little loose and they fell out... That doesn't make your truck a money pit, that just means you have bad memory and forget to tighten them down...... I usually crawl under mine with a set of wrenches when I'm greasing all the fittings.. and just go over all the drive train stuff and make sure everything is snug.. It's not a bad practice, especially if you are doing a lot of miles.... There's a reason truck drivers go over a check list before they get on the road.
