Jay is such a class act, you can tell he wanted to put the last guy that built that engine on blast. He remained calm and was speaking the truth about how it was poorly built. Keep passing your experience and knowledge around for us to use :-)

All that stuff aside, what cooked it was running without cooling flow. The actual build was insignificant to the issue of why it was tore down.

Given the thermal run away and loading the engine had when the belt came off several times, the fact it was still even running with no HG failure, no piston/wall scuffing, nor broken rings - none of the usual things that happen from an overheat i'd say it did pretty good. Assembly and machining failures aside, and are not excusable.

Crazy how this engine, despite the machining/assembly issues, was able to live long enough to perform the way it did.

I have a LS3 that has some scratches around the crank journals. I can catch the lip a bit with my fingernail. What would you recommend I do? Should I buy new, take it to a machine shop and get larger bearings to fill up the clearance, or just buy a used crank from someone online?

now that its been completely cooked (stress relieved & normalized) wouldn't it be best to cut everything to spec (line bore , deck & cylinders) in order to have a more stable and accurate block that moves around less as it heats and cools under extreme use ?

The bearing had thermal damage, but the physical size of the steel backings didn't change, so the bearing was still clamped properly in the housing bore. It wasn't until that cap was removed that the bearings were able to relax into the shrunk state a bimetal bearing wants to be in after an overheat/overload.

Hi, maybe it's an odd question, but is there any chance to build a 1000hp+ engine with a 22-28 psi of boost, for the everyday use, that will run for 60.000+ miles without any major fails? What engine would you recommend for this mission?

Sure, but landspeed racing is all about class records and turbine engines are another class. Someone ran an unofficial 500 mph wheel driven record with a turbine, but probably not a cheap way to go racing.

You should try to line hone a aluminum block with steel caps! What a pain!
@yarrdayarrdayarrda
@yarrdayarrdayarrda Жыл бұрын
Yeah it can be pretty brutal. In a perfect world you're miles ahead if you can line bore to within a thousand or two before the honing process. Line honing is a finicky task with a bunch of block rotations and cap hardware loosening to get all 5 (or 7 in this case) housings within spec at the same time.

Caps were installed backwards before the block was line honed. If the block was machined with the caps in the correct direction, then assembled with the caps in the opposite direction, the crank wouldn't have turned because the bores would have all been offset.
